Stevie Nicks vs. Madonna - Music of the Universe (Kevin's 9 Planets Under God Mix)

With Madonna's new CD in stores this week, this grudge match seemed appropriate.

In 2001, this there was a white-label pressing (vinyl & CD) of "Music of the Universe (Kevin's 9 Planets Under God Mix)" which merged Madonna's Music and illicit's vocal dub of Planets of the Universe. I had a physical copy for about one month until it was "taken by the sky" (i.e. sticky fingers.) I keep forgetting to ask DJ friends for it. However, you can listen to it at the link below.

Stevie/Madonna musical connection?

They both have written songs with Rick Nowels.

Madonna & Nowels co-wrote Power of Goodbye, To Have and To Hold & Little Star from Ray of Light, plus the unreleased tracks Like a Flower, Revenge and Gone, Gone, Gone (I have them if anyone cares).

Of course Stevie & Nowels co-wrote Rooms on Fire, I Can't Wait, I Miss You, Everybody Finds Out and probably some unreleased stuff as well. Does anyone know?

Three of Madonna's collaborations with Rick Nowels were included on her Grammy-winning Ray of Light album, but three tracks below did not make the cut. They are very high-quality, polished tracks.

Nowels has recycled a few of his instrumental tracks. One track that Madonna wrote lyrics for - but ended up on the cutting room floor - Nowels gave to Kylie Minogue. New lyrics were written and it was recorded, but it too failed to make the cut. I wonder what instrumentals of his have passed through Stevie's hands at some point but were passed on and became hits for other artists. Nowels has many hits to his credit. He even co-wrote Dido's White Flag, which I love.

I remember hearing about a Nowels/Madonna composition entitled "Alone Again" being recorded by Kylie Minogue in 2002. It was to have been released as a double A-side with "Come Into My World" but never materialised. Does anyone have the recording of this?
Also, are there any more unreleased Madonna tracks from the "Ray Of Light" sessions? The quality of the above three posted is astonishing.

You are correct about that track - Nowels & Madonna gave it Kylie. She did record it but it has yet to surface. I have one friend who is a Kylie fanatic, so I just emailed him to see if he has it.

I am thinking I should create a new thread in Chit Chat devoted to music created by frequent Stevie collaborators (in terms of writing, producing). Who other than Rick Nowels, Mike Campbell, and Sandy Stewart does she really have any writing history with? I think the thread might be of interest simply because any instrumental from those three could have (or did) end up in Stevie's hands at some point.

Remember when Stevie dissed Madonna back in the 80s? Sorry i don't have the quotes handy can someone post them?

It is interesting to see the way the two of them use their sexuality these days. Stevie does it so much better and is age appropriate where as Madonna is starting to look desperate and like a caricature. She should be looking to her slightly older colleague for inspiration on how to behave for the duration of ones career.

Thanks for posting "Alone Again" GoldDustOrphan - it's very much appreciated. I don't know how you got your hands on this recording but I'm very glad you did. This track is a lot mellower than I thought it would be and I can see why Kylie didn't issue it at the time, but it's definitely worth having. Thanks again!
