So far, I've been able to collect 7 acapellas (or scaled down tracks) from The Other Side of the Mirror. I thought I'd share what I have. Acapellas are the most important ingredient for remixing. Most remixer/producer/DJs rebuild a track almost entirely from acapellas. Warner is reluctant to release Stevie's acapellas to even established remixers, but they never counted on the fan component. We've been able to unearth/trade/share tracks unavailable to the professionals.

Some of these tracks reveal elements of her vocals not audible in the album mixes.

Hello Gold Dust--- Please forgive my ignorance, but I have a question. Is "I Still Miss Someone" a cover of the old country classic song? Or a Stevie original? Just curious. Best always, Madelow.:wavey:

Its a cover, and its terrible.

He nailed it.
I Still Miss Someone is a cover of the old Johnny Cash song, which has also been recorded by Dolly Parton, Martina McBride, Loretta Lynn, Nanci Griffith, Crystal Gayle, Joan Baez and Linda Rondstat.
I agree with Liam about Stevie's version. A complete misfire. Rupert Hine and his Fisher Price My First Keyboard did more sonic damage to Stevie's musical palette than cocaine and Klonopin.

I enjoy I Miss Someone but you can take Somebody Stand by Me as a shared opinion of what YOU think of I Miss Someone.

I have a soft spot for I Still Miss Someone. I guess the lyrics, as sung by Stevie, get to me.

I think Stevie's vocals on "I Still Miss Someone" are sublime -- some of her best on the album, in fact -- but that's definitely one glaring instance where Rupert Hine's production was ill-suited for both Stevie and the song.

Would be awesome if there were an acapella available for "Someone," because that song is begging for someone to give it a new life.

No, I actually agree. I think they were definitely "sweetened" for the album.

I can't wait to get home and out from my office firewall and listen to these. OSOTM to me is almost 'so bad it's bad' (as opposed to 'so bad it's good', like 'The Valley of The Dolls').

Just the thought of acapella OSOTM tracks make me wince. But like any trainwreck, I must have a peek..

That would have made a much better cover for that album. The pouting rouge face with that red dress and that hands and knees pose? Shideous.

But don't her shoes look pretty in the next pic?

Home now. Well, I made it through about 3 minutes each of 'Fire Burning', 'Long Way To Go' and 'Rooms On Fire'. Amazed, am I, that someone could change so drastically in 3 years (from '86 to '89). The nasal, phlegmy, wet-sounding noise from her nasal cavity was already creeping in her vocals, sadly. Very evident on the tracks that I could bear to listen to. I feel like perhaps Stevie and the girls didn't have much fun recording this. Call it a hunch. But, I guess in retrospect of the 10 minutes of my life that I can now never get back, I'd say it was very important that we all heard these. So thanks for posting them, lessons learned all around:

i have NEVER NEVER EVER EVER. Been able to stand fire burning. I like a few lyric lines from it, but HATE it. So The only one i listened to was Ooh my love cause its one of my favorite songs of hers, and it still sounded nice. The harmonys were especially good hearing them like that with no music. I STILL think this could sound really nice remixed. as long as its not the 17 minutes of mmmmtttttmmmmmttttmmmttttmmmmmmmmmmmtttttt drum and symbol and base thing before. I like remixes, but sometimes they take WAAAAyyy to long for a song to start.

These tracks are from the Safety reels, so they are unprocessed. The magic Auto-Tune wand was not yet employed.

Still, I don't think the vocals are bad at all. Compared to the purity and power of earlier vocals, yes, her abilities are diminished, but still compelling in my book.

Listen to the tracks all the way through. There are some throwaway/unused vocal bits here and there.

I really do think Ooh My Love needs to be reinvented. Eartha Kitt needs to cover Whole Lotta Trouble. I still love Juliet.

I will post some more acapellas just for fun. How about Think About It, Julia and Blue Denim? I will upload those later tonight.

(p.s. I'm fairly certain that I found that OSOTM out-take in SortaSavageLike's amazing on-line photo archive. His collection is one of the Ledge's greatest resources and the best defense against HWW's photographic paralysis. I did color adjust the photo and retouched the background with the intent to create a CD sleeve for OSOTM acapellas, but my crazy Brazilian boyfriend - who has grown increasingly agitated with my newfound preoccupation with The Ledge (joined in Jan.) - demanded I turn the computer off. When Brazilians get really mad, they go right for the face, so I'll get back the cover when he's absorbed in one of those stupid soccer matches.)

So thanks for posting them, lessons learned all around:I've always sorta liked these vocal mixes. I used to like playing one right after the other & I could veg out fairly comfortably. I find the instruments on Stevie Nicks solo albums actually distracting, so pushing those tracks to the background is just what the doctor ordered.

I'm twice as found of the "Street Angel" vocal mixes, like BLUE DENIM, GRETA, ROSE GARDEN.

True, but in my house soccer/football manifests as a whole lot of screaming in Portuguese, over-turned fruitcarts, hair-raising car-chases...okay, I'm exaggerating, but he overstates his dislike of Stevie just to provoke me.

Anyway, back to our scheduled program:

Are you gunna remix the OSOTM acapellas?

GoldDustOrphan

I'm not skilled enough to actually produce a good remix, but it's very possible that new remixes of Rooms on Fire and Whole Lotta Trouble could happen. Two talented DJ/Remixers friends of mine now have the acapellas and are working on ideas. They could come up empty or actually employ the acapellas. Acapellas - especially of this quality - are not easy to come by, so DJs consider them to be gold.

I did just post a few more remixes in the Stevie Nicks Remix Project thread.

Listening to these has been really interesting. TOSOTM was my favorite Stevie album for a long time, but I was surprised by these. There's a lot of darkness in the vocal arrangements that doesn't come through on the finished album aside from maybe the chorus of "Whole Lotta Trouble." pete said it sounds like the girls didn't have much fun recording these, and that's the quality 'm referring to. I just have a different impression.

I haven't listened to them all yet, but the chorus of "Rooms On Fire" really freaked me out the first time. Very eerie.

Here is some of what I have. Some are vocals from unreleased songs, others are very familiar. Scaled Down = acapella.
