I think with LB on acoustic and CM playing a grand piano -- the song would soar - - much like BC did on the SYW tour.

I think Mirror, Mirror would be really interesting live, but the chances of that happening are probably zero. So, are we including demos? Forest Of The Black Roses and Three Birds Of Rhiannon would also be really nice, but I'm not sure how good those would be live, especially with her current voice.

so i was watching the gypsy clips above and started checking out the other videos by the users etc . . . i came accross the "gold dust woman" from a bob welch show where christine and mick and stevie join bob. It's a pretty cool version cos it's a unique group playing it - but the real thing that struck me was at the very end, stevie says "they never let me do gold dust woman".

which is funny to me for two reasons:
1. It's such a warhorse it's hard to imagine there was a time when it wasn't in the set?

2. I also think that bringing up band issues (such as what "they" let her sing) while she is a guest on someone else's stage is an interesting piece of tact on her part. The fact that some of those "They"s she refers to, are also guests and happen to have just played a killer version of her song, leaves me scratching my head more.

It's a pretty cool version cos it's a unique group playing it - but the real thing that struck me was at the very end, stevie said "they never let me do gold dust woman"My very favorite version of the song!!! That mix of people performed it awesomely together. She definitely says, "They never let me do Gold Dust Woman that long". The ending is cut off in that video, so you can't hear her full sentence. I've been dying for an audio of that. It's on Bob Welch's album called Live At The Roxy (or something like that), but I can't find anywhere that has individual song downloads, and I don't want the whole album.

which is funny to me for two reasons:
1. It's such a warhorse it's hard to imagine there was a time when it wasn't in the set? :laughIt doesn't seem like FM performed it very often, for some reason...at least not as often as other songs, but I could be wrong. Early on, she seemed to have performed it a lot in her solo acts.

2. I also think that bringing up band issues (such as what "they" let her sing) while she is a guest on someone else's stage is an interesting piece of tact on her part. The fact that some of those "They"s she refers to, are also guests and happen to have just played a killer version of her song, leaves me scratching my head more.Do you mean good tact or bad tact? If it's the latter, she sometimes came off with odd comments on stage in those days. Being heavily on coke probably didn't make tact one of her strong qualities. In that performance, she seemed excited that she was given the time to get fully into the song, and blurted that statement out in her excitement. I don't think she meant any harm by it...at least not that time ;)

Nightbird's never been done at a concert, just twice for TV performances.I suspected that. And she does it so beautifully live too. The only reason I can figure why she would not have put it into her concert sets is because it is about her best friend's death, and maybe she didn't want the emotional burden of performing it regularly.

She left the stage before the song even finished. I've always thought that entire concert was fairly bad. She was stumbling around, acting disoriented....a wreck. I know she was experiencing lots problems at that time, so from that perspective, it's almost like a personal glimpse into her psyche, watching her struggle with her turmoil while performing, but the songs were not the best. However, she managed to pull off a very haunting and emotional Beauty And The Beast. I've always wondered which concert this was. Does anyone know? Was it part of the Wild Heart tour? It was professionally filmed, so there should be a good audio of it somewhere.

For the life of me, I will NEVER get why she cuts lines from her songs. She did it for Fall From Grace, Gypsy, Sara, SOTM, etc. I think it is the guys doing it. I say this because she has consistently referred to this being the case. And - some idiot cut the extra and beautiful:

You smile

And she was also smiling, laughing, playing with stuffed animals, singing ad-libs, dancing around, and being playful with the girls. Why would her leaving the stage a little early during a song cause you to dislike a performance? Those shawls aren't gonna change themselves. ( ;) )

I know she was experiencing lots problems at that time, so from that perspective, it's almost like a personal glimpse into her psyche, watching her struggle with her turmoil while performing, but the songs were not the best. I agree - BATB was haunting and emotional. There wasn't a dry eye in the house. It was also the song before Gypsy. You can't see the crowd in the video, but trust me - after the mid-set BATB buzzkill - everyone in the place is up, dancing, and hugging their friends.

I've always wondered which concert this was. Does anyone know? Was it part of the Wild Heart tour? It was professionally filmed, so there should be a good audio of it somewhere.

I agree. And it's such a shame that people are so focused on Stevie that they forget to notice that the people onstage are actually having a good time despite all the troubles everyone is watching to see manifest themselves.

Sharon and Lori are in-tune and not too loud, Waddy is happily chugging the band along, Benmont's fabulous light touch on the countermelody (?) is keeping the whole thing in the air, and ROY F*ING BITTAN is pounding his fingers to bloody splintered nubs playing Lindsey's ending guitar part on the piano. That last thing alone was worth the price of admission. Which, by the way, was $13. :D

Oh, and I realized I never answered this thread's question. My dream:

Show opener: Crying in the Night
Show closer: Nothing Ever Changes

And she was also smiling, laughing, playing with stuffed animals, singing ad-libs, dancing around, and being playful with the girls. Why would her leaving the stage a little early during a song cause you to dislike a performance? Those shawls aren't gonna change themselves. ( ;) )Leaving the stage was not why I didn't like it. I didn't say that. I just mentioned it. I'm sure it's not the first time she has left the stage early. Yes, I've also seen all the playfulness you mentioned. I liked the concert because I thought it was interesting, but I did not think it was the best she has ever done some of the songs, not that that matters. She doesn't have to do things perfectly for me to like her. In fact, I don't even expect that, but I don't always like every song, every time. I loved Beauty And The Beast.

Did you notice that after she sings the bridge to Gypsy she has to wipe a tear away? I think she started to think about Robin and her death. She started changing some words around too at the end. Great performance, IMO.

My favorite part is when Christine counts everybody down to where the song "starts over." I don't know what that's called in song structure, but that's what I'm calling it.

I remember you saying that you hated the Wild Heart arrangement of the song?

Ehh, it has definitely grown on me. I like the guitar licks Waddy adds to the song. Vocal wise, Mirage is my favorite, but I hate the arrangement of it on the Mirage vid. Gypsy is my favorite Stevie song, it just doesn't translate well live IMO.

Visions of LB ripping the radio out of his dashboard and tossing it with spite over some cliff on the highway

Actually, she says "They never let me play GDW this long, it's so much fun. Thank you all." I think she was being playful, didn't have any snarky intentions.

My very favorite version of the song!!! That mix of people performed it awesomely together. She definitely says, "They never let me do Gold Dust Woman that long". The ending is cut off in that video, so you can't hear her full sentence.

thanks you guys, and I agree that it changes her statement from what I thought she was saying. I still think my question of her tact still stands though. :)
I think phrasing it the way she did, "They never let me . . ." gives this image of her being controlled by the rest of the band. Or that she has suggested that they play GDW for a longer time and was told "NO". She could have said, "we never play it that long in fleetwood mac, that was fun" or something without the dig.

I've been dying for an audio of that. It's on Bob Welch's album called Live At The Roxy
this is where they call stevie "Madame X" right?

Do you mean good tact or bad tact? If it's the latter, she sometimes came off with odd comments on stage in those days. Being heavily on coke probably didn't make tact one of her strong qualities. In that performance, she seemed excited that she was given the time to get fully into the song, and blurted that statement out in her excitement. I don't think she meant any harm by it...at least not that time ;)

maybe instead of tact I would say that she had a lapse in taste.

Yes she was excited and full of blow so I will cut her some slack. But it seems that this was how she rolled with her public statements. I can't think of another good example right off though (no, i am not full of blow:wavey::]) Actually Michele gave us an example from the say you will tour.

The way she introduced Beautiful Child during the SYW tour made me think that she must have wanted to sing it in the past and "they" wouldn't let her. She introduced it like someone finally gave her permission.

Michele

right - she could have said "i wanted to do this song for many years, but the time just wasn't right. Now it is." or in someway that doesn't seem to be poking at the same people she is on stage with. lol

but then again, maybe she is just playing up the "conflict" in the band because it's what people expect at a fleetwood mac show.

She could have said, "we never play it that long in fleetwood mac, that was fun" or something without the dig.It was just one of those goofy Stevie comments. It had no bearing on the past; Fleetwood Mac hadn't even played GDW on its most recent tour. It hadn't played GDW since 1978, & when it did so then, the song was loooooooong -- in fact, longer on average than it was with Welch & Friends. Besides, what does length have to do with anything, Stevie? Size doesn't matter. You sang more scat in 1978 than you did in 1981 with Welch & Friends.

this is where they call stevie "Madame X" right?Yes, Stevie was billed that way in the L.A. Times in the ad for the concert. Not many people knew she'd be a guest at the gig. The Roxy is a small club & can't squeeze in even a tenth of Stevie's audience in those days.

I was talking about the video of Gypsy posted earlier in this thread. It was a version from her Wild Heart tour. I was explaining to Liam that this version has grown on me. I was referring to the Mirage video as a version that was good vocal wise, but not innstrumentally.
