I posted this on the Rumors board but haven't heard any response yet. In Mick's book he talks about the first version of Gold Dust Woman having been eaten by the tape machine and how they needed to rerecord it. Are there any known boots of the original version?

My guess is that the "original" original is bye-bye, and she literally re-recorded it, and that was that. I mean, cause what did they use for the Rumours remaster & stuff? I would think that that's all they had...but oh, if there were a copy of that one that got eaten. I mean for as normality as Stevie is nowadays, she'd ad-lib more back when, so was that original GDW different? Was there enough time in between where she thought "ya know, I don't like this once octive" or something. So an original original version of GDW...does it exist?

I think the closest thing would be the acoustic version that's on the Rumours reissue. It might even pre date the eaten studio take.

I had a bootleg on cassette years ago that sounded a lot like the rumors version but the ending was a lot longer and grew in intensity. The quality wasn't great but it was a wild recording. I also remember having an instrumental too. I always wondered if those were from that session.

I don't have a clear idea of that story. Yes, he said that. He also said the machine was called JAWS for obvious reasons, so they had to record again most of the songs, after loosing almost every session from Sausalito except the drums recordings. And the rerecord was at LA.

But he also said about the several takes of GDW, and finally Stevie got a great performance very late, actually at a cold dawn, he mentions the chill and the mist, or so I recall. Then it seems that was the recording we got at the album. But I remember that was in Sausalito. So that tape wasn't lost??

And.. if everything was lost.. how did they get all those songs for the Rumours special edition they released in 2004? Some songs has different sounds and styles, I don't think they were trying several rhythms again in LA, I guess they already knew by that time what was the final cut so they rerecord just that sound. But we got 2 alternate versions of GDW in CD2. I don't get it..
