View Full Version : Round wooden tambourine versus plastic half-moon?

So, it seems like the round wooden tambs were permenantly shelved after the 'Wild Heart' tour, right? Because any tour thereafter we see the plastic half-moon, and videos too (like 'I Can't Wait').
I sort of like the wooden ones, myself. Seems more like a real instrument and less of a toy-like prop. So, questions to any percussion enthusiasts: why did she make the cut-over from wood to acrylic? I'm pretty sure I've heard enough wooden ones in my day, even as an amateur, to be able to say that the wooden old-fashioned kind has a sweet, jingly sound. The plastic ones have a more harsh sound, no? If you watch the occasionally hilarious 'SNL' clip of Lucy Lawless doing Stevie, you can hear how rattley and hollow the plastic tambo sounds.
Another thing is that the advent of the plastic half-moon tambourine also heralded the beginning of the ribbons-on-the-mic stand period too, which of course has lasted until today. With matching ribbons on the tambourine. The exception to this was the RAL tour, which did feature the plastic tambourine but still featured the mic stand floral display, sans ribbon.
I want to make a connection between Klonopin and plastic tambourines and mic stand ribbons, but I'm having a real hard time...it's such a mystery.

i'm not even CLOSE to being an expert on this, but i'll give my 2 cents.
i bought a half moon tambo about a month ago and it had info on the container that said the sound of the tambo comes from what the "jingles" are made out of  brass are more lower-pitched and darker sounding, while stainless steel jingles are brighter and louder  (according to guitar center). plus, mine is plastic, but it sounds nothing like the lucy lawless version on snl ;)
i always assumed stevie went to half moon because of her mystique and appearance. But it also says the half moons are more ergonomically correct. so idk. maybe stevie needed to save her wrist strength to track those ghosts through the fog

A little while ago, as I was scrubbing the grout in my bathtub (and who doesn't think deep thoughts while doing this?) it occurred to me that quite possibly Stevie's hip and leg arthritis is actually systemic, and she has touches of arthritis all over and maybe the half-moon tamb is easier on the wrist. It seems that great minds think alike!

The half-moon ones usually have a nice, cushioned area to grab onto. The round, wood ones are awkward and the hard edges dig into your fingers and it becomes painful very quickly. The half-moon ones give you more flexibility how you play 'em too. You can grasp tightly and bash away - or you can hold it loosely at your side with just your thumb and one finger. The slightest tap will still make a big noise.

^ right. plus with the crescent moon ones, you're holding on closer to the tamb's center of gravity, which makes it less unwieldy.

Of course, though the round wooden ones look more graceful and musical. But, with Stevie now, it's all about her comfort.
What ever happened to cowbells with drumsticks? That was cool..

I think the round wooden ones look awful. They never matched her outfit and they look like they barely made any noise. Love the new tambos.

Round wooden tambourines to me seem more like proper instruments, I like to see our girl with the time-honored percussion tools rather than the modern- even if the natural wood tone clashes with her BLACK skirt, BLACK bustier, BLACK blouse, BLACK reeblechs or boots, and BLACK shawl.
Anyway, Lindsey's geetar doesn't always match his outfit, and most people see past that fashion faux-pas..

I agree with you partly. . esthetically only, i prefer the round one to the crescent moon one on stevie. even though I just bought the crescent moon  but I like the black round ones.

Round is good, black even better, and if it were wood, well all would be well in the world.

The drumstick and cowbell - I always say, "Look, Stevie's making scrambled eggs," during Tusk in the Mirage video.
I like when she'd "wear" the giant round tambo by throwing it on her shoulder to sing - and then do that march across the stage with it during "Golden Braid."

I hate that crescent tambourine for Stevie Nicks because it reminds me of "mature" Stevie. Plus, I hate all that shit she festoons it with. Terrible things might happen. Stevie does a lot of corporate shows these days. What if she does a private gig at a sausage factory, & she stands too close to the sausage grinder & one of those damn ribbons gets caught in the grinder? Bye-bye ribbon, then bye-bye crescent tambourine, then bye-bye Stevie.
On the other hand, I dig her old wood tambourines of varying sizes. They were classic-looking, redolent of Old Romany in Universal pictures directed by James Whale.

Totally! She's supposed to be a gypsy!

But Stevie could always let go of the tambo, before she was sucked in.

I love both tamourines equally, but if I had to choose I'd choose the wooden tambourine a la Gold & Braid...
