No, but what difference does that make? It doesn't sound like a somber event - more like a celebration of his life.

Former LED ZEPPELIN Members, ERIC CLAPTON And Others To Attend Private Memorial For Late Atlantic Records Founder Ahmet Ertegun Today

According to Reuters, some of the biggest names in rock music, including MICK JAGGER, ERIC CLAPTON, PHIL COLLINS and the surviving members of LED ZEPPELIN, will attend a private memorial in New York today (April 17th) for their late boss, Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun.

Clapton, Collins and STEVIE NICKS are among the scheduled performers, an Atlantic spokeswoman said. The event, organized by Ertegun's widow Mica, will take place at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Jagger is one of the speakers. Bette Midler will host.

Ertegun died last December aged 83, after suffering a brain injury when he fell backstage at a Rolling Stones show in October. The Turkish immigrant co-founded Atlantic in 1947, and brought the blues, jazz and R&B of his adopted country to the masses. The label's rock roster was equally impressive.

Other scheduled performers will include CROSBY, STILLS, NASH & YOUNG, SOLOMON BURKE, KID ROCK and SAM MOORE, BEN E. KING, WYNTON MARSALIS, MANHATTAN TRANSFER, and DR. JOHN (with Clapton).

Star-studded rock farewell to Atlantic boss

Dan Glaister in Los Angeles
Wednesday April 18, 2007

Guardian

It was a line-up worthy of a rock legend. Mick Jagger was to give a speech, Eric Clapton, Stevie Nicks and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young were billed to perform, and Bette Middler was the host.
The guest list for last night's memorial for Ahmet Ertegun, the founder of Atlantic Records, who died in December aged 83, included the surviving members of Led Zeppelin and artists as diverse as Kid Rock, Wynton Marsalis and Manhattan Transfer.

And in true rock style, a frisson of transgression was expected: Ertegun's widow, Mica, was reported to have invited three of his mistresses.

Ertegun, who nurtured the careers of many of rock's biggest names, died from brain injuries after a fall backstage at a Rolling Stones concert in October.

Inspired by seeing a concert by jazz singer Cab Calloway, the Turkish immigrant launched Atlantic Records in 1947 with the help of a $10,000 loan from the family dentist. The label recorded early success with R&B artists such as Big Joe Turner and Ruth Brown, before crossing into a wider market in the late 1950s with artists such as Ray Charles and crooner Bobby Darin.

In the 1960s Ertegun and Atlantic offered a US home to British acts including the Stones, Led Zeppelin and Dusty Springfield. US acts included the Allman Brothers, Buffalo Springfield, Stevie Nicks and Roberta Flack.

Although Atlantic was swamped by the corporate mergers that defined the recording industry from the late 1960s, Ertegun retained his influence and his independence.

Jagger, Clapton, Midler & More Honor Atlantic's Ertegun

by Natalie Finn

Led Zeppelin didn't reunite, but plenty of Ahmet Ertegun's other disciples were more than happy to take the stage together.

Rock icons such as Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton, Stevie Nicks, and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young gathered at New York's Lincoln Center Tuesday to pay tribute to the Atlantic Records chairman, who died Dec. 14 at 83.

Tragically, yet oddly fittingly, Ertegun died of a head injury suffered in October when he fell down at a Rolling Stones concert. A mover and a shaker until the end, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer signed and nurtured rockers such as the Stones and Led Zeppelin, as well as some of the biggest names in soul and R&B, including Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin and Otis Redding.

Jagger remembered his boss at Atlantic as "the wicked uncle with the wicked chuckle," saying he could never keep up with the dapper Turk.

The event's host, Bette Midler, said that Ertegun could "charm the birds out of the trees," and reminisced how she had grown up on Atlantic music, tunes that "promised there was a party somewhere."

As one would expect, "Ahmet Ertegun: A Celebration" was largely a musical affair.

Performers included Clapton, who led a band featuring New Orleans pianist Dr. John through Percy Mayfield's "Please Send Me Someone to Love" and Stick McGhee's "Drinkin' Wine Spo-dee-o-dee"; Phil Collins, who sang "In the Air Tonight" and then, joined by the rest of Genesis, "Follow You, Follow Me"; Ben E. King, who crooned "Don't Play That Song," which Ertegun helped write; Crosby, Stills & Nash, who took on the Beatles' "In My Life" before Neil Young joined them for "Helplessly Hoping"; Young, who coupled with Stephen Stills on "Mr. Soul"; Stevie Nicks, who sang a double feature of "Stand Back" and Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll"; Solomon Burke; and, adding a contemporary vibe, Kid Rock.

Rock, who also attended Ertegun's funeral in his native Istanbul, took on the Wilson Pickett classic "In the Midnight Hour" and Sam and Dave's "I Thank You," with the help of Sam Moore.

"I hope that today's musicians have someone like Ahmet," Young said.

Other notables on hand to celebrate Ertegun's legacy and pay their respect's to the late impresario's wife, Mica, included New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, designer Oscar de la Renta, Ray director Taylor Hackford, David Geffen, Henry Kissinger and Rolling Stone publisher Jann Wenner.

I would've LOVED to hear CSN's version of "In My Life."

When I think of Robert Plant, I think of his last show in support of the "Now and Zen" album.

He played my hometown Muskogee, OK - the first rock concert since Head East years earlier (Muskogee banned rock concerts at the Civic Center). As soon as Mr.Plant's set was finished, with liquor bottle in hand, he left the stage and jumped into a limo and was gone within seconds.

Funny, his opening act in Muskogee was Faith No More who did a rockin' version of "Okie From Muskogee"....Of course the audience laughed at that song's first verse about smoking some wacky-weed.

I love how Stevie's smiling in all of these pictures. That little girl who told her to smile in pictures really had a big impact. We should plant another cute little girl in Stevie's presence and get her to say that she should mix up her set lists more. We'd be hearing Sisters of the Moon and Sable on Blond in no time! :woohoo:

Farewell Ahmet

You already know about record tycoon Ahmet Ertegun's farewell celebration last week in the Rose Theater of Columbus Circle in New York. About 700 people crammed in for the farewell to the Turkish/American phenomenon who created Atlantic Records. Ahmet was given a farewell that, had they charged for it, would have been the blockbuster hit of all time -- almost three hours of the famous from Phil Collins to Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Eric Clapton, Dr. John, Solomon Burke, Sam Moore, Kid Rock, Stevie Nicks, Ben E. King and my favorites -- the Manhattan Transfer. Not to omit a touching appearance by Bette Midler, as a kind of classy emcee, doing "Princess Papoolee Has Plenty of Papaya; She Likes to Give It Away!" Bette appeared throughout giving a warm, witty and sweet touch to the proceedings.
Oh yes, and Mick Jagger, the piece de resistance at the end. He was cute. Most of the speeches were good, heartfelt, some a trifle dirty and funny. Oscar de la Renta did well, so did a clearly emotional Jann Wenner and best of all -- surprise, direct from L.A., the record mogul David Geffen himself. Who knew he was such a dynamic speaker?

I wondered whether people were aware that the handsome bearded man who rose to speak briefly was Oscar-winning movie director Taylor Hackford, who had organized the show for Mica Ertegun, Ahmet's elegant widow?

So who was the fabulous-looking blonde in white sitting next to director Hackford in the third row? Hmmm -- does his wife Helen Mirren know Taylor was out with such a winner? (Oh, it was Helen! But, of course.)

Party on

At the after-party in the Boathouse of Central Park, Madonna's PR lady, Liz Rosenberg, (she is almost as famous as Madonna) came up to introduce Stevie Nicks. The blond and adorable Stevie said she felt she had to tell a few tales about Ahmet as well as sing, and this made the evening go a bit long. Everybody wanted to pay tribute. Me, too -- Ahmet was one of my favorite people.
