View Full Version : Destiny Rules DVD
Just watched this (nothing on the tele!) after such a long time!
What is so evident about this for me is that Stevie is such an amazing vocalist -she just sits and sings and absolutely blew me away (The Tower/Lindsey's songs - why didn't he use those vocals on the finished versions????)
And why doesn't Stevie just get into the studio and sing some great songs - if she is not happy singing her own songs she should just look into the vault of wonderful current songwriters - Patty Griffin/Shawn Colvin/Karen Peris/Judie Tzuke)
All i know is i need to hear that voice singing some new songs!!

I agree. I'm just in love with Stevie's voice. her inflection, her tone, her vibrato. just the sound of her voice, especially in it's soft state, takes me away.

Patty Griffin is amazing, I'd love to see a collaboration with stevie. She once mention stevie as a major influence in some mag. Plus, they already have something in common; the dixie chicks covered their songs and f$*#ed um up:]

correction: the dixie chicks covered landslide and brought stevie's music to a new generation and raked in the bucks for stevie.
and i like the dixie chicks' take on patty's songs.

I don't think there's anything on there she did on his songs that's not on the album. They're just mixed in quieter than his vocals, which, however disappointing it may be, is to be expected.

Yet, in the final product hardly reflected this. When she sang "if that's all there is" at the end of SYHA, it is barely heard on the record. In fact, her voice can sound like a tin can on the record. I remember thinking "what did they do to it because she sounded so natural and good on the doc." Ditto for much of TISL. So, Stevie, if you are readind :D -- some good advice is stay away from the computer manipulated voice and just sing it, it tends to sound better, at least to this fan :D

I was actually speaking in general terms...not specifically towards any recording in particular.
but, I do agree.

I wonder if she just releases contriol once she sings it and they bring the final product to her for mixing, which she apparently takes an interest in. I mean if I can hear the difference, surely she can
Note to the weak at heart - I adore la Nicks. I am just commenting on the IMO lacking production standard of her vocals in the final product.

And no doubt Stevie was laughing all the way back to the bank.

It was funny, in an interview she was talking about the Dixie Chicks doing her song and says something like 'not only did it make me a fortune, but it also brought my music to another generation who might hear my songs and go out and buy my records'. Funny girl. Always thinking about that buck!!

well, the first part is pretty much a fact, but the second part, you're right, is my opinion.

I don't loathe their Landslide, but I don't love it either. Now their versions of Patty's tunes are superb, IMO. To be honest, I prefer their Top of the World over Patty's.

I don't disagree with you, just wanted to ask - am I the only one who sings this line from SYHA? :) And the higher, slightly behind tempo "steal your heeaaarrrrt awayyyys?" Just me?

Just like I sing a higher harmony on "I Am Waiting" from UTS, because I thought Stevie sounded great on that on the DR doc and I just can't sing it anyway else anymore.

I always sing it (as well as "If that's all there is" ) and make this face  about how they screwed with the quality of it.

Hooha sista! I sing it that way too! By the way, I love it when she is sitting on the couch in the DR doc singing Illume with Lindsey playing guitar just belting it out. Her voice is just so distinct, raspy and beautiful. You know Lindsey is just in awe of her when she is singing, silently loving her:xoxo: . Oops, I let my shipper self out of the bag.. :p

 I agree with everything you guys have been saying. She sounds great on the documentary and then you can barely hear her on some of the songs.

I thought it was interesting when, during DR, Stevie was describing the mix of one of her songs in that it was difficult for her to hear her song after the mix as she felt a disconnection from her original demo...or something along those lines.

Which of the SYW songs did Christine sing on? I keep forgetting. :o
