View Full Version : DCAHNM was to be Stevie's?

I read over on BuckinghamNicks that Don't Come Around Here No More was originally supposed to be on Rock A Little and, well, long story short, Stevie ended up just putting her backing vocals on it for Tom's album.
that's very interesting. but what I'm really interested in is if those are actually Stevie's vocals on Tom's version?

I allways thought that it seemed "Stevie like". Sometimes on the album, it does sound like her backing in parts, and then other times it sounds like someone else. one of my favorites from the tom tour w/ stevie on backround vocals it sounded really good. wonder if theres a version w/ alternate vocals?
Where are the Tom fans...

Yep - it's Stevie and Sharon on the background vocals.
The story: The song was intended to be for Stevie - and then when she found out that Dave Stewart and Tom had already been working on it without her - she got pissed-off and told Tom that he could just have it.
Stevie talked about this on one of those VH1 video countdown shows - I've got it on VHS somewhere -but I don't have the technology to upload it anywhere. Maybe it's on youtube already??

me too - it's the most "Stevie" Tom has have ever gotten.
It would have fit right in with the rest of Rock A Little.
But I'm glad things turned out the way they did.
It's a great Tom Petty song, and it really helped people to look at him in a way that they didn't before. He suddenly wasn't only about Breakdown or Refugee.

well I'll be damned. I've loved this song all this time and always thought the backing sounded like Stevie, but was never sure. then, when I saw her doing it with Tom last year, it popped in my mind again...and now, ok, it's now my fav Tom tune.
thanks Livia

There is a mix of it, which I do not have, where you can clearly hear La Nicks on the chorus. Maybe someone can post it.

I remember hearing that along time ago as well - that it was supposed to be for Stevie - and how pissed I was that she didin't do it. I imagined it would have been a great song for her about quitting drugs. The background singers to me sounded like Sharon and Lori but I never thought Stevie was in it as well. The woman screaming at the end is FABULOUS and my favorite part. I think Stevie should do this song live today. I swear it's getting to where I want Stevie to sing more covers than her own standards.

Dave Stewart wrote it for her and Petty, I think. For whatever reason, she didn't show up at the recording session but Sharon did. That's the official story anyway. Another huge opportunity missed by Stevie in her solo career. The video is awesome and she would have been fab in it.

I always thought that Stevie is singing background, but I thought there was a Q&A in which someone says that Stevie is not singing on it, which I still find hard to believe.

As has been said, the song was written for Stevie... plus Tom thought Dave Stewart would also be an ideal candidate to take over production on 'Rock A Little,' since Jimmy Iovine had quit. Apparently Stevie & Dave never really clicked though.
Anyway, there are two different versions of the story behind this song.
One goes that Stevie initially started working on the song, and had already laid down some vocals, but abandoned it when she came into the studio late one day and saw that Tom was singing lead as the band was rehearsing it.
Now, depending on who's telling that version, there are two different reactions: She was either pissed that they didn't wait for her and said, "fine -- then you just do the song"... or... she heard Tom singing it and felt it was better suited to him than her.
Either way, in this version of the story, it is said that there are some of Stevie's vocals still on the completed track.
The other story is somewhat similiar, but the difference is that Stevie never sang a note of the song -- coming in to find Tom rehearsing it with the band, and getting pissed that they didn't wait for her.
I can't remember where... I think a VH1 interview within the last 5 or 6 years... but I'm pretty certain that Stevie said her vocals ARE on the finished studio track.

I've listened to this song over and over all day and I swear I can't hear Stevie. if she's on it, she's buried somewhere. I can't even hear her on parts where Stevie is usually distinctively heard (like low, breathy parts).
the main female voice in this song always reminded me of Mrs. Loud of Meat Loaf fame.

Her arms are too fat for her to be a diva.
*relating to the rumor that she scrapped some video that was totally done because she thought her arms looked fat, and made a whole new video*
Which reminds me, I haven't seen the Stand Back video for weeks now. I better go look.
I had always heard the "she didn't sing on it at all, but was supposed to" theory regarding DeeCeeAyyAychEnnEmm (DCAHNM).

I heard in some interview years ago with TP that she was supposed to sing, and that Sharon and maybe Lori showed up instead.
I can't imagine Stevie in that era being late.
The bg vox are definitely in the Stevie mode.
For some reason I thought I heard that the song was about Stevie at one time, as she really used to pester Tom a lot when they lived in the same neighborhood. I remember him specifically saying, "She was kind of a pest!"

I don't think Stevie sang a note on it. I heard Tom Petty say in an interview
that Stevie's "back-up" singers happened to be in the studio the day it was recorded and he used them after a session they were booked in for was cancelled. He never mentioned Stevie being involved at all. He was like..they were there..so I used them. Don't forget..Sharon can sound hauntingly like Stevie when she wants to.

After reading this thread I went to iTunes and bought the original (I've always liked the song so why not) and listened really close. There is a voice in the chorus that sounds a little Stevie like but I can't imagine Stevie doing a vocal where she only sings the line and doesn't add at least one little oooh or aaah so that you can tell it's her.
Although I seem to recall that there was also a BB King album where Stevie was listed as singing backup on "Drowning In A Sea Of Love" (how appropriate) but when I listened you could barely hear her and she actually did pretty much sing one phrase over and over and that was it. So I could be proved wrong. LOL!

The BB King song that Stevie sang on is called "Can't Get Enough of Your Love." I don't have the technology to post an mp3, but maybe someone else can - Here's the lyrics:
B.B. King ft. Stevie Nicks
Can't Get Enough
I've been tossing and turning all night
Staring into the darkness, afraid to turn on the light
It's got nothing to do with money
I can sing, I want you honey
And I just can't rest until I get it right
Cause when the morning breeze starts blowing
That's when you'll hear me call your name
That's when my love starts showing
It's getting serious, baby...
End of game
Cause I can't get enough of your love
I said I can't get enough of your love
I can't get enough of your love
I said I can't get enough of your love
You got me walkin' round in circles
Yeah, I'm always pacing the floor
But this life I'm living without you
I just can't take no more
Well, the morning breeze starts blowin'
I can hear you call my name
That's when my love starts showin'
It's getting serious, baby...
End of game
Cause I can't get enough of your love
I said I can't get enough of your love
I can't get enough of your love
I said I can't get enough of your love
I...can't get enough of your love...
I...can't get enough of your love...
When the morning breeze starts blowing
I can hear it call your name
That's when my love starts showing
It's getting serious, baby...
End of game
Cause I can't get enough of your love
I said I can't get enough of your love

I don't understand why she passed on it really. She reuses phrases in her songs all the time. She made some remarkably bad career moves during that time, IMO. And who wouldn't want Bernie Taupin to write a song for them? Damn Klonopin.

When Giorgio Moroder approached Stevie about collaborating, the demo he presented her with was called "Man Machine." For one reason or another (she was probably spooked by that title!), she passed.
He then took it to Debbie Harry, and once she wrote the lyrics, it became "Call Me."
So, "Call Me" wasn't really offered to Stevie... but the demo that inspired it, was.

Ann & Nancy have said that Stevie passed on it because it was too similar to the songs that Stevie herself writes. The logic being, "why record someone else's song when it sounds just like something I can write myself?"
Ann & Nance were quite happy to take the song, though, because it was very different from what they write, and allowed them a chance to show another side of themselves.

I believe Sharon is credited on b'ground vocals in the album's liner notes. Sharon includes it in her own discography on the NicksFix (Singer's pages) too.
I don't believe Stevie is credited in the liner notes- although that doesn't necessarily mean she's not in the mix somewhere. That would be the MixFix. LOL!
Here she is live at Bonnaro just for fun though.

They used tons of that King Arthur crap on Little Queen and at other times (Dream of The Archer anyone?). After all, they did steal half their schtick from Zeppelin.
But it allowed them a lot of things. A number one single, and the peak of the well deserved second coming of their career. Also, it was a stellar opportunity for Nancy. Her first and only lead vocal on a single and on their biggest hit song to boot. Plus, that unforgettable moment in music video history of her gaff taped and pushed up within an inch of their life breasts damned near bursting forth from her top in those slow mo shots of her riding that horse. I still remember that image and I don't even like tits all that much. Epic.

God love 'em I think that's code. They'd never recorded a schlocky MOR single by an outside writer before. I think that was their justification. The other side of themselves they were showing was that they were whorin out for the man.
That quartet of records that made them so much money was a company engineered sellout of their creativity, and they wanted the cash. They became something of a high priced cover band whose only saving graces were Nancy's looks, their laurels and Ann's amazing voice. I adore them, and know people gotta pay the bills. But that answer was a tail between the legs copout. They've basically admitted as much since. Not in reference to the quote but to the compromise they made for commerce. That's the lens through which I interpret that quote.
