Ok, so I just saw this documentary movie about The Flaming Lips (the psychedelic/punk/pop band from OKC) last night on the Sundance channel.

Have to admit, I really wasn't familiar with their material, although I'd found myself perusing their CDs quite often (mainly because they're always right in front of Fleetwood Mac's CD bins in the stores).

Any fans here?

I like em, but I'm not a huge fan. I love 'Do You Realize??'.

i like the flaming lips, but i have to be in a certain mindset to pop a cd in. it doesn't happen that often, but still. i appreciate what they do.

I saw them live for the 1st time on New Years Eve - absolutely amazing show!
I didn't know that much about them but have been learning quickly - they have a great following!

Oh yeah, they're okay. *shuffles her feet, whistles and tries to hide all the Flaming Lips CDs she's bought over the years and the picture of Wayne Coyne on her wall*

Fearless Freaks is a great documentary! Even if I weren't a huge, huge fan I'd still put it forward as one of the best music documentaries out there. I love the bit where Wayne re-enacts the robbery at the restaurant where he used to work and the part where Steven Drozd shoots up is really harrowing. Thankfully he's all cleaned up and looking much healthier these days.

I'd advise everyone to go to one of their gigs as they put on one of the most unique and fun shows around. It's like a big circus/birthday party with balloons, streamers, lasers, people dressed up as aliens, superheroes and santas, oh and lots of cool music too - absolutely fantastic!

As for their albums The Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots are essential listening for any fan of interesting pop music, while Transmissions From The Satellite Heart and Clouds Taste Metallic are amazing psychedelic rock albums. I even love their earlier punk stuff and the weirdness that is Zaireeka.

Anyway, I'll stop gushing now :)

welcome to the club, Chili, Sharon and Mari and I were thinking that we were alone over here in the thread(s) we had last year about them. I'm not a huge fan but like their rawer stuff a whole lot!

Of course the Lips are great, they're from OKC!!!!

Gotta love Flaming Lips Alley in downtown OKC (Right down the street from the Ford Center where the Ledge's own shackin' up suffered Lindsey-envy back on July 1,2003) I am suprised noone has yet to steal that street sign.

I saw them three times last year - SXSW, at the ACL Fest and again at the Voodoo Fest in New Orleans. We were on the same airplane from New Orleans to Houston. While we were waiting to board, I showed Wayne the pics I'd taken of him in the hamster ball. :D

Chili, do a search on youtube for them. Their shows are stupendous. Their cover of "Bohemian Rhapsody" is the shit! Their latest album is really good, I'm not all that familiar w/ their earlier stuff.

A lot of FLips fans feel the new album, At War With The Mystics, is one of their weaker efforts. There are definitely a few stellar tracks on there (as well as a couple of stinkers) but overall I'd say it doesn't match their previous five or six albums.

I love their appearance on Beverly Hills 90210 in the early 90s the best:

OMG 90210. I remember watching that when it was on.

Is it weird that I've always preferred Grandaddy to Flaming Lips? I even hate "Do You Realize?" Although I do love The Soft Bulletin.
