View Full Version : Saddam sentenced to death

Are we surprised? Does anyone care? Does this really mean anything to us? The Iraqi people? How involved is the U.S. and/or U.N. in this trial?

I can't help but feel that this sentence is mostly to say "see, we told you, we are winning, we brought the bad man to justice & now he'll pay." Am I wrong?

it is supposed to give the US citizens the impression that Bush had a successful "mission accomplished" in regards to terrorists, Iraq & those pesky WMD's (I found a WMD this morning, Unfortunately the 'terror suspect' did not cover that WMD up in the litter box...Damned "Feline Extremists'!!!)

Does anyone care?

Yeah. We shouldn't be involved in this. He should be sentenced to prison for the rest of his life. But hanging? What does that say about democracy to the rest of the middle east?

Does this really mean anything to us?

Oh yes. It's one for the history books. And I don't think we'll come out of this one looking too good.

The Iraqi people?

Definitely. I'm sure many of them feel pretty strongly about this. At this point, they probably have mixed emotions about the whole deal.

How involved is the U.S. and/or U.N. in this trial?

It doesn't matter. What does matter is that we will always be perceived as responsible for this. And I don't think that's a good thing for us in the long run.

The guy that found him that day in the hole should have shot him that day-
Said-
Sorry, he tried to escape-, I had to use deadly force

Same result
Saddam is dead

Tons and Tons of money saved on trials and rherotic, and theroy's and people's misery wathing this man parade around on TV in a courtroom waiting for his verdict while thier family members were already dead, maybe after they were tortured...Justice? doesn't exist for these sad people, just revenge

The American sholdier should have just shot him and be done with it.
But...that is not what we do...we don't decide the law, or invoke it ,we just bring criminals into custody...maybe we should have made an exception and just shot the bastard----

what with his last words to Iraqis and his goodbyes to his family, you watch, he'll be played off as a martyr for the cause (political)........

The sectarian violence will only increase and that country will implode IMO.

Personally, I am not sure I agree with a death sentence, but of course they didnt pass the memo my way.......In a strange sort of way, I feel compassion for him at the end, knowing that he will soon have to face his earthly deeds...thats an awful lot of bad Karma to have to overcome..........

I disagree. I don't think it's sick and morbid enough! I mean, it's a simple hanging. They should cut out his tongue, chop off his hands, and chop off his little dictator. THEN hang him. Now, to top it off, they should have a pool to see what actually killed him: choking or bleeding. In short, they should do unto him just some of the awful things he did to others.

This doesn't make a bit of sense to me. How is it that Bush has kept peons from al-Qaeda and the Taliban locked up in Gitmo since 2001, and continues to keep them there (and possibly continues to torture them) because he claims they *may* still have valuable information, yet we're letting the Iraqis kill Hussein when we *know* he has valuable information?

For instance, was Saddam waterboarded to finally confess that he did in fact have connections with al-Qaeda and was involved in 9-11 (as Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld have claimed ad nausem since before the Iraq war began)? Doesn't Saddam have valuable and juicy info on his neighbors, specifically IRAN? I could go on and on and on...

Never mind the fact that his sentencing hearing was fake, and was timed to occur two days before our midterm elections. This whole thing leaves me with a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach.

Reuters, December 29th, 2006 18:35 GMT:
The White House declined to comment on the timing.
"That is a matter for the Iraqi people, we are observers to that process. They are a sovereign government and they will make their own decisions regarding carrying out justice," spokesman Scott Stanzel said in Crawford, Texas.

AP, December 29th, 2006 10:02 PM Eastern
An adviser to Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said Saddam would be executed before 6 a.m. Saturday, or 10 p.m. Friday EST. Saddam and others were convicted of murder in the killings of 148 Shiite Muslims from an Iraqi town where assassins tried to kill Saddam in 1982.
...
The time was agreed upon during a meeting Friday between U.S. and Iraqi officials, said the adviser, who declined to be quoted by name because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

that's funny. I just heard a statement from Bush going on about how he got a fair trial but his victims didn't. it's a point but not one that bush should be making considering the government has tortured people in guantanamo bay and has held them without charge for years and without access to lawyers.
for once I agree with you. Gad.

Anytime. We may joke around but this board contains a very intelligent, politically aware group of people. For you to insinuate that we don't know what we are talking about is insulting and I hope you realize that.
can I get an AMEN!!!!!

I think the only thing that's unjust about this is that we can't kill him again.

I would like to publicly APOLOGIZE to anyone who may have been offended by anything I said/wrote.
I think the world of coming to these boards and chatting with y'all.
I was not speaking of anyone one in general... it's just that there is already so much low energy (ie, hate and dissention) in the world and I suppose I let me ego do the typing. When I said "everyone" I meant everyone everywhere... not just you guys. SORRY for any misunderstanding.
And I better end on that note.
Again... I apologize and welcome any personal notes in response. Thanks!
Your apology was sweet and I must say, in the main, I find myself agreeing with you a lot.....but for some reason, I dont find myself celebrating this mans death. Somehow, I get the feeling he was actually a sacrificial lamb, and even tho his regime committed atrocities, there was more stability under his rule than there is with our help
