View Full Version : How will we feel 20 years from now?

Does anyone know where the sample in "I Can't Wait" is from? I really don't think the voice saying "How will we feel 20 years from now?" is Stevie. Is it from a movie or is it just one of the girls? I've always wondered that. In fact, the whole line is "How will we feel 20 years from now, looking back" You can hear it in the remix the last time it's played.

I always thought it was Sharon's voice.

I think it's Stevie. They alter it a little at first and then a lot more as they repeat it. I think that's such a great part of the song...it's like she's obsessed, demanding and impatient then in the back of her head thinking "be careful of what you ask for, for you may surely get it."

She does not say "How will we feel 20 yrs from now"
I always thought she sang "Now that I love you"

I hear "how will we feel 20 years from now". On Enchanted its changed to "how will we feel ten years from now".

I think at the beginning she says "how will I love you" meaning 20 years from now.
then, in the breakdown, it's "how will it feel 20 years from now" - at the very end, if you have the extended version she does also say "now that I love you"
or at least, that's the way I sang it at NOTS.

I am re-listening to this song right now because I honestly have never had ANY idea what our girl was saying in that part. But anyway, I'm watching the video for it on You Tube and I swear, this song brings back so many freaking memories for me. I was at the height of my obsession with her when this came out. I was such a geek! I used to drive around in my camaro with my girlfriends singing this at the top of our lungs. And we used to do the little things with our hands over our face at the instrumental part (we were only like, 18, okay?). :woohoo:

To me it sounds like she is singing it, or it's the backup singers singing it... How will we feel 20 years from now.. How will we feel 20 years from now... [repeated about 6 times] The vocal is manipulated to go higher each time then back down... about 6 times in total. It starts at about 3:40 on the 12 inch version.
She sings the "Now That I Love You" later on in the song.

Does she really sing "now that I love you"? It's been a while since I listened to I Can't Wait, so maybe I missed something. I always thought she was singing a variation on her question "how do I love you," alternating between "how will I love you" and "how can I love you."

One or all of the above.....
Just because those other lyrics "How will we feel..etc" are listed does NOT
mean they were included or that she sang them.
P.S. JAZ would know..lol:nod:

it depends on which part of the song you're listening to. she definitely sings how will I love you and now that I love you, just at different parts of the song.

Unfortunately, since the lyrics aren't printed, we can't be sure what she's singing. Of course, even the printed lyrics have referred to versions different than the one actually recorded for an album (e.g. Gypsy, Nightbird, etc.). I Can't Wait is just one of those songs where her pronunciation is all over the board.

At the end she sings "Now that I love you... now that I love you... how do I love you... now that I love you" (you can hear it in the extended rock mix and the instrumental dub mix (which actually has vocals at the end, so is not actually an instrumental)). When they did the remix they took the one line where she sings "how do I love you" and repeats it several times at the beginning. The mix on the Rock a Little album has a shorter version of the extended rock mix and only has it once at the beginning. The "How will we feel twenty years from now (looking back)" is a spoken sample that plays several times during the extended mix and a few from the Rock a Little album version. If you listen to the single that was on the 45 she doesn't do the "How do I love you part" as the song starts with a little keyboard rift, rather than the more exciting album mix. I don't think the "How will we feel..." part is on the single part except at the beginning where, if you listen really carefully, you can hear it sort of echoey/reverby/processed wafting over the music as it goes from the soft keyboards into the heavy drums. It's almost subliminal, but very cool sounding.
Whew! I need a drink after all that.

I ve only heard 2. theres one with a "spoken " part at the beginning?:shrug:Well, aside from the album version, there's also the "Rock Intro" edit (same as the video version), the "Soft Intro" edit, the Extended Rock Mix (which is the one included on 'Enchanted') and the Dance Mix. There's also the Dub Rock Mix and the Dub Dance Mix (which are largely instrumental, with a few vocal snippets here and there).

Thanks so much for posting these! I have been desperately looking for the cd that contained the instrumental version with the "explosion" in the beginning, but haven't been able to find it yet. Do you happen to remember what CD it was on? I think there were about 4 versions of "I Can't Wait" on it. I don't remember if it was a promo CD or not though.

The only way I remeber all of these alt versions of I Can't Wait was from an EP that my friends and I used to rock out to circa 1986. That was on vinyl. I'd love to know if any of this is on CD with the exception of the Rock Mix on Enchanted.

I had that EP too and I remember what I was most impressed with was the fact that "The Nightmare" turned out to be a remix version! I think I wore out more needles on that one trac than anything else! "Well this is not the world, not the world not the REAL world"! There is definately a cd somewhere. I owned it at one time, but I don't know where the heck it is. During the SYW tour I had a bunch of my CD's stolen out of my car in NJ and I still don't know what ones were taken. I'll check around and see if I can't find out which one it was on. Though I'm sure it's listed in a discography somewhere.
On Edit:
Just went through my CD's and I found the CD I was looking for. Well, the case anyway, who knows where the actual disc is. Anyway, it was the Japanese release of "Love's a Hard Game to Play" It also had the dub version of "I Can't Wait" that you posted, the 12" version, Battle of the Dragons, Sleeping Angel, and the live version of Edge of 17. Hopefully I still have the disc somewhere.

Thanks for those Nightmares! I never heard the second one! The one on the EP was different. I guess you'd call it a remix. I have a crappy MP3 of it somewhere. There is mostly guitar riff in the intro then a basic drum part. Stevie comes in with a "ooohhhh ooohh oohhhhh" a few times then there are bongos. I don't think it was ever put on any CD, but I'm not sure.
Here it is, sorry about the quality, you can hear the transfer was taken from the EP. I think it even skips in the same place my copy used to:
