Remember that "tourist of death" photo that made the rounds after September 11th? As soon as everyone realized it was a fake, thousands of edited photos of the Tourist in compromising situations appeared on the internet. He was like the new Kilroy for a few months.
But did anyone do a Stevie of Death? Well, I have.

I have to say I agree with you. The picture of the woman pushing the baby through the flood in the stroller, and the photo of JFK just before he got his head blown off especially made me cringe. Though some of the photo's like the one with the weird thing coming out of the volcano are funny, the others that show real tragedies that occured, however long ago, are about as funny as the original mentioned photo of the tourist on top of the trade center tower with the plane superimposed behind him. :distress:

But how can you do that without making light of the situation? I imagine someone who had lost a family member or a home in the photo of the flood probably wouldn't find it humerous. Especially in light of the events of Katrina. Sure it's silly looking, but again, I think to use real events that had a profound effect on someone is disrespectful to the people who lived through them, or the memories of the people who were lost in them. What's next, Stevie on the docks of Pearl Harbor during the attack, or perhaps banging her tamborine in line at Auschwitz? It's just not the kind of thing I would laugh at personally, but everyone has a different sense of humor. I just wanted to let BTFLCHLD know I was thinking the same thing.

I didn't say people were laughing at the tragedy, but to use it in this way diminishes their seriousness especially to people who were effected by them. It doesn't bother me if it continues. There are lots of things I don't like, and I'm not egotistical enough to think that me saying I don't like them will get them to stop. Having said that, just because 2 people commented unfaforably about the contents of the thread doesn't mean everyone on the boards loves it. It just means 2 out of the several people posting and commenting in this paticular thread don't. Oh, and it would be easy enough for you to get a photo of Pearl Harbor being bombed, but honestly I think that would be more to get a rise than to be funny. Especially seeing how Stevie feels about vetrans. You'd end up on her Sh**t list for sure.
Now, who was it that mentioned the King Kong and Godzilla one, because THAT would be funny.

Actually hilarity and what is or is not hilarious is completely and totally subjective. So what one finds hilarious another may not and that's just what makes the world go round.
If they images offend - then one has the option of not looking at them.
It's clear that many of us share a demented sort of sense of humor - and the Stevie of Death images are not meant to be disrespectful - but I can understand why some would find them to be so.
Really there is no easy answer here...except to just not partake in the action if you find this sort of thing unsavory

Someone, somewhere, is always going to be offended by anything.
I find the absurdity of some of these completely hysterical in terms of the irony of it. The fact that most of them are at an emotional remove because they are not recent events renders them inoffensive to me.
The Nicole Simpson/Ron Goldman murder scene would cross the line for me, personally. Just because those hideous pictures are in color and it was a bloody, awful crime that no one was ever punished for. I doubt anyone would find that funny. But, I wouldn't bellyache if someone did. Ditto 9/11, as that is a very raw spot for almost everyone at this point in history. Ditto Princess Diana. I have a personal, visceral connection to each of those events. But, again, I wouldn't bother to beat anyone up over it.

That's hardly the same. I never saw the movie, so I'm not sure how it "spat in the face" of Pearl Harbor. I don't think if a movie is made of a true event, and the movie happens to suck, it's being dissrespectful. That would only be true if they set out with the intention of it sucking, or turned it into a comedy. I feel the same is true for the 911 movies. It's not like they made a movie called "911, a musical journey" in the style of the Naked Gun movies.

Well, like you said earlier, these events are just too distant for you or not directly related to any personal connection to you. As long as people understand that like Deanna said, those kind of things are subjective. At some point someone could post an image in a scenario you or anyone might not think is so funny, and if people are going to say humor is subjective, they should be consistant. It's just a personal thing. As far as the guilt thing, I can't speak for anyone else, but that's definately not my intention. I was just commenting to someone else who seemed to share my feelings, then responding to people who were unnecessarily defending their sense of humor. To me no one can make me feel guilty unless I know there is a reason to feel that way.

Thank You. My Brother In Law perished in the Trade Center on 9-11, so I did not find any humor in the "Tourist of Death" photo. You know what ? Of course I am sorry for what you went through. We've all been through tragedies. I could choke a goat with stories of the devastation I've been through as well. Most people can. Everyone has a different way of dealing with their emotions, and everyone has a different sense of humor. I can't say anyone else's way with either is right or wrong. And it isn't at all unusual for you to displace your rage and sadness about your experiences and project it onto the creator of an internet graphic or, for that matter, at me. It's easier than finding the people responsible for your initial trauma. So fire away. My own shit has left me pretty much bulletproof.
The grief and anger life gives us can be enormous. And what you choose to do with yours is your business entirely. Like all of us, I hope you work through yours and find some kind of peace with it.

Who knows? Maybe one can be found of her signing an autograph that could be placed next to John Lennon and his killer. Did a lightbulb just go off, Savage?

I mean I'm sorry that some of you are offened - but we are in no way making fun of the actual events - like Amber said, just the absurd and silly placement of Stevie in all of the photos
So to come in here and say we're making fun of the actual events - snickering at 9-11 -that is so not the case!
And no - one can't make one feel guilty unless they know there's something to feel guilty about. I have to say that though I find these pictures wildly amusing -and many of them made me literally laugh out loud - I also do laugh with a big of guilt...perhaps that part of having a slightly demented sense of humor??

Why dont you backtrack 5 years and sit at work just before nine o'clock and watch the tragedy of 9-11 unfold in front of your eyes, knowing your brother in law is in the trade center and then see if you could snicker. I am so sorry to read this. I watched the 2nd plane hit live on television and it tore to my very core viewing so I can not begin to imagine how you and your family must feel having a family member involved in such a horrific way. It is people like you that I had in mind when I posted what I did. I can view pictures. I am not a child. But, I can not sitback and not express the repulsion my gut feels with the hope that it won't be seen by someone that it will hit harder. I did not see the pictures that this thread refers to (the tourist) but I know all to well how seeing visions such as this can trigger the most traumatic of memories for those involved to a greater degree. I can appreciate the historical value of photographs being taken...we should never forget. However to try to find a humor in such photographs or make additions to them in such a manner as to view them with humor IMO is a mistake towards the vast majority of those personally involved expense.
If you ever want someone to talk to, send me a note. Take care.

Well, the most effective humour is always iconoclastic, I think. And to destroy the power of an image is a way to get it. Sometimes it's just impossible, though and the attempt becomes grotesque, a change that we can accept or not, it depends by personal background, IMO. Can't say i love all the pictures but the one with Hitler is my favourite.

BUT - People who are effected cannot seperate the two and should not be expected to...
Ah, that is a relevant point that I was thinking of. I may agree that understanding is in order when someone cannot separate the two, or doesn't find it funny. That is fine. However, I do think that logically, they can be separated. Largely because I think that everyone knows that no one would ever be laughing at an actual tragedy that occurred.
I do understand that maybe some people are not ready to laugh. But it doesn't necessarily follow that the people who do laugh are remiss. So for people who are not ready to laugh to upbraid the people who do laugh is not so much logical as a knee jerk reaction to pain. Which is fine, totally understandable, but not necessarily a logical reaction. Again because obviously none of us are laughing at the actual tragedy.
I totally see that some people won't find the pics funny, and that is fine. I just hope those people understand that it is not the tragedies we are laughing at. Not to speak for everyone, but I am sure that no one who laughed at the pics in any way diminish the tragedies. So I just want them to know that.
And I do understand that some people might be a little more sensitive to the pictures, and the laughing. So I hope they find comfort in the fact that we are only laughing at the absurdity of super fun lovely Stevie being interspersed with disaster scenes, not at the disaster itself. I would call it the "buggs bunny" reaction - the picture is so funny you can't help but laugh.
And I feel confident that anyone who does not find the pictures funny (perfectly within their rights) would still know that anyone who laughs at them does not do so out of malice or joy at whatever disaster is pictured. I think we all know that to the person, we detest needless violence and destruction.
I don't want anyone's feelings to be hurt, but I also don't not want to laugh at some super funny creative schnizz.
I think the best part right now is that some people who did not think it was funny expressed how they felt, and now we know. So, we are all free to go on from there. We have all viewpoints to draw from. I now know that some of these pics may offend someone, and take it into account, and those offended now know that no one is finding laughter in that which was painful for them, but only from absurd, abstract, silly pictures, and can go on from there.
And that means that we understand other points of view, and can or do not change our behavior accordingly, pursuant to our choice with the evidence presented! Score!
I gotta say, I feel a bottomless pit of sorrow for those affected by 9-11, or Hitler, or the Hindenburg, or our gross environmental negligence. And I still laugh at these photos. And, I don't expect everyone to find them funny, and that is perfectly fine. But it won't make me think these photos are wrong. I think they're lovely, and creative, and brilliant. And it's fine if someone else does not think so, or can't emotionally think so.

Im perfectly aware of life's tragedies. However we are talking about one single event that annihilated thousands. People were in those buildings dying from suffocation, jumping out windows, making phone calls to loved ones, wondering just what the **** was happening. And then as we all know the buildings just collapsed, while millions of people watched. And my city watched and waited in horror of what might happen next. Who's displacing rage towards you? Actually, yeah, you did ask me to...picture something. You did that after quoting me, and you did it in what came off to me as an accusatory, angry, and utterly sarcastic tone. Mmmkay, I appreciate your sarcastic point. I appreciate your pain. All I ask is that you understand that no one, NO ONE - Is finding this funny due to the tragedy, but solely b/c of the visceral funniness of the pics. You know, Stevie interspersed with total destruction?
It's fine if you don't think it is funny. The important thing is that you do realize it may be funny to other people who also have extreme empathy for any hardships/disasters that people have had to endure. I'm sorry our gallows humor with Stevie placed in certain fictional positions of destruction make you mad - but what makes me mad is the misinterpretation of intentions, and the unwillingness to allow for the difference between humor and satire, and that which is really felt.
We've all told you we don't make light of 9-11 or any other tragedy - why are you trying to hold us hostage with "politically correct" actions rather than focusing on our real feelings, which are light years away from finding good in any terrorist act, or any expression of intolerance?! It's downright insulting! It's a slap in the face to any forward thinking ledgie, which includes most ledgies.
We are among the most humanitarian, forward thinking, tolerant people on earth - yet you try to condemn us because we laugh at some pics of STevie interspersed with disasters? We are trying to express some joy and levity, and we're obviosly some great, intelligent, advanced thinkers - but you try to split hairs with us on semantics, and meaningless crap?! It's a travesty! It is not seeing the forest for the trees at it's worst! Do you honestly think that we don't care about every single person that was effected by 9-11? Do you honestly think that any of us have to be reminded of any sorrow? Do you honestly think that any of us derive pleasure from the heinousness that has happened in the world?
If you do, you are woefully mistaken. Our laughter from the Stevie pics has nothing to do with laughing at tragedy. And the fact that you would'nt recognize that, and would imply that those of us who laughed had nefarious motivations that were far uglier, and less tolerant, and blind - than anything an actual cruel person could ever perpetrate - is abominable. We're not cruel people. We don't laugh at tragedy. We don't think it's cool. So please, PLEASE -Take what we say in context, don't try to pin historical responsibility on us just because you can't discern context. That isn't us, that is not how we are. And it pisses us off for you to imply, through faulty logic, that we are that way, that we feel anything less than full sympathy for any tragedy.
I mean, you're making me sick right now, with your shallow misinterpretation. Do you really think that any ledgie wishes ill on any other? Do you really think that any of us think nine eleven was something happy and fun to make jokes of?
Let us not be oversensitive to the point of fault, okay? Can we just assume enough mutual respect that we don't have to call people out for stupid meaningless shit that isn't even happening? That no one even feels?
Thank you! That would be awesome!
Or, you can continue to take umbrage for no, I repeat, no, reason. But that will make you an a-hole, I have to say. To take offense when no one meant offense, and agrees with you, is lamatoid. It's the worst kind of lamatoid arthritis. It is the hardening of the ideas, and the inability to recognize reality, and anything that is important. It's the inflexibility of the mind, the mind that is impervious to logic and new ideas. It's the mind who takes offense based on old paradigms which do not even exist anymore, and have not even been expressed. The mind that takes umbrage on that which they have imagined, rather than what is actually being thought/said, and the intention inherent.
Sad. Let's all catch up to the future, and use our brains to recognize context, shall we? Thus enabling us to pick our battles - of which this should not be one. It is laughable to imply that any ledgie meant ill will by interspersing Stevie's pic with those of well known disasters. It is an epic misinterpretation, a great faltering of brain power, a return to base emotions without logic, and a monument to self absorption without reason. I am insulted, to be honest. Insulted that someone didn't bother to think further than their own emotional reaction. Didn't bother to think about the real intention of the act. And I am dismayed to think that though the logic was readily at hand, some chose to assume a personal affront by anyone who had laughed at the pics, not bothering to think that one extra step ahead - the one where they realized that obviously no opinion expressed was calculated to offend, or even make light of any tragedy. That no laughter resulting from the pic was in any way calculated to make pain for them and their very personal experience with the information.
I mean, C'mon! Less get a grip!

So Nyeah.
The almighty Amber has spoken. If I am making you sick to bad. You are implying way to many things about me. Heed your own advice dear. I posted 3times with a total of about 20 sentences and with this you have pinpointed me as:
Holding Ledgies hostage
Politically Correct (oh yeah Im very politically correct)
Splitting hairs with semantics and meaningless crap (this I find interesting)
Trying to pin historical responsiblity on you (how did you come to this conclusion?)
Have faulty logic
Am being oversensitive to the point of fault
If anyone should get a grip it should be you. Your the one on the tirade. You know absolutely nothing about me, yet your keyboard psychology has come to some very strong conclusions about me. Your the one who dissected my psyche and came to some assinine conclusions. But Im the one who is a shallow and misinformed. OK. If you say so. Thanks.

Although you have edited, this reads quite harsh IMO all things considering. I do believe I would have let angel69 sarc away given her circumstance. I rather wish you would have directed this post towards me as angel didn't/doesn't deserve this. I get the intent behind the photographs. I always did. I just don't find them funny.
Somehow, I've just erased a huge long response to this.
My response wasn't aimed at you, on the contrary I got the impression that you took your objection to the material in the proper context.
Just because people have pain around a subject, doesn't give them a moratorium on talking about said subject. I said lots more smart stuff that I erased, but I don't think that anyone is minimalizing the pain of any of the tragedies, and to say that they are based only on personal feelings rather than the actual context of the views expressed is fallacious and counterproductive. And I do have a problem with such a reactionary reaction, based on nothing.
damn, I had more cool stuff, but I blew my wad. I'll have to refuel. But before I sign off without saying my cool stuff, I would like to say that while I am arguing with Angel's point, and believe his/her foundations for opinion to be midplaced here, I totally think it's fine for Angel to express how he/she feels. But he/she shouldn't make the mistake to think that simply by expressing pain of circumstance, he/she will not encounter opposition. We all have pain. But we all have the capacity for logic, as well, and access to pain does not insure that someone's opinion is right, or will be acquiesced to. But I have respect for opposite points of view. So much respect that I will challenge them logically, as if they all were equal, and equally deserving of scrutiny. Again, pain doesn't make you have the best point. And it shouldn't excuse you from logic. I realize that many times people are not logical, including myself, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be encouraged, it doesn't mean emotions absolve you from real world consequences, realities, or solutions.

and had the time (Battling a summer cold sucks ass), I have one image that needs a Stevie head added onto it, It is a large image of the Children of Bodom album cover in my signature...Of course I would add Stevie's head onto the "Grim Reaper" and change the band's name to "Children of Nicks"
If anyone wants to help accomplish this feel free to PM me.

Okay, fair enough. All I saw is that you were implicitly accusing ledgies who thought the pics were funny of being insensitive, for reasons said ledgies had no obligations whatsoever to think about, and no reason to think about, save the reason that you thought their laughter was offensive, and tried to inspire guilt about it. As if your losses from nine eleven had anything whatsoever to do with our laughter about the Stevie pics. They did not, yet you implied they did. You implied our laughter was wrong and insensitive.
And that is where I get my f*ck you. Because we weren't thinking about losses, weren't laughing about tragedy, and yet you chose to assume umbrage about our reactions anyway, as if they were even remotely related to your existence, which they were not. And for you to use the phrase "almighty" in a sarcastic manner as if I were positing that, just shows some kind of complex you have about me simply stating my thoughts. You stated your thoughts, didn't you? I didn't call you "almighty" anything. I didn't imply that your opinions were "godlike" and irrefutable, or that you were trying to be superior in any way. I take people's opinions as just that, not as some ego challenge where I have to name winners and losers, and where people are trying to be all knowing, or whatever your implication was.
Argue with what I say, but don't let your insecurities pin some kind of personality trait on me that I don't even have, or reasons that don't motivate me. ("almighty", etc).
Just because I disagree with you doesn't mean I'm trying to dominate you, or be right at any cost, or that I have no respect for you. Kindly extend me the same courtesy of intention that I have extended you, one where the phrase "almighty" has never entered my mind, an existence where we are arguing the logic of ideas, without the ego involved, and without anyone bieng given extra points because they have more pain.
Thank you.

It's interesting that Blondie just joined yesterday, and for their first post already has some doozies ready to go. I'd hate to think, though I wouldn't be surprised, that an existing member would register under a new name just for the sake of posting something that they knew would be offensive, and not in the spirit of humor that the original post and images may have been intended. The photo of the tsunami is truely tasteless, and unlike most of the other photos was not even 2 years ago. It's hard to look at that image knowing that most of those people, including children, probably were killed and feel anything remotely close to laughter.

That photo was taken in Hangzhou, China, in 2002, of a tidal bore (unusually high tides resulting in waters flowing upstream at high speeds) on the Qian Tang Jiang River. No one was actually killed in that event.

These images on their own, especially the more recent ones, or those whose events I have spent more time thinking about (the bomb, for example) are painful to look at; however the images with Stevie added are absurd, and provide some relief that allows me to actually consider the disasters pictured. I have reached the point of overload, where I am likely to simply turn away from painful images, so for me, a surreal, or absurd black humor is a useful inroad to engagement with difficult subjects.
Stevie has talked a lot about turning her personal pain into art, and alternately claimed that some of her songs are about personal tragedy, or a public tragedy. The lines blur for her, somtimes to the point of ridiculousness, and these images remind of that ridiculous, melodramatic Stevie. If I am laughing, when I see these pictures, it is mostly at that Stevie, with her schoolgirl vanity and self-importance.
She managed to turn a top hat with a scarf—a symbol of mourning—and raggedy tattered Dickensian clothing, into a fashion statement. We have seen her dancing down a Depression era street in her sack dress singing about her "Gypsy", and we know there were breadlines there, and homeless, but she twirls and sings anyway, like Gene Kelly Singin' in the Rain.
Here is a link to an interesting paper on Surrealist Black Humour.
http://www.surrealismcentre.ac.uk/publications/papers/journal1/acrobat_files/Suleiman.pdf
p.s. I sometimes find offensive the real—not Photoshopped— images of stars and politicians at scenes of disaster, for example, I am thinking of Bush's photoops at Ground Zero, or photos of Bono or Sean Penn in Iraq.

Talk back to my parents ? HA. A backhand or the soap.
I broke each rule ONCE. Never again. The punishment was swift and brutal.
Follow the rules ? Freedom and praise.
The result ? Straight A's in school, perfect credit, no criminal record, and a pretty damned good life. Oops. Not sensitive enough for current political climate. Ah well. It was a good trade.

Such things would probably get a parent sued or thrown in jail now.

OMG while laughing was my reaction, if Stevie only knew what we were doing with her image, we would be the victims of her wrath I am sure. We all would get killed in one wicked intense look of death.
Edit: On the Titanic one too, I took me a little while to find Stevie but my husband looked over and actually said "why is Stevie in the corner of that photo"? And I was like, "oh there she is" (and I had to explain the Stevie of Death to him), which he thought was a bit odd, but he knows I have a sense of humor when it comes to my fandom for Stevie. You almost have to.

Anyone have some suggestions for some appropriate background music?
Here's the first one:

These photos are offensive and some are creatively funny. But no more Hitler and presidental assassinations and KKK's....That's not funny.

Funnily enough in my spare time I'm attempting to write a novel, and the main character is some kind of weird musician guy who is married to a singer based on Stevie Nicks. He does all this fire stuff on stage as part guitarist/part illusionist. This picture could almost be straight out of my imagination.

I know that this is a controversial thread...but....when it gets resurrected, I am amused by all the creativity. (And yes, I laugh and am in awe with the situations, people create.)
SortaSavage do you have any idea of the popularity of this thread?
My compliments to
Dr. Brown (hot, hot, hot),
IKV Nexis (that boat and Paris!) and
Blondie85 (John Lennon & burning papers)
It reminds me of Alfred Hitchcock, who used to put himself in all of his movies. It was a challenge to find him. Sometimes his face would appear on a newspaper, in the shot, or he'd be found as a man in the crowd.
This Stevie thing is kind of like a Weird version of Where's Waldo. I don't think that there is disrespect involved...but that's just my humble opinion...

It's like the opposite of Forrest Gump. Forrest happened to be around when all the great things in history occurred. Stevie is placed in all of the disasters. As for Hitchcock, he had a hard time working his way in for Rope, but he managed.
