"Sara" really is about Stevie's abortion?....
http://www.canada.com/montrealgazette/news/books/story.html?id=b256c3f1-bb18-4f7a-a346-9bd791319535
But individually, they were having fun. The Eagles' Don Henley was a notorious womanizer and would regularly send Lear jets to pick up his latest conquest - such as Fleetwood Mac's troubled, heavy drinking singer Stevie Nicks, who became his lover for a short time in 1975.
"Henley's Lear jet pickups became so legendary," writes Hoskyns, "that he himself later coined the phrase 'Love them and Lear them.' Nicks must have felt the bitter-sweet irony of that phrase when she became pregnant by Henley and found herself pressured into having an abortion. Sara, her heartbreaking song about the aborted child, became a Top 10 hit for Fleetwood Mac in 1979."

I wouldn't call that a confirmation, but it echoes Don Henley's statement to GQ magazine that he "believes" "Sara" was written for the child he fathered and Stevie aborted.

I don't think that confirms anything either. And the only thing that bothers me about Sara being about an aborted fetus, is the very notion Stevie would be crazy enough to write a song like that about it.
I don't believe and I never have. To me it's always going to be about an affair that broke up a friendship. It just makes more sense.

I'd suggest that some Eagles or Don Henley fan site might have it, but the fans of a lot of other artists don't seem to compile various articles and reviews with the amount of care that Mac fans do.
I'm trying to remember when it was published... I read it in the library, years before I worked there. I'm thinking maybe around 1990?

Don Henley: Too Many Choices (http://www.eaglesfans.com/info/articles/too_many_choices.htm)
If you can't be bothered to read the full article, here's the paragraph about Stevie....
Henley’s prodigious romantic escapades would include an affair with Stevie Nicks, who “I believe to the best of my knowledge became pregnant by me. And she named the [unborn] kid Sara, and she had an abortion”-and then wrote the song of the same name “to the spirit of the aborted baby. I was building my house at the time, and there’s a line in the song that says ‘And when you build your house, call me.’

They probably felt like they had a fantastic affair with a sleazy rock star. I mean, someone flies a jet out to pick you up, you must be a hell of a piece of ass. Stevie even bragged about it in some article...I think it was Us when Timespace came out. She talked about her FABULOUS life and having a little cranberry Lear jet come fly her out to hook up with someone she was having an affair with. Even if it's a one nighter, that's pretty flattering. I doubt anyone ever mistook Don Henley for a gentleman. He has a notorious reputation for womanizing. For crying out loud, Heidi Fleiss wrote about him. Or one of those hookers who wrote a book.
I'll agree it was crude to discuss said Sara incident in the press. But again, I am not defending Don Henley. I just don't think anyone ever had a booty call with him thinking it was anything but that. Come on ! A Learjet coming to pick your ass up ? Most people are lucky to get cab fare or breakfast after a one nighter. Half the time, a groupie has to blow three roadies just to get backstage. Could be worse, you could get herpes and the door hitting you on the ass on the way out.

If it makes you feel better, despite what Don says, I don't think that "Sara" is about an aborted baby... I believe, as is the case with most all of Stevie's songs, that was probably just one small part of the inspiration for the song.
In fact, Stevie's made comments about "Sara" that back up that theory -- saying that it was about "all of us in Fleetwood Mac and the various things we were going through at the time."

You beat me to posting the article. :) I'd like to think that we do our best to have lots of Eagles and related articles on our site. We have tons more sitting here around the house, but just don't have the time to get them all scanned and on the site. One of these days....
I know I'm not going to change anyone's mind about Don, but he's really not a macho pig rock star or whatever it was someone said. Yes, he has his asshole and diva moments, but the Don I've met (several times) is nice, witty, funny, charming, and genuinely cares about his fans. I won't bore you with all the gushing details. I just think it's unfair to think that Don is still the same person today that he was in the mid-70s. How many of us here are the same person we were 30 years ago? Is Stevie still the same person she was then? Give him a break. Times change....people change.
End of Henley-loving rant. :)

It always surprises me how few articles and reviews are to be found on fansites for other artists. I think, aside from a complete discography and a lyrics section, an article archive is the most important thing to include in a website.

Times change....people change.Plus, it should be noted that Stevie has quite obviously forgiven Don for letting it slip, and she has said on more than one occasion that he was extremely apologetic to her about it.
She still loves and adores him... he was even one of the first people she called (after her mother) when she needed a pep-talk to stay on the road after the events of 9/11... so I think that says it all.

The Don Henley article always bothered me and I did kinda believe it because Stevie said he had to apologize to her about 100 times before she forgave him for saying that in a magazine. However the song Sara, with Stevie saying it was like 20 minutes long then cut to 7 then 4 or 5, and with the lyrics so difficult to put together, it really is hard to say.
The song that makes me cry and think of a possible abortion is, Goodbye Baby. I know - I know - I know. But it does remind me of an abortion.
For whatever that was worth.

Why is that so bad ? If he wasn't sure, he wasn't sure.
In interviews I've read he always seems rather vague about the affair. 'It was an on/off thing' is how he described it - which is hardly a ringing endorsement of love and committment.
He would have been riding the Hotel California fame wave around this time and was probably dating several other women during the 'off times.'
Maybe Stevie was doing the same. So he genuinely couldn't be sure because Stevie couldn't be sure

This quote totally confuses me...my interpretation is that she's saying what Don said is true, she did get pregnant by him but that he fucked up by telling everybody and he didn't tell the whole story, there's more to it. What does she mean by "what really happened"? Either she got pregnant and had an abortion or she didn't....
Still, shame on him! Even he acknowledged he was wrong if he called her 92 times to apoligize. She could have been so bitter and totally bad mouthed him here but she didn't, she answered very diplomatically IMO. What a class act our girl is!

I don't read it like that, I read it as he knew darn well she was pregnant by him and had an abortion but that he was just trying to tip-toe around it by saying "I believe to the best of my knowledge..." instead of outright declaring it so he wouldn't seem like a big mouth. Just like Stevie said, he let the cat out of the bag. That's perfectly clear to me.

I'm going to jump back in here and defend Don on this one. (Waves to Henley Fan :wavey: ) The way he said it in the article, to me it sounds like he is being somewhat careful, even in making a statement he shouldn't have said. It is common PR skills that you don't speak for other people. He was part of that story and had a right, no matter how tacky it was to discuss it, but he still gave Stevie an out by saying, "I believe, to the best of my knowledge".
Stevie could have said, "I don't know what Don was smoking back then but his knowledge and my knowledge don't really jive" or whatever.
She does adore him. They are close friends, former lovers and they both continue to do stuff for each other. How many Arizona Heart Institute benefits has he missed? She does the Yellow Rose Gala for him and his wife in Dallas every few years. It is in her journals that she called him on 9/11 and he knew exactly the right words to say to her. She even thanked God for Don and her mother at the close of her journal that day.
Stevie hasn't been used and abused by anyone. She has picked her many wonderful and exciting lovers and enjoyed the wonderful highs and devastating lows that came with each person. The only person she has openly spoken unkind of is Lindsey. Why do people want to beat up on Don?

All your points are valid here and I don't mean to "beat up on Don". I just think it was in poor taste to tell the world she had an abortion and not really his place. If she wanted people to know she would have spoken about it herself prior to this and I think he should have respected her privacy even if he had a part.
I'm glad that they are still close friends to this day, I think that says a lot about who they both are as people.

I think he knew darn well too she was pregnant, but was trying to be diplomatic as he spoke about it, as someone else said (waves back to Patty :) ). For whatever it's worth, Don totally hates this interview and lovingly refers to it as "that piece of crap."
I think you're totally misreading it, but we'll have to agree to disagree, I guess. :)

Exactly how long do you have to be a fan not to be considered a newbie? Is 27 years long enough?

The way I read it he's saying she may or may not have been pregnant...to the best of his knowledge she may or may not have gotten pregnant and then had the abortion, etc.
I don't see at all how he's implying she was a slut or whatever, but some people want to believe the worst about Don, always.
I like Don Henley - A LOT. I'm a fan. But at first read, it sounds like he never knew for sure if it was his baby. To not see AT ALL how this could be taken that way is like one of us saying "I don't see at all how Stevie could have been on drugs."

I stand by what I said. It's how I read the interview. Like I said before, I guess we're going to have to agree to disagree.

Interestingly, Don, who I really like, did nothing to stop that image. I guess he, like most of the Eagles, eschews interviews and who knows, La Nicks could have forbidden him from any further comment.
To me, her reply comment was not venomous at all. She was almost jovial about the reconcialiation. So, clearly she was not that all upet about it in the big scheme of things, though I readily admit I would not have told a mag. that.
Also, good to see ya around here!!!!

I think Stevie looks as equally freaky. So serious and vacant, sort of like a Stepford wife.
She didn't seem to be able to move her face much on that tour (SYW) too much Botox I'd say.

I agree with you. Seems like she is saying that she did have an abortion but Don did not tell the entire story behind it. I don't think she was saying the situation didn't happen.

Plus she said "the fact that I had an abortion" confirms she was pregnant and had it terminated.

The song that makes me cry and think of a possible abortion is, Goodbye Baby. I know - I know - I know. But it does remind me of an abortion.
For whatever that was worth.
Patty
I feel the same. Goodbye Baby reminds me of a song that could be about an abortion as well.

I think it's pretty straightforward. Don put his foot in his mouth, Stevie forgave him, all is well. :) You gotta wonder what he was thinking, though, when he spouted off about that!
