She was totally rockin' on the Petty tour, and at the MJF. Is the real Stevie finally back?

I submit she rocked the entire time on the Gold Dust tour - starting with the Vegas shows.
I think she was intentionally subdued in the SYW tour because she is part of a band, etc. - and she pretty much has said things that are dispositive of this - plus she hurt her hip and was in menopause (her musical :D )
I also think she tried to rock on the TISL tour, but 9/11 and her failing voice prevented that.
Finally, on the Enchanted tour, she flat out rocked.
So, I think only the SYW shows were the subdued ones.

Totally agree
I think she decided to be more subdued for SYW from her conservative rhiannon dress to her stage presents. SYW was an exception the rule for whatever reason.

For the GDW Aus tour she didn't rock out, well i should say that is really dwarfs in comparision to the voice and energy on the Tom Petty tour.
Also really wanting to hear some more of this MJF!!! So far my ears have only been privlidged to a very basic recording.... and i need more! more! lol

Did anyone actually see the TISL tour? ;) Girlfriend was blah as Hell. I am sure she was great at some shows but overall, she was uninspired. This was before 9/11 too. Fans will say "it was her bronchitis/pneumonia" or 9/11...maybe she had issues at the beginning of the SYW tour? Menopause, messed up hip, asthma..who knows? Blaming Lindsey is a scapegoat, she rocked the last leg of the SYW tour. The Melbourne boot is blah city...sorry but Lindsey wasn't there "forcing her to be demure". Puhleeze. :distress: (Just like he did not force her to wear that stupid cardigan...she chooses her wardrobe...once again, he is the scapegoat. She knew fans hated it, so she tossed the blame off on him  )

She definitely rocked at the Hartford, CT and Mansfield, MA shows on the TISL tour (both were at the beginning of July). Sheryl was at both of those shows, too. But on all the other shows that I've seen on dvd from the TISL tour, she was subdued, like you describe.

I am unsure La Nicks wore the granny sweater because LB held her down and froced her to do it. I think she chose it because (1) she like like, which she says she did and (2) when she is with FM since likew 1987, she is conscious of the fact that though she may be the most popular member, she is, as she readily notes and has noted for years, not the star - so she chooses to tone it down a little. She also said that LB has expressed dismay at her flamboyant nature, so I see nothing wrong with her bending a little to allay his fears, etc. But, that is not the same as LB making her do something
Also, her vocals on Rock and Roll were stellar as were her vocals on Circle Dance and, hold onto your hat., B&B. So, IMO she rocked on the Gold Dust tour.

Did anyone actually see the TISL tour? ;) Girlfriend was blah as Hell. I was just gonna say, "so what was her excuse on the TISL tour?"
In 2001, she wore exactly the same thing every night, & what she wore wasn't terribly eye-catching, to say the least (except for the Mad Hatter top hat with the feathers).

I realize this is sort of a novel approach for fans, but why don't we examine Stevie's actual statement or statements?
The only one I ever read was indicating an almost rhetorical question that Buckingham asked her at some point in rehearsal--something like, "Do you need to be so flamboyant?" or whatever. What exactly did she say he said?
And are there other statements she made about this? In the old days, she said that the rest of the band probably looked at her in her bat wings as a little kooky, but never suggested the idea that she dressed to please them. (Besides, look at my sig picture & you'll see Chris dressed up like Stevie.)
Fans' thinking is incoherent. If Lindsey had demanded she look like a frump, how on earth would he have backed up such a demand? By withholding her salary? By knocking her over the hood of his car? By pulling his jacket up over his head in a grotesque imitation of her Rhiannon dance? By writing another "Go Your Own Way" about her cheating ways?

In a fairly recent interview - La Nicks said that she consciously tones it down for FM shows because LB said that her stage clothes are too much. So, she said she went out and got that little black cardigan she wore on the SYW tour. She also refered to the cardigan as fabulous. I cannot find the exact quote, but that is gist of it.
In the end, I think she is doing what everyone in a long term relationship with a group of people does - she compromises a little for the good of the band

I love how we can discuss this with...eh hem...all honesty LOL
We all know Lindsey told her to tone it down...the bastard has been jealous of her sucess for years and he can't stand it....we all know that Lindsey is an f'ing BRILLIANT guitarist...as good as Clapton, Hendrix, etc...and he deserves success as well....
I guess we all see how Stevie complied for the sake of the group...it still pisses me off....Perhaps all the ladies know what I mean when I say that it makes me angry, and laugh when I'm in the mall and see a display of black, pearl buttoned down sweaters! LOL :D

 Exactly. But a lot of us cringe at that choice. I hope I never see that again and I would love for her to throw out her black dress for a completely redesigned one. Perhaps one with more of an empire waist so she can stop wearing corsets! A nice A-line would be very flattering.

Stevie: "This show is going to be like nothing I have ever done. There is not going to be anybody looking at me saying 'you can't wear that, that's too short, or that's too flamboyant'. So I am going for it, I am going to absolutely have the time of my life getting to do something that I really have never gotten to do before."
Jim Ladd: "Who the hell in their right mind would look at you and go 'that's too short, or too tight, or...'?"
Stevie: "Well, think about it..."
Jim Ladd: "Oh, I am thinking about it."
Stevie: "Well, you know, Mr. Buckingham has never been crazy about my flamboyant clothes. And I've just come off of a 135 shows where his comment to me was 'Can't you just be a little more casual?'"
[Laughter]
"So I said 'okay!' and I went into a little black sweater that comes up to here with little pearl buttons and I did exactly what he wanted, I became way more casual for the Fleetwood Mac shows. And you know, it was great, it was fine, and actually it was a very fabulous outfit. It was little more sedate, but it was still fabulous. But this is different than even going on the road and doing a few shows. This is Las Vegas. My grandmother would have said 'This is the circus'."
She doesn't sound all that traumatized to me. He asked if she could be a little more casual, and she wore something a little more sedate. I don't get from this that he forced her to wear the granny sweater.

She probably just didn't tell the public cuz she didn't want MORE prolems with lindsey.
As for tisl, she was in menopause. what do you expect in that stage?
GD tour, se was awesome, but towards the end, with her dad dying, she slowed down. i think she was still getting over it in Aus/NZ. I think she is finally coming back now!

I agree, it was totally a Stevie decision. I mean who wants to cope with Lindsey's passive aggressive mood....:D Just kidding. I think the day she wouldn't find the urge to tone down when she's onstage with him, even if he doesn't say a word, she'll be free. I suspect it would never fully happen.

By the 2nd leg of the SYW tour I thought she was totally rocking out. I love the Madison Square Garden boot...she is totally rockin it!! I mean I think she rocked it a bit more on SYW than the GD tour (not Henley/Vegas shows). As for the last leg of the SYW tour, at my show all her clothes were different..RAL jacket...Blue Lamp Shawl....White Wrap (2 different ones for 2 diff songs)..then of course the Sara shawl...beautiful.

Holy Lord...those pictures are hellacious. Girlfriend was probably in her "Dark Cafe Days"...as I like to call them....a Joni Mitchell lyric...referencing periods in one's life when they aren't their best and want to keep to themselves during a crisis, but still need to be out there doing what they need to do to survive. (I love the lyrics..."I'm gonnablow this damn candle out..I don't want nobody coming over to my table, I've got nothing to talk to anyone about...All good dreamers pass this way someday - hiding behind bottles and dark cafes....only a dark cocoon before I get my gorgeous wings and fly away...only a phase - these dark cafe days..." I'm going through this now...so I guess this reference is strong in describing how those Stevie pictures look to me. Although...I don't have baby fat and crazy hair! )
All I can say is...that's not "my" Stevie in those pictures. Cocaine - that evildoer - was gripping her in those days.

And to answer the thread question, I'm not sure what is meant by being "back". For me, being "back" means being early 80's Stevie, and that's not going to happen, nor should it.
I do think she is in a very good place in her life, seems quite happy, trying some fun and different events (if not fun and different set list) and looks/sounds great. I was depressed watching her in SYW and I'm totally enjoying her lately.

I have to disagree. I think if stevie really sits down and actually thinks about it, and looks back into her journals, i think she can recall EVERYTHING, ad that she WILL tell it in her book. I think Lindsey might be too embarassed about the truth to write it (if he even writes an autobio.) Just my opinion.

If anyone would like it here's the pic I used for the cover. It was up for auction on Ebay and I think it was went for over $200. I had to get rid of the "thanks for looking" stamp over her titties so it's not the best quality but it's FREE.

Boots!!!
No..no "dark cafe days" for you...keep your chin up my friend!!!
LAST TIME I SAW BOOTS WAS IN DETROIT IN 68!!!

You need to get on the Joni train. It takes years to work through her massive catalogue and it is a friggin joyride. I worship her. She dwarfs nearly everyone with her vision and talent. PM me for recommendations, and I can yousendit a few things. Way back when, I converted Diss with about 5 songs.
Joni Mitchell is BRILLIANT!!!

Thanks! I'm just anticipating a juicy bio about her, and think I'd trust Lindsey's version more than Stevie's.
You are GENIUS!!!:xoxo:

.....or make her look really bad.I don't know -- I tend to think that if there was anything seriously negative about Stevie (such as forcing Third World children to make her platform boots), someone would've sold her out years ago. All other "juicy" topics... from her difficulties with commitment to the abortion(s) and the cocaine addiction... have been covered.

Dude, just think of all the lovers she's had and what they could say about her. Not that I really care about that but she was also quite the partier and has been seen in her worst moments by many people on tour. Still I think she must be a pretty great person overall and people who know her really love her enough not to want to say anything. She doesn't seem to burn bridges (or none for very long at least) but I don't think there's a shortage of dirty laundry in her background to go through.

I can't think of a famous '70s rock & roller who didn't party hard and have multiple sex partners. So it just seems to me that, barring any extreme and heretofore unmentioned transgression, anything that someone could say about Stevie would just seem like typical rock star behaviour.

They either love her too much to hurt her, or they're scared to death of her! ;)

I think as others have said, that people are tremendously loyal to Stevie. Ultimately, that comes from the fact that she is a decent human being. Even though she has/had moments where she was OTT in her behavior, or even nasty to people, she is the type of person you just forgive of it. I have heard barely second hand trash from people extremely close to her, who still remain close to her. There is no doubt in my mind that she has some crazy skeletons in her closet, but I believe they tend to be extremely personal things. It's not like she has tremendous screeching fits and fires people and treats them like garbage in crowds (ahem, Streisand). She's not that kind of person. So, the dirt, however much there is, just ain't coming out. It is simply not on the scale that is going to generate a scandal.

She definitely rocked at the Hartford, CT and Mansfield, MA shows on the TISL tour (both were at the beginning of July). Sheryl was at both of those shows, too. But on all the other shows that I've seen on dvd from the TISL tour, she was subdued, like you describe.
She was bland as hell at the Nissan stop on the tour and I ripped her a new one on Enchanted for it.
She rocked the feck out of Merriweather Post Pavilion later in the tour though.
As for SYW, she was pretty bland at the first MCI Center (now Verizon Center) show, but she was much more into the second MCI Center show.
I think she was mostly playing it safe during the GDW tour stop at Nissan, but she did a few things that were impressive (she was emotionally into the show from what I could tell, even if the vocals were a bit on the safe side). Her "Stand Back" twirls put Live In Boston to shame in that show.

She used to look so cool twirling when she was young. She looked like a star in the Jose Greco troupe. But I think that nowadays she just looks sort of oafy when she twirls. Sort of wobbly or pudgy--if you were to spin a full bottle of vegetable oil, that's the effect.

If she wears the platform boots, she stands at the mike like a statue with hip replacement surgery on the horizon. With the Frankenboots, she's at least moving around.
I'll take Stevie moving around in ugly Reeboks over Stevie barely being able to move in platforms any day of the week.
