I know these songs are difficult to compare but I have recently converted my friend to a mac/Stevie fan and have lent her everything up to Rock a Little and she says she thinks BATB is crap and that The Highwayman is fantastic. I disagree. The Highwayman is good..BATB is AMAZING! Any thoughts peeps?

I don't think there is any contest between the two - and I think most Ledgies would agree with that.
'Beauty & the Beast' is one of Stevie's most heartfelt and amazing songs - and while 'The Highway Man' is nice enough - it is not on the level of 'Beauty & the Beast'
'The Highway Man' is possibly the only song on 'Bella Donna' I get tempted to skip.....

The Highwayman is a listen-to-once-every-six-months song.

Highwayman is one of my fav.'s ever. I think the lyrics are better than B&B - but they are both great to me.

Beauty is a bigger favorite of mine, but I think Highwayman is a better song.

Sheesh. Odd. BATB is a different animal. The Highwayman is okay, but I cannot take seriously any song that begins with the word alas.
It always brings to mind a lass or an ass.

I think Beauty and the Beast is probably the strangest song Stevie ever took on the road. It's like her very own rock opera.

The Highwayman, no contest. BATB is too masturbatory and ... something ... for me. Kind of like HAEWAFY. Ugh.

About the songs. I used to love the Highwayman (though Sparky is right about "alas", that is kind of stinky) because it sounded authentically country to me, and I liked her voice singing that style of song. I think it is well-crafted, but by that I mean it follows a sort of standard form, and that could also be considered predictable. It sounds like a song she could have sold easily, and that it could have been sung by any number of uninteresting country singers. When I have listened to the song recently, it has sort of bored me.
BATB, on the other hand used to bug me, and I especially disliked the line "where is my beast". I loved the Cocteau film, though. Recently, I have listened to all of the live cuts posted, and I have been singing it to myself, and I really love parts of the melody. I especially like "Oh who is the beauty...who the beast
Would you die of grieving when I leave
Two children too blind to see
I would fall in your shadow...I believe" I think her voice can really soar in this song, and it still to inspire passion in her voice. So, I like BATB better now, and The Higwayman, less now.
There. I have said nothing definitive.

I agree with the majority that B&TB is legions above highwayman. I don't think I have ever even listend to HM in it's entirety because I can't bare it. I used to skip B&TB as well, but now it is in my top 5 favs of stevie's. I'm very weird like that. I won't listen to a song because it rubs me the wrong way. But then one day I guess I have a mood change and it touches me. Same thing happened with Sleeping Angel. OMG how I hated that song. And everyone would rave and rave about it and I just didnt' get it. Then one day I did and I love it. Which works out perfectly. It's like I discover little stevie greats over time so I'm not listening to the same thing over and over. Maybe one day I'll discover the highwayman. But I doubt it.

Most of Stevie's songs take awhile to hit me..I don't love all of them.
I did love BATB right way...Stand Back took time..once again..her vocals had changed after Bella Donna & Mirage.

Even the title of this thread is blasphemous to me- I adore B&TB.
It's a tie. Both songs exemplify Stevie's romanticism at its best.
