Which songs do you think are absolute masterpieces that will/have gone unheard by the general public? Songs that are just right up there with the best of the best?
Im a firm believer that 'Rose Garden' and 'Escape from Berlin' are the two forgotten masterpieces from Stevie's back catalogue - they are top notch writing and are just brilliant in every aspect
What other songs do you think belong under the 'forgotten masterpiece' title??!!!

I just wanted to say how lame Rose Garden is, I can't believe you picked it.
I think Kind of Woman should be more well known. That's Alright. Angel, especially.

Mmm. I agree with "Kind of Woman" and "Thats Alright" - but I don't really think of "Angel" as a masterpiece - a 'fun' song sure, but I don't consider it elite :sorry: :p

That's why it is elite. A fun Stevie song.
But really, it's more unusual than you are giving it credit for, I think. And the words are loverly. I think it could have been a nice, widely liked little radio hit.
Some people really like Rose Garden. I like it better this year than I ever did before, when it made me cringe and barf.

Yeah - I do like 'Angel' - but its never been one of my favourites - Im trying to change my opinion of it, or at least Im trying to change ;)
"Rose Garden" took a while to really sink in with me also - but the amount of times you've listen to 'Street Angel' - it should have happened long ago  It tells a great story - one of the most clear and coherent lyrics Stevie has ever written....

It really is special. It's haunting, music wise. I know it says "haunt" in the lyrics, but I wasn't thinking of that. The music is strange to me, like one of those alternate world weird circuses. I know, that doesn't make sense, I can't think of a better way to describe it.
So, I guess the music is perfect for the lyrics.

That is very true, but I've never cared about that. I basically don't like the music and the melody. Didn't she write it when she was 17, though? Pretty impressive.

Very impressive. And its amazing how at that time of Stevie's life - those lyrics she wrote all those years ago became relevant to her life in 1994 - and possibly her life even now....

I know exactly what you mean. I'm trying to write a response to this and I'm watching Rockstar Supernova, and stupid Magli singing Crush is making it impossible. Ok, he's done.
This song is so different from Stevie's other songs.
You didn't mean to meet her you cry
Oh but the sun goes down every night

I think all the unknown & little-known Stevie songs are masterpieces! I love them all. I'm one of those fans who believe that Stevie never wrote a bad song. Every song of hers is a gift to us, & each song offers a fascinating glimpse into her world. She is there to teach us & to embrace us, to soothe us & to love us.
She is our Ultimate.
Blessed Be, everyone.
P.S. This topic reminds me of something on the 7 dunders board.

I didn't really think about Rose Garden when SA first came out but that year on the tour she told the story about how she wrote it when she was only 16 or something like that. It was such a cute story and made me really listen to the song. I was hooked after that. It still gets me teary eyed when I sing along with it.

I don't think Stevie has any forgotten masterpieces. I would agree that Storms and TISL are undiscovered by many and are epic. But in terms of demos, the ones I love all either have huge flaws re: lyrics or bridges (Something Exquisite and Space Needle being prime examples), or are simply not even close to being finished songs. She has recorded the prime stuff from the "vault". She better have, she has been mining it for 20 years.

I thought we were thinking also of songs that were on albums, but didn't get airplay and hardly anyone heard them. A la Angel, or Beautiful Child. And if you say BC isn't a masterpiece, I'll have to KYA. That being the case, I think she has tons of unheard masterpieces. Album cut ones. Think of "Belladonna" and "Wild Heart" - title tracks even - and most of us think those songs are good - Did joe shmoe hear those songs? Probably not. Thus, undescovered masterpieces!
No one and their mom heard "Kind of Woman", or "Storms" but they are stunning and perfect nonetheless. And the list goes on.

I too love Kind of Woman and That's Alright.
Blue Lamp is one of my absolute favorites--I love to sing along at the top of my lungs-- but its lyrics are so out there that I don't think I'd call it a "masterpiece." The out-there lyrics are one of the reasons I love it so, however.
And, I thought I didn't really care for most of OSOTM, so it shocked the hell out of me when I really listened to Doing the Best that I Can and discovered it's a great song. I don't know about masterpiece, but people should definitely pay more attention to it.
Finally, I agree with Sparky about a good portion of the demos that Stevie hasn't yet officially recorded. There are reasons why she hasn't recorded them. However, I do agree that some of the demos for songs she HAS recorded are better than the originals, like No Light/Planets and Smile at You.
(Wow, I'm feeling the love for Stevie today more than usual, but you could never tell it from the above post! It's okay not to love everything she's ever done...it's okay...)

First one that comes to mind is How Still My Love. It's not my favorite song...probably not even in my top ten, but there is something about it that screams Masterpiece to me, and yet it is widely unknown.
Next one is Bella Donna. I think she should have released this song as a single instead of After the Glitter Fades. The piano playing is brilliant and IMO her best song next to EO17.
Few others:
1. Sleeping Angel
2. Storms (Gotta give Lindsey credit too)
3. Sisters of the Moon (though it was released as a single it did not do well at all)

Why did she even release After the Glitter Fades? I like it, but it's not great. I always felt Outside the Rain would've made a far better choice for a final single from Bella Donna.

I suspected this was released as a single with the half assed idea of some kind of country crossover. At the time, I remember it getting played a few times on country radio where I lived. However, I don't recall any ads in billboard or a real concrete effort to get country radio to play it. A bit of a drag, as the country market is something the record label people could have tried to pull into the Stevie fold years ago. I mean, if Bon Jovi can have a number one country hit in 2006, I am sure Stevie could have had a lot of success there a long time ago. Seriously doubt it will ever happen now.

It's funny- but I wasn't thrilled with that song when it first came out, but it definitely grew on me over the years. My husband is not a huge Stevie fan (although you can be sure he knows how to act like one when when the moment is called for) but he really loves that song.

I like it, but I don't really think about it much. But it is sort of odd to me because remember those songwriting rules that Lindsey always used to refer to by pointing to Stevie as a negative example? Well, "After the Glitter Fades" actually obeys every single one of those rules. It's actually just about Stevie's most perfect classically constructed pop songs. . . which just goes to show that good form & audience impact don't necessarily correlate in direct ratio.

After The Glitter Fades performed respectably at radio and on the charts (#32), considering it was the fourth single release from Bella Donna. It crossed over to Pop, AC, and country radio formats.

I don't like "Starshine," either. It doesn't make me shivah.
"Goodbye Baby" is quite underappreciated, but it does not quite deserve the title of "forgotten masterpiece" (or, for David, ~*~*forgotten mystical masterpiece*~*~) because it was performed on the Say You Will tour and featured in the Destiny Rules documentary. At the show I saw most people left before "Goodbye Baby" was over, however. Its sweet, hushed tones were missed by those who decided not to stick around for "Goodbye Baby" to close the show or album. What a shame.
Who is the HOTTIE in your sig pic??? *drools* LOL!!!
He should play Lindsey...
