I actually quite like this song! I've heard that many fans don't - is this because she didn't write it, or do you not like to vocal or what? Just curious.

You know, a lot of us consider this time period to be Stevie's blah zombified stage, but her vocals on TOSOTM are surprisingly good for the most part. I know it was early into her Klonopin addiction, so perhaps when she was recording the album it wasn't a problem yet?

Musically, it's pretty crisp, not muddy to my ears. I love the piano especially.

OK, so, yeah, I do like the vocal on this tune. Pretty strong, I like her pronunciation (sp) of the lyrics and the way she times them with the music. The lyrics themselves are very Stevie, she could have written this song. I guess that's why it doesn't bother me that she did someone else's tune - it fits her very well.

Fave lines:
"You can try but you can't get me...
Into the fire {her voice just SOARS here!}
'Cause I'm all out of sympathy...
And, baby, I can't walk this wire

Find yourself somebody new
To catch you when you fall
'Cause I got just one thing to say to you
And, baby, that's all..."

I must tell you that I chuckle every single time I hear it. Can't remember who told us this, I think it was in one of the "misheard lyrics" threads a couple of years ago. Ryan? Justin? jimmy? Can't remember. Anyway, they said that their friend or roommate did a Stevie impersonation & when they sang "you just had to try those wings" they pretended they were eating chicken wings. So thank you for that, whoever you are. I laugh every single time I hear that line.

I really like this one too. there's something, musically, that has like a reverbish kind of effect that I really like...almost like it's acapella, but you hear a little music, I can't really explain it, but that's what I like about the music. the chorus is, again, the downside of this song. the pleasure is in the verse that you quoted...my fav...along with the way her voice sounds on:

If you start to stumble
If you start to crack
If you're feeling humble...
Don't look back

the way she pronounces crack and her voice kind of cracks...ohhhhh. love it.

I don't like Laura Branigan's version AT ALL. it's a good song...I give it a sturdy 7.

Yeah, true. Apart from that .... nah, I'll pass. It's one of the low points on an otherwise brilliant album.

It's just sort of uninteresting, I find. Sorry! :(

Love it. Regardless of whether Stevie wrote it or not, I think it fits perfectly in TOSOTM. This is one of my favourites on the album. Her voice, the music... it all just goes together so well

Don't apologize! Can you expand a little about why you don't like it?

I have this song 5 out of 5 because it is brilliant but, I never listen to it. It makes me so sad for some reasons. This song is great example of one her songs making me think about sad things. I always get so sad when I hear it, but thats how powerful it is I guess. Another reason why I love this album. I don't know why there is so much negativity about this song, I think its beautiful!

I really like the song, it's one of my favourites on the album. Whether Stevie has written the song or not is nothing I really care about. I either like it or not.

For the same reason I like "Docklands", I have no problems at all with the "laundromat"-line. To be honest, I couldn't care less whether Stevie would be using a word in her own songs or not. Perhaps that is even a good reason to sometimes sing other people's songs, because she's singing lyrics she'd never have written herself. But this is getting off-topic now.

It is the song I liked most immediately when I first listened to OSOTM, but now I like a few others better. I guess there isn't quite enough to it to keep me intrigued. But it is still simply pretty. I also listened to LB's version quite a bit, so I definitely got burned out on it.
It's fun to overdramatically sing (Stevie? no!). I also like yelling "Waaaance".
And of course "YOU CAN TRY BUT YOU CAN'T GET MEEEE...INTO THE FIIIIYAAAHHHH!"

The vocal is somewhat sweeping, epic - and it's a very mannered vocal, which is a fun thing about Stevie.
Yeah, I like it - I picked the top one.

I can't wait to get OSOTM on Vinyl. Mmmm, lush.

I don't like Laura Branigan's version AT ALL.

Me either - but have you heard Jude Johnstone's OWN version of the song? It blows both Stevie's and Laura's out of the water

Yeah, I like it - I picked the top one.
This song blows chunks. I picked the bottom one. IMO the worst song on TOSOTM.

I think her vocal is extremely disinterested. The song itself is really boring and the lyrics are hackneyed crap. You know a song is really, really awful when Laura Branigan chooses to record it. Why Stevie did, I'll never know. This one is in "Unconditional Love" territory- Stevie performing hack songwriter material.

Blech.

I like this song a lot, one of my favs from TOSOTM...and they're not very many of those! I like the lyrics and I especially like the vocal. I think the production works pretty well with this song. Probably one of the few songs I like that Stevie didn't actually write

I'd be a bit like Tower on this one.

It seems to go quite sluggishly for me, for some reason. It has its very high points [I love the line "baby I can't walk this wire"] but the rest is sort of boring for me. Sort of a been there done that type of mentality but I'm not sure why. The chorus in particular bugs me -- to me it seems to try and have a certain hard-hitting type of power that it just ... weeeelll ... doesn't.

As you can see I'm brilliant at articulating my opinions

I certainly can :D This version of "Cry Wolf" is so simple and unforced - its amazing, in fact the whole album is truly amazing! Jude is one incredible song writer...

Now if somebody could post Laura Branigan's version - I would be one happy camper!!!

Like it .... it's a "fun" song to me. Love the vocal and the sound. I don't seem to mind so much on this one that she didn't write it.

You're right, this is very simple and unforced. Not sure it's better, though. It could be more passionate.
I like the big vocal from Stevie. And the medium vocal from Laura.

Actually, out of all three I think Laura's hits the target best. She adds the most believable pathos to the song, IMO. It's not too much or too little. The porridge is just right. Not over or under sung. Etc.
I do like all three, though - thanks for posting. :woohoo:
