I never saw any of the concerts in person, but I was watching the videos of the Gold Dust tour that BTFLCHLD posted on youtube a couple weeks ago. The one thing that stuck out like a sore thumb, and felt completely inappropriate, was Jana's annoying high, sweet, pop idol voice. It clashes horribly with Stevie's, and almost ruined Gold Dust Woman and Landslide for me. I guess Stevie can harmonize with anyone, but not everyone can harmonize with Stevie.
Oh, and whatever happened to Lori?

Jana eats. But then, I think all her singers sound too shrill for her voice (Stevie's) now. I prefer her with Sheryl Crow, oddly. Or, you know, anyone else not so shrill.

I personally don't mind Jana, but I will admit I prefer Lori over her, any day.

There are parts in a version I recorded of "B&TB" from Jana in the Gold Dust Christchurch show that made me cringe...

I agree mostly, although I do like Sharon's voice. I just recently took on a bigger appreciation for Sharon when I started to really home in on her backing vocals on Sara from the Tusk demos and outtakes disc. I don't know why Sharon doesn't put out an album of her own. She has a very deep, soulful voice, that is really strong and unique. Sometimes, and on certain things, I think she sounds better than Stevie .

with respect to Jana, never liked her. she isn't horrible, just not a right fit, imo.

Jana's just another in the long list of talented Minnesota musicians.:)

I don't like her at all - I think she's shrill and makes me cringe and isn't a good fit for Stevie and FM. Hope Mindy comes back for 2007!

she has an incredible soprano 2 voice range. which is great for a woman. but sometimes i do think she overdid it on the tour, sometimes it seems like she is trying to overdo everyone else

another thing about Jana - the woman has a wide range in other ways. sometimes she opens her mouth and I swear it looks like she's going to swallow the microphone.
I ain't hatin' cause that's a talent in some ways...;)

Bring back Marilyn Martin!!!
(And I'm serious.)Now she was really cool. She sounded even cooler in person in the arena than on the crappy old tapes. I never cared about her as a lead vocalist, but her voice was perfect for backing up Stevie with her '83 style.
Also, I saw Marilyn on the country music channel about ten years ago. She was promoting some album & line-dancing & giving an interview. No mention of Stevie, however.
Another good howler was Carolyn Brooks, whom you can hear on the Dallas boot 9.05.83. Listen to "If Anyone Falls" ... the chorus.

They let Sharon solo!
The great thing about Sharon & to a lesser extent Lori is that, aside from the fact that both of them are such great friends of Stevie's, both of them really love the material they sing with Stevie; they think so highly of it. Whereas sometimes I get the impression with the later backup singers (Mindy, Jana, &c.) that they're just doing a gig--being paid well & just doing a job. They don't have that tight spiritual connection to Stevie & her history that Sharon & Lori do.

this is something I've always wondered. we know Stevie and other rock celebs make millions, but what's your guess a backup singer makes? are they paid a flat rate or what? how does that all work?

Do you have an mp3 of that, David?I have it on DVD but I don't know how to get it to MP3 .... although I should know by now, since Video Goddess has told me often enough times!

They're probably put on salary...and a retainer, meaning that they'd be at the artist's beck & call for a certain length of time after the tour, should there be additional shows after a tour has supposedly ended or if the artist decides to use the road band for subsequent studio work (i.e. "studio sweetening" of recorded shows for a live album, etc).

Jana just sings too loud. It wouldn't be so bad if she would just tone down the volume.
Does anyone know if Mindy is ever coming back?
