hold on for further deets...
EDIT: so this is my idea. why can't we have a fan convention once a year somewhere where there's lots to do and see. like make a weekend out of it. start things off on a Friday night and end on a Sunday morning. just an excuse for everyone to get together and gab, show pics, trade stuff, whatever. it like hit me about 30 minutes ago. I organized something similar in 1999 (refer to MidSouth Fan Party on the Nicksfix fan activities; yeah, all, what 6? showed up). anyway, if no one cares or is interested, ok, but if you are say so. and I'll see if I can get a more formal idea together. picture it, StevieStock 2006...damn that sounds sweet.

I really think this would be awesome. Fri-Sun may be a little much for some people now that I think about it, but Sat-Sun should be a good bet. as far as where, I was thinking somewhere like Dallas, Atlanta...there was another place discussed before but I can't remember where it was. I'm open for ideas. if nothing else, at least a group could get together to hang out for a couple days.

That place? Is Buffalo.
Seriously, I had mentioned before that it wouldn't be a bad place, as long as it's between June & September when it's almost guaranteed to be nice weather-wise. Plus, people could see Niagara Falls while they were here. And it's cheap to get here & stay here.
Chicago might be good - a tad bit more centrally located. How about Austin? I'd love to go there.
I'd be in if everything fell into place (money, time off, travel, etc.)

I would go and help with planning. It would be great to tack onto NOTS, but the cost might be too high for a lot of people.
Dallas and Atlanta are good ideas because they are airport hubs and hotels tend to be cheaper. Vegas is good because you can usually get a cheap flight there and hotel deals depending on time of year.

I haven't been to Vegas in a few years, so maybe it's different. It's a city that has a lot to do during non-convention time that doesn't require renting a car or taking a lot of cabs.
I'm very hesitant to see New Orleans again, but I think it's a good choice also.

amber
06-06-2006, 01:45 PM
There is a notable lack of west coast cities, but I voted Austin, as I have heard it is really cool. Second choice Atlanta, ditto reasons. Lets have it in a season where the giant southern man-eating bugs are at a minimum, though. Please? *shudder*.
It would be nice to have it in a good "walking around, lots of bars and food in a fairly concentrated place" city. Aren't Austin and Atlanta like that?
And Strand, I vote driving singing Stevie and classic rock, instead of show tunes. That way we can sing guitar parts, too! :wavey: :wavey:

^ Yeah, that's why I mentioned Austin. I thought that too.
I think the reason there are no West coast cities is that so far nobody's mentioned them in the thread. Jazzy posted the poll later.

I can't imagine having such a convention in any of these areas over the summer. The weather is intolerable. And such a convention would probably best take place during the summer, which seems to be when most people are out of school or able to take vacations from work, etc. Why would anyone from the West Coast, for example, want to go to Dallas TX or Atlanta GA in July or August, with its 105 degree temps & 80 to 90 percent humidity? What sort of vacation is that? A vacation for baby spiders, maybe, but not people.

Right. Clearly, if it's summer, it has to be in SF or LA. Actually, I like hot weather, because you can still be scantily clad late at night. When you're bar hopping.

right. I was thinking fallish or springish cause I am b-r-o-k-e right now anyway from NYC. and, as Paula pointed out, I just took a general consensus of options for locations from those who had posted. I'm thinking once we get a few locations selected, we'll have a vote for where and when.
such as:
Boston, summer 07
Boston, spring 07
Boston, fall 06
Austin, summer 07
Austin, spring 07
Austin, fall 06
we'll see how it goes. it may be that we just say, hey, if you can make it to Atlanta on November 1-3, be there, we'll all be staying at X.

March would be fun because it's the general beginning of tornado season. Supercell thunderstorm activity adds electricity to an event, an excitement hard to pinpoint, a crackle to the air, pregnant with possibilities.
I vote for:
1. Prescott AZ
2. Taos NM
3. Pacific Grove/Monterey CA
4. Olympia WA
5. Sand Point ID
6. Cape Cod MA
