This may seem like a really inane request, but I've become addicted to the song "How Still My Love" and am particularly interested in live versions where the "Whoaaa, it's me that's talkin' to ya" after the bridge is particularly fierce. I already have some decent ones (including a SA one and a good RAL one that's 9:27 long--unfortunately I don't have what show it's from), and Youtube has (had?) the kickass one from the US Festival, I'd have to say my all-time favorite is one from the Wild Heart Tour-- it's 7:38 long, her voice is in a great place between WH and RAL, and she just rips it (the song AND her voice) to shreds... it's the one that was posted back in March, I think, where we all kept marvelling at how chatty she was for the first few minutes of the track.

So does anyone have any other really good versions of HSML? If not, a decent quality recording of my above favorite will suffice!

You might still have it somewhere.

i think that's the one i'm referring to as my favorite. the only thing i don't like about it is the sound quality-- it's distant and muffled, and i can't crank it up in my car because it's so low!

Maybe someday something excellent from that night will surface.

Other better-quality recordings you might be interested in for good howling on HSML are:

1. Bristol CT 9.09.83
2. Tempe AZ 9.25.83
3. Buffalo NY 7.02.83
4. Charlotte NC 11.23.83
5. Cincinnati OH 7.30.83
6. Dallas TX 9.05.83

In general, the farther you get toward the end of the tour, the better the HSMLs got for howling.

bless you for asking this.

the 9:27 is from Austin, TX 4.12.86

my personal favorites:
HSML, Cloak and Dagger cd
HSML, Jones Beach (not sure of date)
HSML, Wantaugh, NY (not sure of date)
HSML, Weedsport, NY (9.6.86)

and although not exactly a favorite, Dallas, TX (4.15.86) has some of the best vocals ever of the RAL tour - especially around 2:34 (the "you go your way" part...ahhh - breathtaking) and listen to the vamping at the end

I've become addicted to the song "How Still My Love" You are not alone with that, my friend. I feel in love with this song from the very beginning and to see her perform said song this past tour was well beyond my wildest dreams. How Still My Love is my all-time favorite song for a bubblebath.

weedsport was june 7th, no?I have a date of June 20 for Weedsport, plus a possible 2nd show August 15. I don't know whether there actually was a 2nd show, & if so, whether the radio show was the June show or the August show.

For June 7, 8 & 9, I have Jones Beach in Wantaugh NY.

I always get this song stuck in my head after I listen to it - have loved it from the very 1st time I ever heard it. I just watched the US Festival last weekend and kept hearing it for a few days afterwards - she really howled during that version but I agree with David, the Inglewood version kicks major tail, wish quality was a little better, I need to get a CD made of that entire concert somehow!

can anybody put this up for download? it seems to be a beloved favorite. It's just an ordinary "How Still My Love" from 1986. People seem to be nuts about it only because it's probably the most widely circulated HSML from that year. But it makes sense that people are nuts about what they've heard (you can't be nuts about what you haven't heard).

By the way, it's actually from Poplar Creek June 21, 1986. The bootleggers gave it a weird name redolent of movie thrillers & espionage.

A bunch of "How Still My Love" performances from 1986 (not the best year for the song) outrank this one for energy/passion, like Madison Square Garden 8.05.86 & Jones Beach 6.08.86.

If nobody posts the Poplar Creek one by tonight when I get back, I will.

How would you rate the 4/15/86 How Still My Love amongst How Still My Love's that tour. I personally think those RAL HSML's are far superior to the WH HSML's. Of course the only HSML's i've heard from that tour are US Festival and the show Tom Petty was at none of the others.

oh YES HSML
Wantaugh is my FAVE version of the handful I have heard.
and i agree with the HSMLs being the best on the RAL tour...they can't compare with any other incarnation, but one or 2 versions from the Vegas shows were pretty good. But I don't think even they were anywhere near as good as anything on the RAL tour

How would you rate the 4/15/86 How Still My Love amongst How Still My Love's that tour.I love it & I think it's well above average for that tour. It certainly beats the Weedsport radio show version as well as the versions I have from Worcester, Alpine Valley, Poplar Creek, Holmdel, Clarkston, Costa Mesa, Mountain View, etc. By the way, I also think the "Rhiannon" piano-&-vocal from 4.12.86 (a few days before) is one of the absolute best from that whole tour for the sustained upper-register melodic arc that occurs at the 2:22-2:25 mark.
I personally think those RAL HSML's are far superior to the WH HSML's.Well, I certainly bow to no one as an idolater of the Rock a Little tour. But there was a definite difference in the power & style of the voice from one tour to the next, the differences of which created strengths on each tour. For example, I think "Outside the Rain" on the RAL tour was superior in general to it on the WH tour, but I think HSML on the WH tour was superior in general to it on the RAL tour. There were all sorts of different tradeoffs in power & effect between the two tours that I'd love to analyze with you or others all day. Stevie's gin-soaked vocals on the RAL tour were terrifically exciting to me in general, but she definitely did not have the ability that year to sustain a howl in the upper registers this way:

http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=A88CBB7E43DACA01

And in 1986, often, when she did try to do this, all she could do was just emit a gutteral sort of Mercedes McCambridgelike growl, like an "Exorcist" vocal outtake, or sometimes just go silent entirely. It was definitely a physical or technical difference from one tour to the next: the voice had lost some of its upper range as well as a certain amount of solid projection. A change in technique like that also creates a change in style, too, & sure enough, HSML on the earlier tour had a stateliness that the version on the later tour didn't have: the '86 performances sort of drove forward like a steamroller more. Of course, when you're sitting in an arena listening to a performance, a lot depends on the band, & in 1986 the band wasn't as clean as it was in 1983; Marotta was a "dirtier" drummer than Kunkel, & I think in many ways his style didn't suitably complement Stevie's vocal effect that year. At the San Diego Sports Arena, for example, I remember her vocal mix & the drum mix basically fighting it out for preeminence in this arena, where sound waves ricocheted off walls with bad echo. So her singing on that date essentially had no choice but to turn into a sort of sludgy, tube guitar amp wall of noize. You're familiar with that constant tintinabulatory ringing in your ears after a rock concert? (You can hear it best when you go home & try to sleep.) Well, that's what Stevie's singing sounded like DURING the performance.
Of course the only HSML's i've heard from that tour are US Festival and the show Tom Petty was at none of the others. There must be thirty or forty of them out there on audio or video. Again, I prefer the ones on the last leg of the tour (roughly, october & november).
