I'm just listening to Lola now. You're right. It doesn't sound like the same show. This is what the person that uploaded this had to say about it:
'The CD's I have from Gary actually have what sounds like several concerts. They do have the entire Alabama show on them. There are about 24 different songs.'
He is going to upload the second batch on April 7. Maybe the rest of the Tuscaloosa show will be in there then. :)

I never knew that NGBA was written in '74. I always thought it was written between the eponymous FM album and Rumours.

Yeah, I was discussing this with someone earlier. NGBA is only an instrumental at this concert, maybe he added the lyrics later on? And also, it was said that during one of the OOTC concerts he mentioned that NGBA was about overcoming depressions, and never going back to that. Who knows right? I always assumed it was entirely about Stevie also.

Also, the track entitled "Circles in Time"...Could this have been a track targeted for the rumored 2nd Buckingham/Nicks cd?
Now, If I can just locate a copy of the also rumored Buckingham/Nicks that was recorded by video cameras (If this show does exist, as I have heard, then someone is making sure it will not be put into circulation)

I don't recall where I heard or read this, but I believe Mr. Buckingham or someone else is on record as saying that "Never Going Back Again" is not about Stevie at all, but about some woman that LB had a brief fling with somewhere along the line.
Can anyone confirm or deny this? I've got no recollection at all as to the source of that story.
On a bit of detective work looking at the site it's from, we reckon we might have either Gary Hodges or even Bob Welch to thank for these.
My guess would be Hodges, since he worked so closely with Lindsey and Stevie at the time.
"Hodges is well known to Fleetwood Mac fans primarily through his work with the fledgling Los Angeles duo of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks on the by-now-mythic Buckingham Nicks album, recorded and released in 1973 on the Polydor label. Hodges, who used the nickname "Hoppy" on the album gatefold, played drums and percussion on the sought-after album, the first for Buckingham and Nicks, and a notorious commercial failure at the time, two years before the hapless duo's fortunes changed and they were asked to join Fleetwood Mac."
Thanks so much for sharing these songs. They're pretty damn good!

In the Rumours documentary, he said that. I certainly assumed that meant it was written after he and Stevie broke up! Now I don't know what to think.

Lindsey often writes instrumentals, then puts words to them later. Remember this was originally "Brushes" when it came to the Mac during the Rumours era. He apparently shelved it after BN broke up, then brought it back out after he broke up with Stevie and added the words about the woman who "put the wind back into [his] sails" - directing them towards Stevie as a "nah-nah."

It must be because La Nicks refers to she knows she has never seen so many people before.
Also, her high harmony on MM is a delight to hear - but the song is so much slower than the FM version.
Finallt, I thought LB said he wrote NGB after the break up? If so, how can it be here?
In the Rumours documentary, he said that. I certainly assumed that meant it was written after he and Stevie broke up! Now I don't know what to think.
Thanks! I thought it was some video interview or other.
As for when the words were written, '76 is a good bet. The track labeled here as "Never Going Back Again" is an instrumental piece, is it not?

I wondered about that too, and googled the lyrics. Nothing came up - so either it's a very obscure song, or Lindsey wrote it. I say Lindsey because it follows his repetitive lyrical and chord structure and is very similar to Monday Morning in the content and theme.

I was tickled to see that the site is called "Until We Have Faces" because that is a C.S. Lewis book (well, it is "Till" not "Until") that reminds me of the Buckingham Nicks relationship.
It is purely a coincidence, I am sure , because this gentlemen named the band without reference to Buckingham Nicks, but I got a kick out of it.

I think I may need help recovering from "Crystal." How wonderful that it didn't become a Fleetwood Mac staple; I can't imagine a song performed as beautifully as it was at this show becoming a rote excuse for the Fleetwood Mac Theater Troupe to ham it up for the buzzed arena audiences of the twenty-first century. It's so rough and lush, blood-tingling and charismatic. Almost titillating in a way. Lindsey sounds so natural and unforced, a completely different performer.
"Rhiannon" was a much better song in this incarnation. Even puts those mid-seventies versions to shame. Simple, slightly dishevelled, with her choppy, craggy little voice spitting out the lyrics ferociously instead of trying to vamp it all up in an attempt to add atmosphere that the song already inherently has. And the music chugs along like a boxcar picking up speed on the tracks. Awesome.

I see you coming around
Making circles in time
I try to let you down
You keep standing in line
I make up, break up, yeah
You're the one
All the young men must be great
I make up, break up, yeah
You're the devil's chamber maid
I see you coming around
Making circles in time
I try to let you down
You keep standing in line
I make up, break up, yeah
You're the one
All the young men must be great
I make up, break up, yeah
You're the devil's chamber maid
So, this is what I came up with for lyrics, but the quality is not that clear that I can make it out exactly. I'm not sure whether he repeats 'break up, break up' or indeed says 'make up, break up' (or even OUT instead of UP?) and whether he does the same thing twice, and the line 'all the young men must be great' I can hardly understand, so that's a big guess. The second time it almost sounds like he is saying 'all the young men masturbate'.
Anyone else have any input?

April 1, 2006: a date which will be remembered and celebrated. I don’t go to the BuckinghamNicks forum regularly anymore, but those lucky folks got a day’s headstart on these!
Looking around the internet, I see that it looks like only four live performances from Buckingham Nicks have been available before now. Lola (My Love), Rhiannon, Races Are Run, and Django/Sorcerer. Is this correct?
For those who like dates, this website (http://db.etree.org/bs_d.php?artist_key=10542) says the Tuscaloosa date at the University of Alabama happened on 6-1-1974. But it sounds like people are thinking these new tracks are from a different concert.

Yep, and they only emerged about two years ago. I remember how excited we all were with those tracks.
This appears to be an entirely new concert!
Talking sources and such: The transition from "Monday Morning" to "Never Going Back Again" sure makes it seem like they might be the same show, but the first three files are ripped at 128 kbps, while the rest are all 320, though there doesn't seem to be much of an increase in quality, if any at all. Well, AJ did mention that Gary sent some tracks over on cd, it could be that they are all mixed up on the cd to begin with. But what we now have, including the 4 *very clear* (isn't that strange?) tracks that we already had, are definitely from two, if not three, different shows. Maybe we can piece some things together once we get the second batch on April 7. :)

But it sounds like people are thinking these new tracks are from a different concert.
These are incredible - I can't even believe I'm hearing them actually
I listened to the other four tracks to compare and to my ear they don't seem to be from that show in Tuscalosa... I could be wrong. Anyone else do any comparing?
Thanks Nancy for providing an outlet for AJ and ultimately Gary...

No I don't think these are the same. And was it ever verified that the other ones were from that last show in Tuscaloosa?
So what do we know about the live BN shows? Do we know any dates or even how many there were?

OK, I have dial-up and it will take me forever and a day to download all of these.:( Is there anyone out there that can burn them to a CD for me? I think that would end up being faster. I have a ton of stuff to trade including DVDs, yes DVDS!

This is seriously like the greatest thing EVER. This is probably when you think about it, better then getting a new album, a new tour, anything. I can't freaking believe we now have Crystal and LONG DISTANCE WINNER live. Plus a never before heard BN song, plus the only live frozen love we had was the crappy sounding Fleetwood Mac one. Its really the treasure of all treasures. Like Patti I have dial up, so it'll be awhiule before i hear em all, but I went right for Long Distance Winner, since im disbelief i get to hear it live. Im suprised how different it is from the studio version, its kind of slowed down, adn the guitar is much different, the ending absolutley Blows me away with the "I TRIED TO WIN AND I LOST AGAIN" so now im just gonna download in order, Im halfway through Lola.

These made my year so far. Thanks to all involved!
I'm curious about all the secrecy, tho. It's not like Stevie & Lindsey really care, or are working on a 3-disc box set of the album as one disc (plus the single versions as extra tracks), the Coffee Plant and other demos as the second, and a third disc compiling the best of these soundbard live shows - plus an extensive book with pictures, lyrics, studio notes, and special written recollections of this this from each of their perspectives.
Or maybe, just maybe they really *are* doing that, and have just leaked these to gauge the interest.
I am something of a dreamer...

These are amazing... it's like finding the Holy Grail (only better!). The energy level is amazing -- the youthful exuberance is palpable. "Frozen Love" is KILLER. Wow. Wow. WOW.
I'm glad "Rhiannon" became what it did with Fleetwood Mac though... both this version and the Tuscaloosa version that leaked last year, sound ultra-rushed. They plow through it, rather than letting it ebb and flow.
(I would like to hear them do a tighter version of it on the next tour though... something no longer than 4 minutes and closer to the studio version in mood.)
Thanks to AJ for making these available to us!

Hm, I'm pretty sure these tracks are from the shows they did in 1975, when they were already signed with Fleetwood Mac but were allowed to do these last shows in Alabama as an indulgence.
If you guys have the 1992 fan convention program, there's an article in it from a paper called Birmingham After Dark by the staff writer Jan Susina, published in February 1975. The article was written right after the last Buckingham Nicks concert in Birmingham (it was on a Friday) at the Birmingham Municipal Auditorium. Sorry but date is not given. It was probably some Friday in January.
"Back in L.A., the two will begin work, not as the Buckingham Nicks, but as members of Fleetwood Mac, later this month."
The rest of the band was Tom Moncrieff, Hoppy Hodges (Gary) & Waddy Wachtel. Stevie & Lindsey told the press at this point that, sooner or later, Buckingham Nicks was going to get back together: "The Buckingham Nicks thing -- me & Lindsey -- have been together eight years with the people we're playing with, Tom & Hoppy. As soon as Buckingham Nicks go back together, they'll come too."

What? It just seemed like a coincidence that the article would be reprinted recently (because the poster on the other board said it was recent) and then have these songs released shortly after. Maybe it's not PR. It was just a speculation. :wavey:

Ohhh...okay...I didn't understand.
No, actually, this article was reprinted in 1992 in a commemorative program for a Fleetwood Mac fan convention that took place in Texas. Fleetwood Mac fans just keep a bunch of old articles archived in places like the Blue Letter Archives. The articles don't re-run; they're just in storage for fans to consult.

mmm...let me try to clarify...this is what the site has listed:
BuckinghamNicks Shows
Song Tracks 1 of 2 (2nd batch posted 4/7/06)
Lola
stage talk - power failure
Monday Morning
Never Going Back Again
Races Are Run
Rhiannon
Long Distance Winner
Django (*mis-labled)
Circles in Time
Don't Let Me Down Again
Frozen Love
Crystal Encore
Django is listed (track #8) however, after listening a few times 'lady from the mountain' (aka sorcerer) kicks in right around 1:28 so we're getting 2 tracks instead of one!!!

Well, I think Stevie has always identified with Balkan peasants. Being a nomad and all, I mean, she can't feel bad about the way she is, can she David? And this just proves she's always seen her gypsy, way back in 1974, way before we ever knew that she had. I'll bet the Balkan peasants pictured face freedom with a littlebitof fear. Stevie has no fear though, my dear sweet David. :xoxo: She has only love.
And I personally find it extraordinary that she gave a shout out to them because my dad always told me stories about the gypsies when I was little. But I never beleived they were real. Until Stevie told me they were. Then I believed. Oh, plus when I went to Bulgaria in 1998 I saw a gypsy man rip a necklace right off a woman's throat & run. They caught him though. That gypsy had no love. :(

Say, Paula, why has there never been a movie called "Romany"? I picture an epic called "Romany" detailing the rich & troubled history of the gypsy peoples of the old Byzantine Empire comprising the Balkan, Slavic & Mid-Eastern countries, carrying their letters of protection from the King of Hungary & the facing hostilities from host nations, speaking their Rom languages & practicing their marvelous customs & music.
I wish Abel Gance or Orson Welles had made such a film, filled with romance, tragedy & epic scope.

Not exactly what you are looking for, and I am also not Paula, and it is also off thread topic, but have you ever seen "Latcho Drom"
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/6304263198/002-7697354-8683268?v=glance&n=404272
This majestic, French-made film wishes viewers a "latcho drom"--a safe journey--as it follows the roots of the Rom, traveling people better known as Gypsies. Stunning and evocative, it transcends language and culture, bringing together the best elements of National Geographic-style documentary and music video in a kind of anthropological MTV. Using only music and image, without any steady characters or plot, award-winning director Tony Gatlif (himself of Rom descent) tells a compelling story of Rom migrations from Northern India to Europe and the rest of the world. Beginning with a gathering of lavishly dressed nomads singing across the harsh deserts of Rajasthan, viewers are transported through the lush oases of Egypt into the ghettoes of Turkey, from the muddy lanes of Eastern Europe through lush French fields to the windswept coastal cities of Spain. Every step of the way, there are hypnotic reminders of the harshness and beauty of the Rom lifestyle: the rhythms of labor pounding into vibrant dance, the songs of Turkish flower sellers merging with the plaintive political satires of a gray-haired Romanian violinist. Music is everywhere--children barely able to walk dance alongside great-grandmothers--and covers all styles and subjects--from the wintry strains of an Auschwitz lament to a flamenco devotional in a Spanish shrine to a festive Dixieland number that borrows as much from New Orleans as from northern India. And wordless stories abound, told in the smiles of strangers waiting for a train or in the frowns of rifle-toting farmers come to evict travelers from their land. --Grant Balfour

Pfffff! Love it.
Am I wrong, or were lots of stop starts on this setlist? You can tell they weren't polished yet, Stevie doesn't sound totally confident in her voice and Lindsey's guitar playing is not as fluid as it was to become (obviously).
I know someone else posted this earlier but I was really disapointed that Stevie didn't sing her part on Frozen Love! Kinda takes the drama and intensity out of the song, plus I just flat love to hear Stevie sing so I felt a bit robbed
My favorite in the set I think, is Lola! Isn't that crazy? I think that song just rocks and whoever is on that bass is a total badass imo. Their band was really f'ing good!
Crystal was nice. Stevie's vocal additions at the end are cool and the band really pumps it up hitting a nice crescendo-like high that sounds downright thunderous.
There's a part II coming right?

Yes, tomorrow A.J. is supposed to post more. On Buckinghamnicks.net I believe he said most are just different version of the same tunes, but there are a few different ones.
I agree about Lola - and I am not a fan of the album version! Crystal is really getting me too, mainly the ending with the hard guitar & her yell.
And you can definitely tell they were beginners here. A bit off key here & there, false starts... I don't mind it though, a nice change from the usual more recent 'going through the motions' shows.

I know! When I listen to it I think to myself, noone knew who these people were yet! It's like listening to a little piece of history in the making, especially after hearing Stevie say, "we've never seen this many people here before!" You can tell they were truly blown away by the turn-out and just think what they were ABOUT to experience later in Fleetwood Mac! it's so cool.
Yeah, I don't really like the album version of Lola all that much either, but the live version is punchy! Great performances on both their parts.

Awesome.
You have a real talent for describing movies, music whatever. Your word choices floor me. I predict one day you will be paid handsomely for it.
These songs are all so wonderful. It is like a dream come true, you know? Well, you do know! Bless your hearts. I am so excited! I can't believe its taken me this long to see this thread. I've been neglecting the poor Stevie forum.

Hey Paula - Sorcerer is in this batch too! It is part of the track for Django, so don't miss it.
I'm so digging this stuff. I've probably listened to this whole show about 8 times this week and Crystal alone about 20. How can those two (S&L) not realize there is a demand for this and at least release Buckingham Nicks on CD? Remember after The Dance they said they would be releasing it soon. Liars, the whole lot of them. :p
And I couldn't agree more about how cool it is to hear them unpolished and raw. I think one of the best shows I saw on the SYW tour was opening night of the second leg in Madison where they flubbed Big Love and Say Goodbye. My God! Spontaneity!!

Actually, it's kind of a hybrid, but if I had to say one, I'd say Chain.
Anyway, how rad is the end of this Sorcerer? :blob2: "ayeah-ayeah-ayeah-ayeaaahhhhhhh!!!" preceded by that monumental scrawching of "MOOOOUUUUUUNTTAYN!" (It's like "screech" but not as high pitched). I love it.
The rest of the song I don't like quite as well as the other BN Sorcerer I have (it's still great), but starting on the back and forth b/t L and S at the ending, this one is much more amazing.

Yeah, I have it, but AJ posted on BN.net that the next batch is all repeats except I Don't Wanna Know and Sorcerer, so I thought maybe Sorcerer was one of the original 4 tunes that had leaked last year & I forgot about it. Maybe he meant there's another different song coming, but said it was Sorcerer by mistake?
Really? I thought it was "is she coming out of there?" or something. OK. I stand corrected.
It's obvious that he isn't saying that! Consider the context: they had a power failure early in the show. There were obvious sound problems. He started playing the song -- then stopped because he wasn't sure if the amplification was right, thus "Is it coming out of there?"
Where would Stevie be coming out of? This wasn't a huge Fleetwood Mac show where Stevie could get away with leaving the stage for entire songs and retreat to a backstage tent. For sure, she was probably on stage for the entire concert.

Wow. Didn't mean to upset you so much by mishearing something on a 30-something year old bootleg recording. Thanks for clarifying what was said...again.

I was looking around the Until We Have Faces website to see if I could find the other batch and I came across this in the news.
"02/09/06 Drummer Gary Hodges is in the studio reuniting with old friends to rerecord BuckinghamNicks tracks. "
What could this mean?

Very cool. Maybe it's Lindsey and Stevie (I think it would be silly if they did BN with out them lol) finally giving us some of these songs on CD! If they're re-recorded then they could put some cool new spins on those songs.

Wow - nice catch!
I especially love the "old friends" parts.
I suppose it's possible he's working with someone (besides S&L) who are covering the songs. Or, they're finally getting BuckinghamNicks ready for CD by recreating missing/damaged tracks.
If it's S&L, I hope they're just recreating and not completely rerecording/reinterpreting the songs. They can do that on their world tour supporting the album.

isn't it amazing that this has surfaced after so many years?
it makes me think Fleetwood Mac could really do some digging and release a series of stuff like this - sort of how the Grateful Dead (and Pearl Jam) have been doing it.
Once you get into the recent tours, it's a little boring because we all know the set lists - but this early stuff is fantastic.
The sound quality is not half-bad given it's age and tape condition.
I'll be curious to hear when the source is revealed.
Whoever gave us this - THANK YOU!

p.s. -
I don't think the instrumental track is Never Going Back Again.
It obviously sounds like it eventually ended up close to NGBA but at the time,
I bet he called it something else.

See, When I burned the tracks to disc, I was in a hurry & didn't do it in order, so my "power outtage" isn't before "Frozen Love" on my CD, and I didn't put 2 & 2 together. It makes total sense now.

I wondered that too. Probably talking about the Sorcerer that came along a while ago with Rhiannon, Races Are Run and Lola, from a different BN show.

Where is this Sorcerer? I can't find it!
It is attached to "Django" - LB does the intro right into "Sorcerer". And it does sound different than the other live one, I think.
GREAT ending!

I hear ya...everytime Django would come on I would always skip over it cause I don't like it all that much. After I dl the show, I had listened to the cd like 20 times and then decided to "grin & bear it" and just listen to the song. I almost crapped myself when I heard Sorcerer start. The track list on "Untill We Have Faces" didn't have it listed. I thought it was a nice suprise to see it was on there!!! :] :blob2: :D

I don't think so. Apparently, he said they may be from a few different shows, but I think all from '74?

I don't know for sure. That's why I put the "?" in there David.
How many Alabama shows were there, and did they all take place after they joined Mac? I guess we could pinpoint a date that way. Of course, I don't know if we know for sure that these songs are are all from Alabama shows, somethey could also be from other older shows. We may never know. Ah, I love a mystery. :p

My question is: How many people is "this many people"?
Were the venues small in Alabama where they played?
It really sounded as if they were doing one of their last shows based upon the comments that LB made in the beginning of the show - i.e. "It really means alot to us . . ." like they had a large group at the concert because it was the end of BN and they knew they were going with the Mac. JMO.

I think I read somewhere that there were like 5,000 people at one of the alabama shows.

How funny is it that we have waited over 30 years to hear some live Buckingham Nicks (besides the 4 tracks from before) and now we can't hold out for a few days for the next tracks. I'm sure I would have done a lot more at work today instead of checking every few minutes to see if they showed up yet

After listening to all the tracks now a few times, I have to say that next to Long Distance Winner the best song is Circles in Time. This is one awseome new track (well really old I guess but never heard none the less). I like it better then Monday Morning, Never Going Back Again, Second Hand News and pretty much all his BuckinghamNicks songs. the harmonies on this are just great, specifically around 1:26 to 1:28.

The one at Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center had a few thousand people, not quite 5,000 (Mick's the one that said this, in his book, which also said Bella Donna sold ten million copies... not quite). The show we're hearing here is not that one.
They played all over Alabama... Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Jacksonville... in that period between the release of their album and joining FM. The album was huge here. I own a few copies because in the days before eBay it was actually easy to find in Alabama because it sold so well here.
Stevie tells the story about the 'Bama concerts every time she comes here, most poignantly in the '03 Say You Will concert at BJCC, the site of BN's last show before joining FM and the one that drew the big crowd. She dedicated "Landslide" in the '03 show to the whole city of B'ham and thanked them for their decades of support for her and Lindsey.
