Ok, so I just watched this clip and I counted 22 twirls. 22. That's in a 5" heel and stoned on coke. After 6 twirls for me, I fall over and feel sick  What's her secret?

Woow! That's incredible.
Is it just me or do her legs look like little matchsticks in this?

Oh yes, how presumptuous of me  Stoned or not, how does she do it and not fall over. Are her eyes open or closed? What I do notice is that she keeps her head straight, and only turns her body until its about 3/4 around and then turns her head. Does that make sense? (and no, I haven't been drinking. yet.)

(and no, I haven't been drinking. yet.)Yes, that's what she does. She keeps her head in position whilst the body rotates, & then swings the head around to catch up to the body--sort of ballet inspired.
I think she vomits afterward. She stayed trim & svelte in those days, probably from vomiting owing to dizziness/vertigo experienced during "World Turning."
Now she does the long twirl again on "World Turning" on Midnight Special, only this time her skirt flies up & you can see hair. At least that's what people tell me who use freeze frame. As Dame Edna says, "...hair so long you can sit on!"

Ballet. That's it. That's what I was trying to describe. Have you tried it David. How many spins can you do?

In another thread someone mentioned that it is a special ballet trick so you won't get dizzy or nauseous. Since I suffer from the worst bouts of motion sickness, I've tried it and it really works.

Ballet. That's it. That's what I was trying to describe. Have you tried it David. How many spins can you do?Nah, I can't spin around. I have inner-ear problems & vertigo.
Sometimes, even, when I'm in the shower & I bend forward to wash my knees, I pass out right under the water. I'm out for 45 seconds to 90 seconds or so.
My gastroenterologist started me on Nexium this morning.

Yep, it's called "spotting." :) You pick a place on a wall or something in front of you and try to keep your eyes focused on it. Then you turn your body as far as you can and whip your head around at the last second and try to find that spot again.

No actually though, I agree, she's amazing. But it reminds me of a line from the movie "Lawrence of Arabia" - Lawrence puts his hand over a candle flame and holds it there, and this other guy asks him, "Doesn't it HURT?" He answers,
"Of COURSE it hurts - the TRICK is, not MINDING that it hurts!"
So - of COURSE Stevie gets dizzy - the trick is, not MINDING that she gets dizzy!

I think maybe she uses the mike. She starts "tracking" it one or two turns before she has to grab it. "Clever girl," as they say!

I love when they start singing "Put your head on my shoulder..." Stevie's voice was so adorable. The way she said "Shimey" (sp?).

Yeup, it's called spotting. All dancers, baton twirlers, flag twirlers.. etc. Use it. :)

Ok, so I tried twirling (ballet style) and I made it to 7 spins and I lost my balance and fell over and hit my head on the granite counter top on the island and split my head open and got a mild concussion and wound up in the hospital for the nite (you should never try this while intoxicated).

To me, what is so "How the hell does she do that?!" about that clip is how she immediatley sings the harmony to the Anka hit Put Your Head on my Shoulder.

Everybody beat me to the "spotting" description, but yes, that's it. In Belly Dancing, there are a lot of spin moves, and acquiring that knowledge young kept me from a lot of injuries. lol

To me the most amazing thing about her turns and dancing onstage is that she is able to do it in those platforms!
I am fascinated with spinning and whirling in dancing, and I can only do it a little, without getting too dizzy. I have watched ballet dancers and baton twirlers use that "spotting" trick. If you have never seen ecstatic Sufi dancers (I don't think they use that "spotting" trick) you should look at the amazing dervish twirls:
