I thought after the Sable on Blond appreciation thread was made, I'd make a appreciation thread for a good Stevie song ;)

If somebody held a gun to my head and MADE me decide what Stevie solo song was the very best, I think I would go with BATB.

Everything about this song is perfection

This song makes me really emotional - the notes she hits and the heartbreaking lyrics are a lethal combo

Let me know your thoughts....

My love, is a man, who's not been tamed

I just love that line. I love everything about the song.

I was one of the lucky ones to see Stevie sing it in Vegas, and I was in tears.

This is one of my alltime favorite songs live. And as Amber pointed out in another thread, there doesn't seem to be a bad live version of it.

I love, "...well, at least I'm <i>trying</i> to change..."

Edited to Add- this song got me through some very hard times many years ago.

oh I just don't have the energy to explain how much I love this song. it is magic; from the music to the lyrics to her vocals, it is wonderful.

and I'm with Jannie...my favorite line is "well at least I'm trying to change" and I also like "we come from different worlds but we are the same"

Love this one, too -- a constant in my top 10 Stevie solo songs.

Favorite lines: "Timeless is the creature who is wise, and timeless is the prisoner in disguise." And of course, "my love is a man who's not been tamed."

I love the "Would you die of grieving when I leave?" followed later by "I would fall in your shadow, I believe." (*gets chills just thinking about it*)

I can literally FEEL her words when she sings Beauty. Studio or live, it can still give me the chills after all this time. The string arrangment is what makes it, IMO. Not so much a fan of the "blues" demo (or outtake or whatever it is) - not that that version is bad or anything, but I much prefer the released one. So much emotion.

I will never forget that first night in Vegas last year that Theresa mentioned. Spellbinding. No exaggeration, it was that good. Breathtaking. I'll have to post my clip of the Wednesday performance again soon.

Oh, I have much, much love for Beauty and the Beast. Any version, really, because it's always tinted with a lot of emotions. I can't even begin to explain how much the line 'My love is a man who's not been tamed' applies to me.

Sigh.

When I first played the Wild Heart album & got to Beauty & Beast, I think I liked it right away. Plus, I was surprised at what I was hearing because it was unlike anything Stevie had ever recorded up to that point. It was like those epic arrangements Buckmaster used to do in the early '70s for Elton John--songs like "Indian Sunset" & "Curtains."

It's a shame, in a way, that she has never since done another epic string song with Paul.

Well, I don't know if I'd go that far...but yeah! It was not quite as good atmosphere-wise the second night (Tues was total silence, everyone in awe. Wed had more yelling & "woohoo's") but her vocal was kickass. I will try to get it up for you guys later today.

I always liked the song, but I started loving it when I heard it live. :D It is such a beautiful song and she sings it with such emotion. I love the demo that is 18 min long or something like that where she explains how she just saw the movie and when it came out she was going to buy it and she didn't care how much it was going to cost her.

I think she knocked it out of the park this past tour. Her vocals sound amazing, the video in the backround, the dress, the candles on the piano.....is there anyway we can get her to tour this summer??

My favorite lyrics were already mentioned...."Would you die of grieving when I leave??" and "or at least I'm trying to change..."

F*ck, that was a good nite! I just got chills again! You literally could hear a pin drop that first nite. Spellbinding is a perfect word. Then back at the hotel, Amber and you and I watched it on your camera screen sitting on the nite table, oh my god, good times!

Here it is. I just uploaded it, so it may be a few minutes until it's working. This is from Wednesday 5/11/05 in Las Vegas, the second of the 4 shows.

Again, nothing could capture the magic of opening night, but I'm actually happy that I wasn't fumbling around with my camera & that I was just able to take it all in. The second night was another story.

You know, it could be just me, but I almost find it rude when people are screaming things at her when she sings this. We all love Stevie and wish to express it, heck I could shout it from a mountain, but when I watch this I cringe when I hear people screaming during it.

I love that Paula. Wed was fabulous but nothing will ever compare to BATB from Tuesday night. It really was spellbinding...not a peep from the crowd...it was nuts, but you could hear a pin drop. No F-tards yelling "sing it for me, Stevie". The whole experience was surreal, watching her singing that again, the way she looked coming down the ramp with her hair up.....sigh. It was worth making the trip for that alone.

I adore BaTB...always have. The album version is beautiful but the live versions are equally stellar. My favorite live version is Wild Heart and Vegas...

Favorite lines

"an old child, misunderstood, out of time"
"my love is a man, whos not been tamed"
"My darling, lives in a world and it is not mine, we come from different worlds but we are the same"

I have much love for this song.

Im so pleased that everybody loves this - but I knew you all would, Stevie could sing out of her ass and we would love it

Anyway, my fav line is:

Oh who is the beauty...who the beast
Would you die of grieving when I leave

The way Stevie sings die is just heartbreaking :(

I LOVE the song and think the Vegas performaces were amongst the best things she has ever done- in fact, it shocked me and my posse shiitteless that she could still sing like that even with her new lower voice

One of my fav. lines from the song is:

an old child, misunderstood, and out of time - timeless is the creature who is wise - and so very timeless is the prisoner in disguise

That line, as as the song and interestingly enough her song "Twisted" - pretty well sums up my last relationship, which lasted on towards ten years. My 15 years older than I former partner seemingly was out of time (though they are still around bleesed be to God) and I was the prisoner in disguise (usually with a smile)

I swear that chick can turn a phrase

Also, Paula - thanks for that video. I am unsure if I knew it was you who took it and since May 05 - it has provided hours of enjoyment and has converted more than one innocent in my house into a Nicksian SOB

OH. MY. EFFIN. GOD.
I saw this on Saturday in Vegas but the shitty part is I don't remember. I mean I remember being there but I don't remember her singing this specifically because I think I was so entranced not to mention I was standing directly in front of her sandwiched between two very large women and could barely breathe. I have a video of my show which I've watched but nothing compares to actually being there. Seeing this again, there are just no words for it. SHE KILLED IT! What a Goddess. I love how her hands are in front of her face for a lot of it, you can see how much she is connecting to the pain. There's no beauty and the beast here, she's the real thing! She's in such a trance, I bet she doesn't even hear the fans screaming things at her or she learned to tune it out over the years when it's such a serious song (and why do people scream out loud during slow songs anyway, so rude).

I love this song, of course. Tuesday vegas.
I just wanted to repeat my theory that her voice gets better for BATB - I've not heard a bad boot of it. But whether there is a bad one or not, I've noticed that her voice could ripped up during other songs, and then it's time for BATB and suddenly her voice is more clear and steady, and her range is expanded.
It's a great live song for her.
I've been listening to the tape of her w/tom petty when she first shows him BATB, and at the beginning it has her describing the movie and how she felt about it - sounds like she just came from it recently, had seen it with Tom - and you can hear in her voice how much the movie entranced her and gave her something to think about. It's lovely.

It's lovely.I haven't heard that in a long time, but I would question whether that Tom is Tom Petty.

She used to do tons of demos with another guy named Tom, who played bass & sang.

In other news, i think last year's release of "La Belle" by Cocteau from Criterion should have had a live rendition of Stevie on it as one of the 2nd disc extras. I mean ... why not? Criterion would have been happy to sell 100,000 more of those discs.

Yeah, I'll post it when I get home.
David - it sounds like Tom Petty's voice, and whoever it is is playing guitar trying to learn it, but you're probably right. I wouldn't know.
And no, I don't think it is totally because of the song. If that were true, there are other songs I should notice the same phenom during, but I haven't.
I'm not sure I would totally call the song languid and peaceful. Languid yet intense? There's a fair range in the song, as well.

Although she wore the velvet jacket & top hat on the tail end of the Tusk Tour, too, as shown in these photos.

But here's a shot from the Forum on the Mirage Tour:

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b298/cbrook/MirageTour07.jpg

The thing that made me think Jannie's photo was from the late Tusk Tour was that Stevie had no choker ribbon on, & I thought she almost always wore that throughout the tour. However, if you look at the tambourine itself, you can see it's the larger, thinner tambourine with lighter wood. Whereas the tambourine she had on the Tusk Tour was smaller, wider & darker.

By the way, does anyone know which night of the Mirage Tour it was when Stevie wore this smashing all-white outfit?
