View Full Version : Lyric Interpretation - Ooh My Love
This is my very first interp. I tried to pick a song people would actually do, so don't be shy. :)
*********************************************
Ooh My Love
Stevie Nicks/Rick Nowels
(Ooh my love...)
In the shadow of the castle walls
Wherever those walls were
Well you used to love...to be behind...those walls with
her
Within these walls...
Well he watched from the corridor...
Watched from the corner of his eyes...
Seemingly waiting for the time...
When the castle walls...would all fall down
Yes it was a strain on her...
Watching her castles fall down
Oh...but there was a time when...he called her "angel"
Where in the world did you come from?
In the shadow of the castle walls
Wherever those walls were
In this land or in that land
Well the castles all seem to belong to her
And all this talk...about love and hate
And our separation way on down the line...
Well they just can't wait, can they?
No they just can't wait...
Yes it was a strain on her...
Watching her castles fall down
Oh...but there was a time when...he called her "angel"
Where in the world did you come from?
Yes it was a strain on her
Watching her castles fall down
Oh...but there was a time when...he called her "angel"
Where in the world did you come from?
There was a light that lighted the way to the chamber...
Where they spent all their time, well...
There was a light that lighted the way to the chamber
door where...
They seemed to spend all their time...
Ooh my love...Ooh my love...Ooh my love...
Yes it was a strain on her...
Watching her castles fall down
Oh...but there was a time when...he called her "angel"
Where in the world did you come from?
Yes it was a strain on her...
Watching her castles fall down
Oh...but there was a time when...he called her "angel"
Where in the world did you come from?
Yeah it was a strain on her...
Watching her castles fall down
Hey, hey, baby...No one can take you away from
me...no...no one...
In the shadow of the castle walls...

Josh-
You must be getting a little  no one is putting down there interpetation, well I will :)
Great song, but all of hers are great so...
When I first heard this song I was convinced it was about Lindesy ;)-stil em :D.It seems like most of them are :rolleyes:What do you think ?
"Oh there was a light that lighted the way to the chamber door where they seemed to spend all their time..."-S.N. (best line out of all the other great lines in that song)
-alex-
First of all I would like to say that this song is one of my favorite Stevie solo songs.
Every time I hear it I just think of Stevie in her big beautiful castle with the man of her dreams(prince charming). She is dressed in her usual attire(chiffon, velvet and lace; draped precariously from her smooth ivory skin smelling of heavenly scents....I'm getting carried away here)LOL. Anyway, the image of a princess..you know! The long dark corridors are lit by only torches hanging from the walls. Fireplaces are lit in every room of her palatial estate. And there Stevie is with everything she needs in her life. The love of her lifetime surrounded by all the atmosphere and beauty anyone could ever want or need. Shangri-La indeed. Then something seems to go wrong. The fire doesn't burn as bright and things dont seem just right. What the princess has longed for all her life is slipping away from her and there is nothing she can really do to stop it! She is left ALONE behind what now is only stone and emptiness; cold dark corridors where once eternal love was felt.
These are just some of the images I see and emotions I feel when I hear this song.
What I think it means basically is that when you fall in love and really fall in love with someone, there is nothing else in the world that takes precedence over that love. It's as if you were in a castle all alone with your lover and no one else is around and it doesnt matter at all. Then when that person falls out of love with you(watching her castles fall down) it is of course a real strain on you. And I think in this particular instance Stevie knows, that this man knows that it will not work out("Watched from the corner of his eyes...Seemingly waiting for the time...When the castle walls...would all fall down"). Stevie has talked about this before and probably one of the main reasons she is not with someone today. Her world(castle) is just too much for any man to handle and deal with so it just is evident that this "fairy tale" relationship will not work out. As much as this happens though these relationships are real special and everlasting to Stevie and these loves never really die but are with her forever.
Beautiful song :)

Joe, I couldn't have said it better myself. Everything you said to describe the atmosphere of this song is true. I feel the exact same way when I hear this song. It is one of Stevie's most beautiful. One of my favorites. :)

My personal interpretation of this song is that this song is about Stevie and Jimmy Iovines relationship... Being on OSOTM, I feel it may have been written in reflection of her Rock A Little Experiences...
In the shadow of the castle walls
Wherever those walls were
Well you used to love...to be behind...those walls with
her
I always thought the castle walls referred to Stevie experiences in the Recording Studio...In the beginning of Stevie's solo career, her and Jimmy used to be behind the castle walls recording her music...
Within these walls...
Well he watched from the corridor...
Watched from the corner of his eyes...
Seemingly waiting for the time...
When the castle walls...would all fall down
But after Rock A Little those Castle Walls fell down. Since Jimmy was a New Yorker, I always had the impression that he may have thought Stevie was a too good to be true...
Yes it was a strain on her...
Watching her castles fall down
Oh...but there was a time when...he called her "angel"
Where in the world did you come from?
I've always heard the "angel" references are Linsay related but I think the "Where in the world did you come from?" comment could be a Jimmy statement. The pleasant surprise of working with such a talented songwriter not just a "pretty face who could sing"
In the shadow of the castle walls
Wherever those walls were
In this land or in that land
Well the castles all seem to belong to her
And all this talk...about love and hate
And our separation way on down the line...
Well they just can't wait, can they?
No they just can't wait...
This part is about having it all, the career, the fame and even the love of a man. But with fame, there's always gossip and rumours about a star's love affairs. The media puts you on a pedestal just to tear you down. The Rock A Little Tour was the first time, I ever saw Stevie criticized in music review and papers...
There was a light that lighted the way to the chamber...
Where they spent all their time, well...
There was a light that lighted the way to the chamber
door where...
They seemed to spend all their time...
I've read and heard that Stevie loves to record at night and light takes on a magical glow at night. these lines support my "recording studio" theorey...
Ooh my love...Ooh my love...Ooh my love...
Hey, hey, baby...No one can take you away from
me...no...no one...
In the shadow of the castle walls...
I really love Stevie song endings...she can write the saddest lyrics to make you cry. But she always leaves you with a little strength and courage to get up from your misery and go on...like she herself always does.

Bella Figura-
That is an interesting theory :)
At least someone finally put what man they think the song is in refernce to,lord knows trying to find out who every song is in refernce to would be a big task to handle.
I always got this feeling that is was about Lindsey of course I think that every song is because those two were thee couple(and that was her greatest love :D) so I think every song is in refernce to him until I hear it's not. :rolleyes:You just may have changed my mind...maybe :p

I have always interpreted this song as being about Stevie's life in the music industry, and her health as well. I think "castles" and "castle walls" in this song refer to her image as a rock and roll star, along with her health. The line "In the shadow if the castle walls..." might refer to Stevie hiding behind her image, and being a different person than the big famous rocker that the world knows: there is more to her than that; a side of her people don't know, or don't takethe time to know.
TOSOTM was Stevie's first album after her Betty Ford recovery. So the line "It was a strain on her, watching her castle fall down" could refer to the possibility of Stevie's life (health) falling apart, once she realized she did have a serious addiction. She was scared, and didn't know if her "castle" could remain standing.
Now, another point all together, the line: "And our separation way on down the line, no they just can't wait can they?" I think this could refer to the public's constant thrive for gossip. There are rumors circulating that Fleetwood Mac might break up ("our separation"), but Stevie doesn't think they will ("way on down the line"). However, the public is always looking for something to talk about ("no they just can't wait, can they?").
This could also have some reference to the line "he watched...seemingly waiting for the time when her castle walls would all fall down". It sounds like both of these lines imply that someone was waiting for Stevie to fail (possibly because of her drug use/recovery?). Whether it be 1 person, or a group of people, I'm not sure.
I know this isn't that much, but this is my FIRST lyric interp here! This is so much fun, and I am looking forward to doing more!

Ohh! I've never done this before, but I will try.
I love everyone's ideas. Everytime I heard this song I thought it was partly inspired by FM. Just some of the lines always take me in that direction.
"In the shadow of the castle walls
Wherever those walls were
Well you used to love...to be behind...those walls with her"
This just gives me the image of FM in the studio. How when they first started out, they liked being there in the studio. But then it fell apart. They weren't doing the songs as a whole. And during Tango...that was probably the hardest. Everyone was saying Stevie didn't show up and all.
"Hey, hey, baby...No one can take you away from me...no...no one..."
I referance this to the "He called her angel" line. To me it just seems that Stevie is saying that Lindsey left Fleetwood Mac, but he really CAN'T get away. They were through too much. And that FM will still be there and they will be good.

Hey Jensen :)LOL
Yeah that's a god point.See I always thought it had something to do with FM too because when I heard the line you qouted I emmidiately thought about Lindsey. :D That is something that he probably used to call her :pWith the lyrics set up like that I think your interpertation is the one I like the most.LOL to all the other ones, but I agree with Jensen!!
"There was a light that lighted the way to the chamber door where they spent all their time, oh there was a light that lighted the way to the chamber door where, they SEEMED to spend all their timmmmmmme... Ohhh my Love"-S.N.
I think that part gives it away also ;)

I'd just like to say that I'm only doing this because I am still your penis and you did tell me I have to but it's not going to be very good because as you know there's no one in the world that thinks quite like I do...or anything even remotely close to how I do...actually I'm also doing this because something is taking forever to download and I can't sleep because I got tons of sleep after school because I was sick and didn't go to work and alreayd did my tropical design so all I have left is tracing but I have an entire week to do it...of course it would have been much easier had you picked a song I could relate to;-)...but then there aren't many songs I could fit into my life right now...actually there are some but I can't remember what they are right now...anyway, on with the terrible interp
(Ooh my love...)
In the shadow of the castle walls
Wherever those walls were
Well you used to love...to be behind...those walls with
her
Within these walls...
Well he watched from the corridor...
Watched from the corner of his eyes...
Seemingly waiting for the time...
When the castle walls...would all fall down
Okay, warning for anyone reading this...My interp will be so totally off that I don't expect anyone to agree with me...anyway, I think that what she's saying here and hell, I'll go for it the damn song is about Lindsey...anyway, I think that she's trying to say that maybe she feels that even when things were great between them and they still really loved each other maybe there was a part of him (also, right now I'd like to mention that in the off chance I'm stealing anyones ideas it's because I didn't read anyones before I started mine...and the fact that I think like you do should frighten you ;)) that maybe couldn't believe how great things were and waited for something to go wrong
Yes it was a strain on her...
Watching her castles fall down
Oh...but there was a time when...he called her "angel"
Where in the world did you come from?
Okay, of course it was hard on her to watch what she thought was this perfect relationship crumble and she kept thinking back to the time when everything was great (did I mention I probably had a little too much sleep today?) and wondered how he was so lucky to have someone as wonderful as she was (cause damn it he was lucky to have someone as great as her and he should have seen that a long time ago)
In the shadow of the castle walls
Wherever those walls were
In this land or in that land
Well the castles all seem to belong to her
And all this talk...about love and hate
And our separation way on down the line...
Well they just can't wait, can they?
No they just can't wait...
okay, because the song gets fuzzier here for me (and also because my file is almost complete) I'm probably gonna make less sense here...anyway, though she seems to have everything (yeah Josh, why couldn't you have done I sing for the things that one is easy...or something about having a huge crush on the attached friend of someone who seems to have a crush on you cause right now I could totally relate to that) she still doesn't really want to face the end of the relationship even though because she's in the public eye she has to
Yes it was a strain on her...
Watching her castles fall down
Oh...but there was a time when...he called her "angel"
Where in the world did you come from?
Yes it was a strain on her
Watching her castles fall down
Oh...but there was a time when...he called her "angel"
Where in the world did you come from?
I already gave my thoughts on this one but I do have to say, Angel also would've been easier to interpret...anyway, I think that the only real comfort she got (okay, I could say something here but I wont because I would get so flamed for it) anyway, the only real comfort was remembering the good times...did I already say that? if I did then it's your own fault for telling me I HAD to do this ;)
There was a light that lighted the way to the chamber...
Where they spent all their time, well...
There was a light that lighted the way to the chamber
door where...
They seemed to spend all their time...
Hahahahahahahahahaha...again, I'll get flamed but, you know what I'm thinking here...you've read the stories...anyhow, their love had been so strong it was like...damn, I'm really, really bad at this...did I mention also that my mind has totally been on nothing but my design for the last week? anyway it was like a light all around them...yes, I know that sounds corny but it's 2 in the morning...and well, they spent a lot of time in the chamber ;) hehehehehehehehehehehe...I can't do it...I just can't
In the shadow of the castle walls
Okay, besides all the stuff I already got to in there I think she's saying that no matter what happens and who each of them might be with nothing and no one will ever take away what went on between them...he'll always be a part of her and she'll always be a part of him (damn, now I have terrible mariah songs going through my head...that's it I'm suing for penile abuse) and um...I guess that's it cause my file is done so I have to take a shower now...and well, it sucks enough as it is anyway...

Hey Sammi,LOL :)
hahahaha so blunt ,I think most of her songs are about Lindsey  that's why I wouldn't have a clue on where to begin a interpretation. ;)You at least said what I wanted to say-are interpretation is the same basically :D the light in the chamber thing was hilarius :p and I like a person who will write every single thing that they are going through while they write cause that's how my writng is
