So you mean just a regular covers album then?

I'd rather she didn't, personally. If she were to do an album of mostly jazz/blues standards with maybe a couple of wildcards thrown in (a la Willie Nelson's Stardust, which is still a brilliant album, even if it is the one that first gave rock and country stars the idea to flood the marketplace with all manner of crap in the same vein), with a very small, basic band and maybe a string quartet or something, I think that could be interesting.

But just a bunch of rock covers? What would be the point? Would she be inspired enough to make them significantly different from the originals? A whole album of "I Need To Know" and "Just Like A Woman" ain't gonna cut it.

I guess she can add in a few wildcards, but it kinda would be cool to see all classics but then everyone is copying off of each other.

In Stevie's case, you're probably right, although there are many other artists who have released covers albums smack in the middle of their careers.

But don't most folks around here believe the end is near for Stevie's career already anyway?

What do you mean by "everyone is copying off each other"?

Well, that is why they're called standards: they're standard, and lots of people record them, and there are certainly enough out there that she could find some that haven't been recorded very recently (although Rod seems to be shitting out every old tune he can get his hands on, like they're going out of style). The point is just to bring something new to the table with those songs and reinterpret or reinvent them in some way, or just give them a new voice.

If she released a project like this tomorrow, though, I can see how a lot of people would feel like it'd be just a retread, since there have been a lot of folks doing standards albums lately. But if she waited a few years, and chose her songs very carefully so as not to overlap too much with what Rod and others have been doing, I think she could have something pretty respectable on her hands.

It would be the kiss of death to her songwriting career if she ever did anything like what Rod is doing. Rod isnt much of a songwriter - and his career was basically in the toilet until he pulled the Linda Ronstadt stint of doing covers. And he has had a huge hit with it -- good for him. Rod is a great performer. I met him in the 80's and he was a total doll.
I think that Stevie still has many tricks up her sleeves...she SHOULD release the orchestra Australian show...tour behind that WITH an orchestra....do the Rhiannon project that she has always teased us with...and then...put out the autobiography.

personally, i do NOT want Stevie to do an album full of covers
wouldn't you rather have NEW material?
But if she *god forbid* decided to record one she would totally have to sing 'After All' with Liddy of course :blob1:

Stevie BETTER release the Melbourne show on CD/DVD hell TV special will do great too. It's what singers do when they're at the TOP baby PERFORM WITH THE Melb Symph Orch :woohoo:

I think this would be a really bad idea. I think an unplugged cd/dvd of her own music would be better :o
