View Full Version : Lindsey versus Stevie (UH-oh!...)

Okay so here's a question that I've been meaning to ask for awhile -
Does anyone else besides me have trouble telling when it's Lindsey
singing and when it's Stevie singing, on the album "Tusk?"
I know that he spent a lot of time in the studio on it in
post-production - Arranging it and all that - is it possible
that there were places where he took out Stevie's voice
and replaced it with his own? For example at the end of
"Beautiful Child" it's clearly him singing,
"I'M not a child any-more,
I'M not a child, any-more."
There seem to me to be several other places where at first blush it sounds like Stevie, but is really Lindsey, and vice-verse.
Remember, this was "back in the day" when things were - uhm - errr - "bumpy" between them.
Anyone have any insights or opinions?

Personally I don't see him being THAT vindictive to pull something like that intentionally, but that's just me.

 Ha! That's true, he DOES sound like Stevie there. I read someone's comment in an article somewhere that Lindsey Buckingham was DESTINED to sing in a band full of women because of his high voice. Truer words were never spoken. I think it's funny how Christine is the "bass" in that 3-part harmony! But I guess Stevie is now. Maybe we should have a poll, "Which lady of Fleetwood Mac has the deeper voice these days?".

I thought for the longest time that Stevie was singing on "The Ledge" until I listened closely and realized that its just Lindsey.

Stevie talked about how similar both she and LB sound at times during TISL as well. She said that her voice speeded up..(or slowed down?) sounded like Lindsey and that LIndseys voice slowed down..(or speeded up, I cannot remember which way it was) sounds just like her. Stevie commented that it "was spooky" or "freaky" or something like that. :blob1:
I have a hard time telling them apart in some of the Fritz stuff. They sound perfect together though. :o

At first, I though it was LB singing that second "I knew you would" in Angel.

"I'M not a child any-more,

No conspiracy there, just bringing the song to its natural conclusion. :)

I thought for the longest time that Stevie was singing on "The Ledge" until I listened closely and realized that its just Lindsey.I thought for the longest time that Stevie was singing on "The Ledge" until I heard Lindsey explain that several tracks, including that one, were essentially all him vocally & even instrumentally.
People yammer about how Lindsey tried to make this song or that song sound like Stevie. I think what he was partially trying to do was to make some of these songs -- at least some of the vocal harmonic textures -- sound like Fleetwood Mac (a sound that, by the way, he played a pretty big role in creating).
Also, it was mentioned awhile back that Lindsey was working on arrangements during post-production. I don't think that's possible, by virtue of the definition of both "arrangement" & "post-production." If you're still working on vocal arrangements (or even instrumental arrangements), you're ipso facto not in post-production. You're still in ----- production. Post-production is stuff like mastering, acetates, sleeve/jacket design, marketing ploys, &c., ain't that right? It certainly doesn't include aspects of recording, unless you're talking about a live album, where the recording of the concert itself is the equivalent of the production, & overdubs could be considered post-production. But even with that, I'm dubious. If you're recording tracks, you're in production. Period.

Woooow, that's deep!
Just listened to it, I think that it is him singing that part mostly, but I guess we'll never know if it was intentional ... Tusk is an odd album
As for the Stevie/Lindsey similarity and the high voice thing, well, I for several months believed that it was Stevie singing the chorus on Come.

didn't Jim Ladd bring that up with Lindsey during the 1979 Innerview? Anyone have that handy?

Interesting how she leaves the stage at that point in "Live in Boston."
Presumably she's Off Pouting Somewhere.
Although these days I bet it's more like she's checking out her stocks on

No way. I don't recall the Gift of Screws track being any different from the Say You Will track, at least vocally. When's the last time Stevie sang any notes like that?

No, it's definitely him on the record ... Incredible, huh?
Story goes that Stevie didn't like the song, she thought it was too sexually explicit [or something] and that she didn't want it on the album, let alone on the set list...
I think it was a costume change for her during that song on the tour, on Live in Boston, Gypsy comes right after it and she's wearing something different.
But the Gift of Screws version is the exact same as the SYW one.
