Well, I can tell you as a fan of almost 29 years that when I first heard Gold Dust Woman as a 6 year old in 1977, that was it for me. I mean what else soulc there be to explain why a 6 year old kid made a connection like that with a song and a band other that to say that it's something very spritual.

Stevie represents so many things. The irony, is that it is often so difficult to state why someone is your idol. She is giving, loving and generous and one hell of a songwriter. Lets face it...sometimes it's as simple as this: :o
*Her words are honest, beautiful, and sometimes you have to dig deep. :woohoo:
*Her melodies grab ahold of your heart and warm it.
*Her words remind you of yourself, your life or people you love.
*Her style is ageless and a constant. It evokes the 60's and the Renaissnace, still with a little bit of darkness that some of us adore.
*Her beauty. Period. :)
*Her beliefs in angels, spirits and dreams makes us all want to strive.
*her voice....many people I know don't like her voice because of the tone...we LOVE her voice because of the tone, that deep cigarette tone, that seems to speak directly to each one of us.
*The love for what she does...people who are passionate about their work are admirable and beautiful. @--}---

it's her voice.............
who else has ever sung with such a voice?
aside from Janis Joplin and Patti Smith, i can't think of a more unique singer.
she's gifted - and the vocal training in the 90's helped to redeem her standing in rock and roll history.
after that, the rest is gravy - her beauty, her songwriting, the musicians she surrounds herself with -
over the years - it all added to charisma, lindsey buckingham, don henley, tom petty, jimmy iovine, benmont, mike campbell, sheryl crow, california, etc, etc.

I've always thought she's had a warm, motherly vibe about her. Moreso now that she's gotten older. Her smile is very inviting and sincere... She's really "huggable". And from the looks of it lately, smoochable.

She is very intense, I'd say. I've noticed in interviews, that she's got a... well, as you said, direct way of speaking.

I'm with you that the voice is one of the main things (in addition to the stage presence and such). But more specifically, the wail. It's that rawk&roll yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelllllllllllll that makes songs like "Rhiannon," "Gold Dust Woman," "Edge Of Seventeen" knock you on your ass. And even in its more moderated form, it provides a hook that elevates an otherwise just-okay song like "If You Ever Did Believe" into something more.

It's the voice. That's what first draws you in.
After that it's the image, the eyes, the relationships, the meanings behind the songs and the voice.

Well...it depends on which interview you read.

In addition to what everyone else has already said:
It's the way she touches your soul, grabs at your heart, and makes you feel so special as if she singing her songs just for you. It's more of a feeling and transcends anything I could possibly put into words. It's as intense of a connection you can have with someone without actually knowing them. And the unique thing about Stevie is her ability to connect on such an deep level with her fans which cannot be said for most popular entertainers today.

She's enigmatic, foxy, talented. She worked her ass off to get where she is. She took chances (solo career). She battled addiction and won. Even with all the glitzed up hype, she still seems to be grounded and relatively humble.

Hmmm i dont know how to explain what it is about her and her music that i just adore. I had this dilemma when i was going to meet her.. didn't know what to say. What i do know is that i want to listen to her when im sad, happy, overjoyed, annoyed, angry, in love and in tears. She just seems to fit perfectly into all my moods and my life no matter where i am or whatever i am doing. I dont seem to ever seriously try to sit back and interpret her lyrics line by line, and there are times i certainly feel as though that means im not a big fan, yet i also feel as though the understanding of her ways, the basic interpretation of her lyrics, her passion and emotion comes through anyway...
What can i say... i just love it!
I may not know why, but i do know that her love remains... :xoxo:

(turned into stone)... just joking about that last bit... couldn't help myself  But yes it seems as though when i was in her presence early november, and right in front of her at 3 fmac syw tours that "somthing" just wasn't there... hmm dont know how to explain this and dont want to get into too much trouble by fellow ledgies.

[QUOTE=maygirl] What makes Stevie so charismatic and enchanting that so many are so fascinated by her after 30+ years ?????????QUOTE]
She has kind of a weird inaccessible accessibleness to her. Make sense??
Check out towards the end of the Gypsy video - she has sort of this "you can have me (no, of course you can't REALLY (but you can - not - can ))" thing going. Sort of like, "You can not, not, not, not, not, not, not have me" thingy and you find yourself waiting till she leaves and then counting the "nots" as you wonder if that noise you hear off in the distance is her chuckling at you. She paid VERY close attention to her influences, for example, Joni Mitchell, Mabel Normand, Greta Garbo, etc. (And I suspect Bette Davis, although she's never admitted that publicly) and she learned from them how to be "mysterious" etc. (plus she just plain IS, and loves being that way).
She also has this amazing balance of "strength" and "femininity" going - she's fine-tuned that to a "t" over the years. And she manages to do that - to be "pro girl-power" - without being "in your face" or "political" about it. She also has managed to build up this "mystique" about her just by being herself, and (as I'm sure her mother taught her...), she "always leaves them guessing" - she lets you see JUST enough to make you wonder, "Just how deep IS she!??? Is she really THAT smart!???"
So she's both old-fashioned and modern at the same time.
And you somehow sense that she LOVES both.
As we do.
Also, granted this must vary from time to time and day to day, based on the situation, her mood, whether she's feeling well,
her energy level, etc., but in general she GENUINELY loves her fans and loves meeting them and talking with them. And she
sort of "lends love" to people, JUST 'cause she can. She has this Attitude about her like, "HEY it's no skin off MY back, why
not spread some LOVE!?" I really do suspect that that's a very real, genuine part of "the real Stephanie Nicks," but also a
"product" of the time she grew up - she remembers, and she knows how lucky we ALL are and feels that VERY strongly.
I only recently learned that Mr. Nicks was in the Navy in WWII and I've come to feel that that's a VAST influence that's been
totally overlooked - both on her songwriting, and on who she is as a person.
OH and she writes awesome songs!

Stevie's amazing voice and lyrics are what make her amazing to moi. I also find her fascinating because after a few decades of idolizing her, I still do not feel like I know the real woman...behind the image. She really does not let us see her soul, unless she wants to. We catch glimpes of the real Stephanie but in reality the fans only know "Stevie Nicks". The abilty to create that image and stick to it for all these years takes an incredible inner strength and sometimes huge sacrifice.

Stevie is so cool to me because she was so swirly & sexy onstage, & she had a great distinctive singing voice that had probably one of the broadest emotional palettes of any singer in rock (her equals were Springsteen, Bono, Sting, Elvis Costello, Elton John ... the greats).
Stevie circa 1976 ... when you're that good-looking, you command the world.

Something about this member of the press who said she had interviewed enough rock stars to know when she was being handed a line, but that Stevie struck her as almost naively truthful . . . .
I think she comes across that way and she is well aware of it as she proclaims to want to adhere to her innocence, which is a similar thing.

I think she comes across that way and she is well aware of it as she proclaims to want to adhere to her innocence, which is a similar thing. It's an enormous testament to Stevie that writers & commentators in the music business (Jim Ladd, too) have consistently remarked
on Stevie's honesty.
In stark contradistinction to the opinion offered earlier (I think it was Kelly?) that we don't really know Stevie, I think Stevie's honesty & forthrightness all these decades have allowed us to know her far more than other music fans know most of their idols. I myself feel I have a pretty good handle on Stevie's personality & character, thanks to the millions of words she has had to say about herself throughout her adulthood. You never get a complete picture, even of yourself. But millions of words, the majority of which were spoken in anything but a calculating way, do give you a very good picture.

I agree. I also think people get confused or put off by the way La Nicks speaks in this shotgun random pattern that jumps from topic to topic and often time period to time period. I usually get what she is saying and do not see as many inconsistencies as most do. But, in that effort to explain what was and is going on, she does indeed reveal a wealth of information, at least the way I see it.
It makes me think of the Letterman Street Angel interview when she looked like a kid in a candy shop when she got to tell him about the Clinton performance. She looked genuinely happy to tell that story to the world just as if she were telling it to her best friend.
Sadly, some of the Timespace era interviews are not good. But, even then, she was perhaps rawer in those than in the others in the sense that her pain and anger were very apparent, which also is a very revealing thing.
I do also admire her ability to keep her public and private lives apart. I respect that she never really since Joe Walsh has named anyone she has dated, save perhaps Rupert Hine (did they date?). I mean she is allowed some privacy.

Did you hear the one before the Great Woods Concert when she takls about how mad she is at Mick because he wont let her read the book. That one is kind of sad. Then theres the rockline one on video with the girl with huge tits and she she says she just wants to go back on tour....she never did go back on tour.
