Stevie's buzzing
RITCHIE YORKE
30oct05
AT HOME in her beloved Santa Monica mansion, Stevie Nicks (pictured) is feeling the thrill of a returning songwriting buzz.
For the first time in more than 18 months, the 57-year-old sex siren of the shimmering '70s has put pen to paper.
The new song is an ode to New Orleans, as yet untitled, but bound to wring a few more drops of emotion from that familiar Southern whipping post.
"I'm in the middle of writing a happy song – not a sad song – about the plight of New Orleans.
"I have so many memories of New Orleans because we always play there.
"I'm not gonna write a really miserable song," she ruefully declares. "I'm going to write a song about the New Orleans that was – and hopefully will come again.
"This is the first song that I've written in over 18 months. The last songs I wrote were the four tunes I wrote for the Say You Will project (2003). Since then I've written nothing."
But she's certainly had her eyes tightly focused on other balls, such as performing.
"Well yes. After we, Fleetwood Mac, left you guys in 2004, we went back to the States and did another four months of shows. Then I went into pre-production for myself and started out with four shows in Virginia in May.
"Then I did 10 shows with Don Henley and that was lots of fun. Then I followed up with 20 shows by myself and I'm into a little break time now. But we're rehearsed and ready to go."
Accompanying Nicks on her double header with John Farnham at the Entertainment Centre on February 20, will be a distinguished nine-man band under the direction of the redoubtable Waddy Wachtel.
Some observers might suggest that Wachtel's talents alone are worth the price of admission. But that might cast unfair aspersions at the feet of two honest triers such as Nicks and Farnham.
"Waddy is my musical director and he plays guitar for me. He really doesn't go out on the road with anyone else except me. He's like my Keith Richards and I'm happy, frankly, that he's not out doing everybody's stuff. He stays in town, mainly working on film and TV projects," she says, with just a touch of elitism.
"There's parts of this band of mine that go way, way back."
With an extensive punter-friendly repertoire that includes such gems as Bella Donna, Stop Draggin' My Heart Around, Edge of Seventeen, White Wing Dove and Leather and Lace, Stevie operates from a pretty special place in the public psyche.
The Australian response to last year's Fleetwood Mac-athon was a key reason driving Stevie's desire to get back Down Under. But equally significant was a timely invitation from the tuned-in Melbourne Symphony Orchestra for Nicks to join them in a high profile union.
She's flown out to Australia this weekend to announce the symphony gig and to attend Tuesday's big puntathon at Flemington.
If she seemed a tad flustered during our conversation, there was ample reason for it.
"My father passed away about six weeks ago. It was sad but it's OK. He was in a lot of pain and needed to move on. But it put me into a bit of a different space.
"So I should remember to tell you that there's a Best Of retrospective coming out to tie-in with the tour. But there won't be any new tracks. When I came off the road six weeks ago, I just didn't have the time to do some new recording. And anyway, I didn't have any new material until I started writing this song about New Orleans."
Stevie Nicks will perform with John Farnham at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre on February 20.
I am surprised she hasn't written any other songs since SYW. I thought she was always writing and would have some good material while being on the road for so long.

Hmmm. This means no solo album. There is no new material.
Rehearsals for Mac at the end of 06, and back on the road in 07.
Maybe a solo record in late 08 ?

When all else fails slap on some obscure rarity or something... I don't know. Seems a shame to have a best of without at least one new track! Everyone puts at least one new track don't they? Actually include the Dreams Deep Dish thing... There's your song and it just might sell a few extra copies because of it.
Is this even for a North American release?

Which is it, Stevie? It is a contradictory statement, but perhaps none of what she was writing ended up developing into complete songs?
I wonder whatever happened to the song she was reported to have recorded sometime during the 'Say You Will' tour. It was a cover tune, and had "Angels" in the title, I think.
I had assumed it was being recorded for a soundtrack, but nothing ever came of it.
Would have been cool if she had included something like that on the "best of" set.

There's your song and it just might sell a few extra copies because of it.Not everyone includes a new track, but it does help sales when they do. I doubt she could have found something to include that we haven't all heard anyway, but it would have been a nice opportunity to give one of the vaulted songs an official release.
As far as "Dreams"... she might not be able to include it on her album when Deep Dish is still promoting their own.
I think that, unless there's a contractual agreement from the get-go that both parties can include a song on their individual releases, that there's a standard "waiting period."
I remember Bonnie Tyler once stating that she couldn't use a soundtrack song for one of her (MANY) "best of" albums that was being readied for release, unless she "waited another six months" or something like that.

furthermore, who cares? I mean, get off of it. I'll buy anything she puts out, but that's just me. :) If it isn't appealing to you, then don't buy it and don't worry about it. By now, we all know Stevie does nothing but contradict herself so taking the time to bitch about this or that and quote this in direct response to another quote is useless. It is what it is. She either will or she won't and we'll just have to wait and see and enjoy the great music she's given us to this point.

See, I think she referred to always writing in her journal, which she says she does nightly. She then says she goes back through those volumes and pulls things out and turns it into prose. So, maybe she did the former and not the latter. Moreover, even if she pulled it out and turned it into prose, maybe she has not created the music. So, I do not think she is that off and I get what she is saying.

I don't think I see that quote the same, as it was in reference to making a record and writing. Which reads to me as songwriting. I don't doubt that she writes in her journal frequently. I also think all of those articles should be taken with a truckload of salt. Which provides us with an endless source of entertainment, clearly.

Who the hell says they get better as a writer because they write all the time in their journal? When she makes comments like the one I posted, does she think people are going to think "Ah, she's doing some journal writing! And she's getting better at it!" or are they going to think "Ah, she still writing fantastic songs, man!!" C'mon. That's a nice way of putting it... I've never thought of it that way.
It also is a popular musical theory that started years ago in, I believe, Tosca, when music is used to introduce him before he walk on the stage. Les Mis and Andrew Lloyd Webber and to some degree Sondheim also used it. So, she is in pretty good company, though the examples I used did it with musical notes as opposed to lyrics.

Puccini wrote "Tosca."
Puccini also wrote "Turandot," from which I have often compared Stevie to the tital character, as you may recall. In fact, all self-respecting Stevie fans should hear or see a production of "Turandot" because it is, in essence, Stevie Nicks on the Wild Heart Tour.

Some artists do all of their writing in the studio (I think the boys in Aerosmith do it that way), and some take only random melodies and/or lyrics into the studio with them.

A retrospective??? Come on... we've got Timespace and the Enchanted box set... the Dance is essentially a best of thing, isn't it?
An album of ancient demos and prev unreleased stuff would be much better. A hell of a lot more interesting than another Best Of album. Even with a new track on it. If Timespace is anything to go on, the new tracks will be pants.
Buckingham Nicks!! Surely that would sell well on CD?
I don't see the problem with doing an album of fresh material every couple of years. I think she's too caught up in collaborating... Sheryl Blinkin Crow, Don Henley... etc... I wish she'd write some basic stuff, just her without every bloody producer in the world sticking their noses in.
Stevie Nicks unplugged??

It is kind of cruel to talk about being ready to go into the studio and then turn around and say you've not written anything.
Still hopeful though...

Next year as in 2006, or 2007? Last I heard it was 2007, because she wants to take a year off (which I don't believe is a wise move for her). :distress: God, Stevie is confusing!

I respectfully disagree -- I think Stevie does have another solo album in her. It seems to me that a traumatic event really stirs Stevie's songwriter soul....I would think her father's death would prompt her to pen some new tunes. I think she needed a few weeks to get over the numbness of it (even when a death is expected, there's still a "shock factor" that a beloved is no longer with us in this world). I believe (wishful thinking perhaps) that some great solo songs are soon to come.....

"I realized I needed to add new material," Nicks says. "I told Lindsey, 'I know you've already been waiting for me for six months, but I need 30 days.' I told my brother, 'Fire up the 12-track Akai,' I got all my journals and went to work." - USA Today - April 27, 2003
When she finished that emotional tour in December of 2001, she called her bandmates and asked for 30 days to write some new songs reflecting the experiences she had across America post-9-11. When the month was up, she got on a plane, met her fellow Fleetwood Macs in California and presented the results. - The Salt Lake Tribune - August 1, 2003
As many songs as she has in those filing cabinents and the vault, aside from being leaked by whomever, most will never see the light of day. TISL included a few older songs -- well known demos that we know -- and then it included songs written by others or in combination with Stevie as well as some new stuff. Same with SYW. She feels the need to write something new for each album and not just pull from the vault it seems.

Which is my point. (sort of) - she has been writing likely daily in her journals. SHe just has not turned that into prose, which is what she did in the examples you noted above. But, she was still writing in the journals, which is where the four songs came from in the 30 days. Also, being on the road essentially two years with the Mac I am quite sure caused some SCORCHING journal entries
When all else fails slap on some obscure rarity or something... I don't know. Seems a shame to have a best of without at least one new track!
It does? I would think people would be excited at the prospect of saving fifteen bucks. If there's no new material, there's no reason to buy it if you've already got everything.
It is a contradictory statement, but perhaps none of what she was writing ended up developing into complete songs?
Does it ever? I thought that's what Lindsey was for.
Which is my point. (sort of) - she has been writing likely daily in her journals. SHe just has not turned that into prose,

I sorta agree with what your saying, except that a lot of TISL was
from the filing cabinet, and I believe some of Say You Will, as well.
For example "Planets of the Universe" (one of her most-brilliant songs,
i.m.o.) is actually a song from the late seventies/early 80s - "No Light,"
I believe the Demo was called. I think "Candlebright" and "Sorcerer"
are older, too. "Smile at You" has been floating around for some time
and used to be a VERY angry song. And "Goodbye Baby," of course,
is "The Tower," also from late 70s or early 80s.
I THINK maybe by "write" she's saying, "create publishable stuff
that is actually ready for an album."

How do you know? We know about Illume, but how do we know the others came from her journals? How do we know she didn't take those 30 days to actually write songs instead of copying and pasting stuff from journals? I'm sure she pulled lines here and there, but writing a song takes much more than putting lyrics together. Regardless of how she did it, one doesn't just pull shit out of a journal and call it a song.

BINGO! Jason I couldn't agree with you more. Why is it so difficult for people to comprehend that she's still writing all the time in her journals, she's just not making these entries into songs. Stevie has spoken over and over again of the process of how she writes song by taking her journal entries and turning them into pros which become her songs. Just because she's not doing that it doesn't mean she's not writing. I don't understand why so many people have a problem with this. She's still writing! She's just not turning them into songs.
Oh and of course I wish she were.

TISL included a few older songs -- well known demos that we know -- and then it included songs written by others or in combination with Stevie as well as some new stuff. Same with SYW. She feels the need to write something new for each album and not just pull from the vault it seems.
she better bloody record Prettiest Girl in the World before she hangs up her platforms and chiffon or i will go postal  :D

Yep, in music it's called leitmotif. I believe Richard Wagner was the very first to introduce its use in his operas.
It's used to reference and evoke previously established characters, situations, emotions and thematic elements.
Lindsey kind of does the same thing with his guitar playing, borrowing a chord or a riff from another song to put into a new song.

Ha! Love it.
So where is our water
Where has it gone
Where are our MRE's
Where is Michael Brown
Where has he gone to
What is it that's happening here
Brilliant :xoxo:
Love the song title ideas. How about 'Operation Flood the 9th Ward" er that is too long. How about "Operation Levy Break" or "Operation Flood Plain" or
"Operation Flood Demon". Ha ha get it? Opposite of Operation Desert Angel.
I know... kind of lame, but made me chuckle.

We all need to get together with our journals and a 4 track.
Can't you get into Sly's fabulous studio ?
I love your song!
Sly Stone has a been a recluse for couple of decades, so you might have to push him out of bed when you get to the Plant!
Or you could try this inspiring4901 fur environment;)
