Nix about Stevie rumours from council
31 October 2005
By ROB MAETZIG

New Plymouth District Council officials hurredly ducked for cover yesterday over rumours that Fleetwood Mac legend Stevie Nicks is to perform at the Bowl of Brooklands in March.

The American singer and songwriter is apparently booked for a three-concert New Zealand tour with Australian vocalist John Farnham, with the performances at North Harbour on March 4, New Plymouth's Bowl of Brooklands on March 5, and Christchurch on March 8.

But is the beautiful American, famous for such hits as Sara, Stop Dragging My Heart Around and Talk To Me, actually coming to Taranaki? Yesterday it was nix about Nicks from the New Plymouth District Council, which is responsible for Bowl bookings.

Mayor Peter Tennent appeared momentarily lost for words when asked if a Nicks/Farnham concert had been confirmed.

Then he said: "I'd rather not comment on that. But I will say that some exciting acts are coming."

The council's manager for recreation and events, Dave Lee, was even less forthcoming.

"I'm not going to confirm anything. When we're in a position to confirm something, we'll let you know," he said.

A concert by singer Stevie Nicks in New Plymouth was confirmed yesterday.

The American singer and songwriter will share the TSB Bowl of Brooklands stage with Australian John Farnham on Sunday, March 5, as part of a three-centre New Zealand tour.

Promoter Michael Glading said the Bowl was chosen because it was the right setting for such artists.

Mr Glading hinted that even more big gigs were planned for the Bowl in the near future, but would not elaborate.

American Nicks, described as one of the most enduring, influential and loved female artists in rock 'n' roll history, is famous for such hits as Stop Draggin' My Heart Around and Talk To Me.

Backed by her nine-piece band, she is expected to perform her greatest hits from her solo career and her Fleetwood Mac days.

Nicks is bringing one of her favourite young American performers, Vanessa Carlton (24), to be the special guest at her New Zealand shows. During her short career, classically-trained Carlton has enjoyed a multi-platinum debut album, Be Not Nobody, and a number one hit in the United States and Australia with the song A Thousand Miles.

With a career spanning almost four decades, John "You're the Voice" Farnham is best remembered in New Zealand as the lead singer of 1980s success story, The Little River Band. Farnham will be performing songs from his new album, I Remember When I Was Young: Songs From the Great Australian Songbook.

The two other New Zealand concerts will be held in Auckland on March 4 and Christchurch on March 8. Tickets for the Bowl will cost between $99 and $139 and go on sale through Ticketmaster from Tuesday, November 15.

This is awesome -- I will soo be there. Why did she choose John Farnham though? Our own Prime Minister (Helen Clark) doesn't even know who he is... I can see myself getting up for an intermission when he starts his set... :P
