ROCK star Stevie Nicks will be backed by the sonorous harmonies of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra when she performs next year. But do not expect a timid show.
"Led Zeppelin. That's what I want," she said emphatically yesterday.
"Like the strings in Kashmir. I don't want this to be (like the film) The Sound of Music."
The former Fleetwood Mac frontwoman will hit the Rod Laver Arena stage on February 18 as part of her "Gold Dust" tour.
Nicks' promoter has previously lured 1970s rockers Kiss and Meat Loaf to perform with the orchestra, and the 57-year-old singer is working on compositions to accompany her hit songs.
The decision about which songs to perform with the orchestra will come down to their suitability, she said.
"Edge of Seventeen, Stand Back, you don't know," she said.
Nicks has sung orchestra-backed versions of Etta James' classic ballads A Sunday Kind Of Love and At Last at festivals and both may be included in the six or so songs she will perform with MSO backing.
The Melbourne show will be the only place she will perform with the orchestra and her band. Nicks' other dates in Australia and New Zealand will feature her nine-piece band only.
Local legend John Farnham will play Brisbane and Perth, with US singer Vanessa Carlton supporting all shows.
Fleetwood Mac sold tens of million of albums off the back of such hit singles as Dreams, Everywhere and Go Your Own Way. Nicks has toured prolifically around the world as a solo artist.
On Stakes Day, Saturday, the Stevie Nicks Plate will be race seven on the card. Nicks will present the record-shaped trophy then.
She will be at the Melbourne Cup today and is tipping Eye Popper or Makybe Diva to win the big race. She is laying a bet on Xcellent for her mum.
So, if you see a 155-centimetre blonde rock star in a black slouch hat, pearled cape and heels - it's her.
The decision about which songs to perform with the orchestra will come down to their suitability, she said.
"Edge of Seventeen, Stand Back, you don't know," she said.
I think we do know. We heard similar stuff prior to the 'Dreams' shows in Vegas. She'll find a way to work in all the old standards.
Great article and pic though, thanks for posting! :wavey:

Anyone who thinks she is not going to perfrom 3/4 of the set list as old standards is not listening to what she repeatedly says, which is she has certain songs she feels she must do on stage. That is always going to be the ones she does not (Dreams, Rhiannon, EO17, SB, etc.) - I do think she will have cool orchestration. I mean look at that cool rendition of Landslide she did with that orchestra awhile back
In the end, I really want to go to this, but am scared I will not due to work

Sorry to any Aussies or New Zealanders, but damn, I wanted her to stay in the US and work on a new album, not tour again!
I guess if she's set on not doing any new music, it's better for people around the world to get to see her, but sigh, I was so hoping to hear news about a new album.
Cool article though (and a nice smiling pic!) - thanks for posting!

I'm not expecting anything unrealistic; I'd be happy with 'ROF' and 'TTM' (both of which would sound great with an orchestra, imho).
But for her to even imply 'EO17' and 'SB' might not work out, made me roll my eyes. But then again what doesn't...? :p

I really hope she does something fresh for this. If you're going to film a concert with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra for DVD, why would you want to do the same old thing? This is a grand opportunity to do something really fantastic. Stop resting on your laurels for once.

I think this is a snapshot of her done by a staff photographer when they interviewed her for the story. Based on the glaring imperfections that have been noted, it hardly comes across as a professionally lit glamour shot since little or no photoshopping was done. And I think she looks cute as hell.

I wonder if maybe this was taken by a friend or someone in her

If it was a pro there probably would have been artificial

Kinda off subject, but when I see pictures like this it reminds me that she's not getting younger (even though it's a good picture for a 57-year-old). Anyway, do you guys really think she will take an ENTIRE YEAR off after this Australia mini-tour? I'm guessing Mr. Fleetwood will have her back touring with the Mac sooner than she thinks. What do you guys think?

I think it's cute! It's a candid photo of her in her hotel room, not the cover of next month's Vogue :p. Consider too that the main light source is coming from an adjacent window, and one made of obscured glass at that. Not really optimal conditions for an early morning photoshoot.
I think the "eye thing" is just a combo of shadows, cake-y makeup, and a little wrinkle or two made worse than it actually is by sharpening of the photo for publication (kinda like the Condi Rice pic people were in an uproar about. Except that Ms. Rice is a lizard-hag to begin with.)

Yep. As usual, this whole thing is lame. I'm sooooooo tired of the quarter-assed execution of her stuff.
She will have about a total of six months to prepare for one show and five or six songs is the best she can do??? Lame. Lame. Lame.
"Stand Back" with an orchestra would be awful. Please do not do it.
There will be nothing creative or new on this thing. Just the same old recycled, tired show. Record a new album or retire already...

"She's still got it!", raves complacent Stevie Nicks fans throughout the world.
A reporter after the show walked up to a hysterical, sobbing fan- a woman in her 40's wearing a shawl and a top hat, "Oh my gawd- 'Rhiannon' was the best I've heard in a long time. She's really come back from her Street Angel days. She can still hit those high notes on 'Rhiannon'..." The woman broke into sobs and was helped away by her daughter Sara, aged 21.

I saw Sheryl Crow w/ strings last night at Lincoln Center (which they filmed BTW), and I couldn't help but wonder how Stevie was going to pull this off. I am sure it's no coincidence that Stevie happened to be seen attending one of Sheryl's recent shows. My overall impression was: eh  . It just meant that there were strings where there would normally be a keyboard or organ part. But then again, it occurred to me last night that a lot of Sheryl's recordings already had strings in them anyway, so the strings didn't seem particularly novel. It was more like, what would she have done without them?
Stevie, on the other hand, hasn't had much use for strings or string keyboard sounds on her recordings:
-Django/Races are Run
-Beauty and the Beast
-Crystal
Some songs that I think would really sound hot with strings:
-Rhiannon (the arrangements should mirror Christine's Fender Rhodes parts)
-At Last
-Sorcerer
-Trouble in Shangri-la (lots of rhythmic cello on the choruses!)
-If Anyone Falls (to mirror the synth parts).
-Has Anyone Ever Written Anything for You
This is really tempting... gah! I do want to go very badly. But it's not helping that ticket prices to all of these shows are so high. I realize that it is a large expense to lug her equipment and entourage (and supposedly furniture too! ) all the way down there, but US$150 per ticket is insane. I mean, can't she do some warmup shows in Vegas or something? So when does Screechine take another vacation from Caesar's?

Maybe more. Considering the fact that I will feel self indulgent and silly it could be 7k.
Wouldn't bankrupt me, but it seems a bit silly for 6 songs that I never heard before. Ooops. Subtract At Last, SKOL, and Landslide, as I bet she will recycle those and it means three. That 2k a song.

This pic bugs. Not sure why. She looks kinda cute, but there's something odd about it. :shrug:I'm not really loving it either. Most of that can be blamed on the bad lighting (I sure hope this wasn't taken by a professional photographer) but the make-up is off also. She still looks darn cute though, if you are willing to look past what I just mentioned. :xoxo:

I just sat my ass down, and did some calculations.
Figuring in the flight, a decent hotel, tix, spending money, and the possibility that I would lose a week of salary...without question this little week long vacation (and I am only thinking six days) would knock a 6k hole in the Sparky budget.
Looking like a foolish expenditure of money.
I'm amazed that people are actually considering going to these.

Since when has demanding fresh material been unreasonable expections??
or interested in shitting all over everything the woman does
Holy Exaggeration, Batman! Same old story from you Brian- I make a comment about how lazy she's getting and now I'm shitting all over EVERYTHING she does. I guess you missed my "Long Way To Go" Appreciation Thread.
Just because Stevie can do no wrong as far as you are concerned does not mean that others would prefer her to strive for greatness.

It will only be out of the ordinary if she's does some fresh material and puts some OOMPH into the vocals. Otherwise it will be very ordinary.
I haven't noticed any of the Australian fans pissing or moaning.
I wouldn't think they would. However, I did notice some of the Aussie's pissing and moaning about the Vegas performances- as well they should have. If I lived in Australia, I would have been torn between spending a lot of money and missing a potential "lifetime moment". Same thing for me- I was seriously considering laying out the cash to go and make a trip out of it with Gay Mardi Gras and all. However, after reading the "five or six songs" routine, I can imagine that it will not be worth it. Let's see....
"Dreams"
"Rhiannon"
"Gold Dust Woman"
"Landslide"
"Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You?"
"Stand Back"
instead of
"Crystal"
"Trouble In Shangri-La"
"Ooh, My Love"
"Kind of Woman"
"Battle of the Dragon"
"Storms"
All six of those songs are perfectly within her vocal ability these days- and would be phenomenal with a full orchestra. She could make the MSO songs magical and fresh and then leave her standard rock stuff for the nine-piece band. Heart was able to pull off the strings/woodwinds thing on The Road Home and they also pulled out some great stuff that hadn't be performed to death. Why Stevie can't give her fans just a little bit this, I'll never understand.

She should make the MSO songs special for everyone and rock out on the hits for the Aussies- I wouldn't have a problem with that. I went Vegas and spent some cash and the setlist was tired, but it was all worth it for "Beauty and the Beast".

Thanks for that Tiff (great points!) but even with all of these things taken into consideration the picture is still god-awful. I cringed when I saw it. She is so much prettier than this. You know what thought, so what? It's a bad picture, I could think of worse things.

Every time Stevie tours, the same old tired complaints about her "same old tired" setlist crop up.
The irony isn't lost on me as you guys endlessly repeat yourselves complaining about Stevie endlessly repeating herself.

And for the record, yes, I would love it if Stevie pulled out more rare songs and put together a setlist that would blow us all away (and shut a few people up in the process  ), but I'm not going to complain every. single. time. she doesn't.
At any rate, I'm not taking this little debate seriously... just fun to give you guys a hard time once in a while. :xoxo:

Bull shit. Stevie supposedly has such devoted fans all over the world, I think they'll be able to handle a concert in which Stevie doesn't hold their hands like children as she walks them through every one of her warhorses.
Why is it that the people who carp on others for wishing Stevie/FM would mix up her/their setlists always take that wish to mean, "They shouldn't play any hits whatsoever"? For the hundredth time, this is not an all-or-nothing proposition. Stevie plays between fifteen and twenty songs a night, there's no reason half of those can't be "rarities."
If she went out on stage and performed "Dreams," "Rhiannon," "Stand Back," "Edge of Seventeen" and "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around," and the rest were all b-sides and long-forgotten album tracks, I can't imagine that anybody would leave feeling disappointed that she didn't do "Outside The Rain" or "Enchanted."
And again, take a look at the Enchanted tour "acoustic set" for evidence that Stevie can do this and fans are appreciative of it.

I am not thinking the photo is all that bad. The makeup is a mess but shit happens. I like to see her smile because that is a rarity when she is photographed. We always get the "canned, serious, I am so sexy" pose.

And she clearly loved doing it! Why she has this idea that she could only ever do it on that tour is beyond me.
The true irony here is not that folks like us complain about stale setlists every tour. The true irony is this: The fact that there are so many fans who actually defend these tired song choices is exactly the reason that she should feel more comfortable mixing things up. Stevie has some of the most hardcore, dedicated, ass-licking fans in the world! They own every variation of every record she's ever put out, they know every song by heart backwards, they own all kinds of ridiculous memorabilia. As you said earlier, there is just a huge protion of her audience that would give her a standing ovation if she were wheeled out onstage, farted "Rhiannon," and left. I don't think these fans would somehow falter in their undying devotion if she pulled out "Nightbird" or "Bella Donna" or "Storms."

All that time??? Man, did they even have long playing albums back then??

If one really is excited about the prospect of seeing Stevie and is deflated by a comment of mine on an internet message board, then I doubt the strength of their excitement to begin with. I'm on exactly the same side as that giddy Aussie, it's just that I wanna see it good and I don't wanna flush $6,000.00 only to be disappointed.

Of course I did. I love Stevie. She is my favorite artist of all time. Which is why I want her to sing songs like "Sable on Blonde" live.Truth be told, there are so many songs that, to me, are utter perfection in their studio versions, that I'm happy she's never performed them live.
But I express all of these opinions from the angle that I'm much more of a fan of recordings than live performances. For me, the "magic" comes from being alone with my headphones on, listening to the albums, and connecting with the songs in a private way. Being surrounded by hundreds or thousands of other people draws me out of the moment and my enjoyment of the music suffers.
So it doesn't disappoint me at all that she's never done "Sable On Blond" or "Battle Of The Dragon" or so many others, because I have my perfect little studio versions, which, in my mind, can't be topped.
If one really is excited about the prospect of seeing Stevie and is deflated by a comment of mine on an internet message board, then I doubt the strength of their excitement to begin with.
Again, if one's character is weak enough to be affected by stuff like this, it wasn't that strong to begin with.I know that's always the argument... "if someone is hurt by what I say, then too bad for them"... but what's wrong with having consideration for someone else's feelings? Life sucks the big one enough as it is, why not let people have something that brings them enjoyment without tainting it?
This isn't a good example at all, but in 1st or 2nd grade, my friend Mark went around telling everyone that Santa Claus wasn't real. Resulting in a lot of tears from our classmates and a lecture from our teacher.
I had already figured out for myself that "Santa" was in fact my mother and father, but I could tell that believing in Santa Claus made other kids happy, so I never said a word.
If something brings enjoyment to someone's life, I'd rather not be the one to piss on it for them.

This is priceless and oh so true. Another lemming reporting for duty.

I'm amazed that people are actually considering going to these. Me too! That's a whole lot of clams for just a few songs. Now if she was touring Japan, my dream vacation spot, I'd be booking a flight as we speak...:o

I'm glad this info is coming through before I put a bunch of charges on my credit card.
Of course it's great that fans in Australia will get to see Stevie. It would be nice for her to take the Gold Dust Tour around the world and please her fans.
But this orchestra thing is turning out to be nothing like I imagined. Which is my fault; I'm the eternal optimist. I thought I'd actually meet Stevie at the first AHI benefit when promised; I thought she was going to take chances in Vegas when she said the concert would be like nothing anyone's seen, etc.
I first read about this Melbourne Symphony idea in the SF Chronicle. The way it was written, it seemed like Stevie was going to rework her classics with an orchestra for a special performance. That led me to think she would actually play in a theater that was created for orchestras and was planning something very unique and special.
Instead, it is another arena tour with one concert offering a few songs with the symphony to make a DVD. And Stevie is now saying her typical "....you never know" when, as Neal has stated, we do know.
I highly doubt she will even do At Last or Sunday Kind of Love. She'll probably do HAEWAFY, Landslide, Beauty and the Beast, and maybe Circle Dance and Rhiannon with the orchestra, and that's it.
To me, the issue isn't about changing the setlist for this tour, it's why she won't go all out and make it something truly special: an elegant theater with quality of sound and an entire concert with all songs reworked to accomodate an orchestra.
I'm happy to wait for the DVD, which will be rerecorded after everyone goes home anyway.

Extremely well put.
I understand that this sort of thing is expensive and time consuming. However, doing something on that scale says something about an artist. It says that they believe their work is worthy of such a treatment. If she did this kind of thing, a great example of which is Joni Mitchell's Travelogue, the kind of respect generated by it might be of a different sort than she has ever managed to attain. It is the type of Bob Dylan stature to which she has always aspired. I'm disappointed that it isn't going to be on that grand scale because I would love to go see it in person, no matter the cost. I am more disappointed however, that she doesn't seem to think that her catalogue is worthy of such a grand statement. That package, not TISL, would be her true "masterpiece".

I wonder if she'd be more inclined to do something on that level if there weren't such time limitations on these proposals. Instead of having to put something together for just a handful of nights in Vegas, or having the MSO available to her for only one performance, maybe if she were in a situation where she could stay in one place and perform for a few weeks at a time, it might be different.
Then again, I also wonder if Stevie believes that she doesn't have enough wide-range appeal to successfully pull off something riskier than a standard classic rock shed tour with a setlist that will be automatically familiar to the audience.

Time limitations ? Dude. It's November. February 18th is four months away.
A professional orchestra can rehearse a full length symphony in a few weeks. I am sure an hour and a half of pop songs, in two keys tops, would be a five day rehearsal.
Paul Buckmaster or some such contemporary could rustle up arrangements of 15-18 songs in a similar amount of time. A few weeks tops. I just think she can't be bothered at this point. That's what bugs me. Although she may be warming up to do just that. It would be easier to predict the rain patterns in Portland.

Time limitations ? Dude. It's November. February 18th is four months away.I didn't mean limitations on rehearsal time... but rather on the amount of shows. She only did, what, five shows in Vegas? And she only has the MSO for one night. And, in both cases, she had/has to put together a show that will translate to a shed tour that quickly follows.
So what I was saying, is that maybe if they were multi-week engagements, without then having to adapt the show into something suitable for the sheds, she'd be more inclined to try something a little more different?
I don't know. Just a thought.
Although she may be warming up to do just that.True, and for all we know, she could be dipping her toes in the water, to gauge the reaction and see if there's any kind of serious interest in this type of show from her, beyond that of the die-hards.

True, and I suspect she made a shitload of cash for Vegas, which offset any of the cost for that prodcution.

Possible. And for all we know, the promoter might only have wanted her to do a short symphony set, in order to ensure more tickets sold. Who knows how booked that venue is ?

It looks that way. God knows she is a creature of habit, and the first Stormy Weather thing was 7-8 years ago. I think she is using Joni as a template, and working her way into it. And making someone else pay for the symphony, basically, which is smart.
Though, even with the die hards she could sell enough copies of such an extravaganza to make money. I mean, who the hell else bought the box set ?

Nice. I agree. I wish we could tell her, and she would listen. Especially the part about her thinking her catalogue isn't worthy of such a grand statement. It's hard to believe she would think that, but judging by her actions you kind of have to. Perhaps age and that career low made a bigger blow to her confidence than suspected. But she should know that she really does have the most loyal and forgiving fans. It's hard for me to believe that Stevie couldn't imagine and conceive of something spectacular. Honestly. Stevie's always been about big, otherworldly dreams. And fantasy concepts. And stuff. She's not just selling us short, she's selling her veryownself short.

Probably because whoever ponied up the cash for the dvd isn't convinced one without the hits would sell enough to make them the profit they want.
This way she gets to retread the act again and sell another friggin dvd in five years or whenever. If one sells with six symphony songs, the next time she cuts a deal on an entire symphony dvd, she will have proof people will buy it and therefore be able to demand a bigger cut of the money.

I'm not expecting anything unrealistic; I'd be happy with 'ROF' and 'TTM' (both of which would sound great with an orchestra, imho).
But for her to even imply 'EO17' and 'SB' might not work out, made me roll my eyes. But then again what doesn't...? :p
i think what she ment by this is not that they won't be played, but they won't be backed my orchestra...didn't the article say only like 7 songs would be backed by the orchestra?? At Last would be cool to see live!!!...I can't wait to hear more about this!!!:blob2:

I don't consider myself complacent... I'm just not unreasonable in my expectations or interested in shitting all over everything the woman does.
Stevie's touring Australia solo for the first time in 20 years, and she'll be performing a half dozen songs with a full orchestra backing... that's something out of the ordinary and worth being excited about.
I haven't noticed any of the Australian fans pissing or moaning.
I completely agree,
Im an aussie and im the one hopefully meeting her come this sat. I think it s damn fabulous that she has even thought about let alone agreed to tour here!! And with an orchestra that will be taped for dvd release!! friken woohoo guys!! Im going to be in the croed up the front for that! Nothing taking me away!
And since this is the photo discussion: i think the photo looks nice, she's smiling people, how many shots have her smiling??? huh? she looks more at ease and i LIKE that she hasn't demanded for her hair and make up to be perfect as per usual. So good on her for doing it and love it, a much more flattering pic to me!

No cutting- just stop with the straightening and maybe condition it. We've all seen her hair very beautiful-looking onstage, so I don't think it's at a point that it needs to be cut. We all have our own opinions though.

I honestly haven't cared for the way her hair looked since Enchanted.
