View Full Version : Futher thoughts on Street Angel

I've been listening to this album a lot lately, and I really like a lot of the songs on it, but as a whole, it leaves something to be desired. So, I was thinking...you know, this would be a kickass little album if about four of these songs weren't on here, and she'd stuck Thousand Days on there instead.
So, I came up with an alternate tracklist:
1. Blue Denim
2. Greta
3. Street Angel
4. Thousand Days
5. Listen to the Rain
6. Destiny
7. Love Is Like a River
8. Rose Garden
9. Maybe Love Will Change Your Mind
10. Just Like a Woman
The only song I really hate...and I mean, it absolutely disgusts me...is Unconditional Love. Docklands just doesn't sound like Stevie. And Kick It & Jane have potential, but as they are, neither one does anything for me.

Docklands just doesn't sound like Stevie.
That's why I really love 'Docklands.' It's a nice surprise and it doesn't fit her mold...no darkness, no mysticism. It's very fresh.
I like your tracklist. You got rid of the clunkers.

"Kick It" is one of my favorites on the album!
I've always loved this verse:
"It's a strange kind of love affair
A symphony of sorts
Strange kind of love affair
A declaration of war
No I won't be here tomorrow night
You won't see me smiling
Tomorrow when it's very dark, no crying..."

It should have been an EP.
1. Street Angel
2. Blue Denim
3. Just Like A Woman
4. Greta (original master reel mix, not the bad ersatz new wave on the album)
The rest can go rot.

That is a great verse. I think the song has potential, but as it is, it just doesn't grab be for some reason.

Having a Street Angel without Kick It is like having a Diss without a loathing of Street Angel - it's just not right, it's just not natural. Kick It is great, Thousand Days sucks.

Unconditional Love has to be the worst song she's ever recorded. Those lyrics! Arrrgh!!

It's definitely one of the most "rocking" songs on there. It's practically the only one.
That's the first song I liked. None of the others grabbed me except that one at first. Followed closely by JLAW, because I knew it already and liked the old version. All the rest had to grow on my like a fungus. The kind that rots the wood off of your fence where it is growing.

The first time I heard it, I was instantly struck by her terrible vocal. Then I focused on the horrid production. Then the lyrics. By the time I got around to actually listening to the lyrics, the song was having the same effect on me as ipecac syrup would.

It's hard to say, because it's only been in the last few months that I heard the whole album. Before that, the only songs I heard were the ones on Enchanted. Out of those, Street Angel was the one that grabbed me first.
When I actually heard the whole album...I think it was Greta. Listen to the Rain & Love Is Like a River, too...I'm not sure what to say about the lyrics of those two songs...they're horrible, but they're just so "Stevie," that I can't help but love them. :D

But it does rollick along, and I appreciate that.

So far I've only listened to a couple of tracks, but Blue Denim and Street Angel just blew me away. Blue Denim really, really reminds me of Trouble in Shangri La, just the structure of it, the sound, the general feel ... anyone think so?

TISL is really not holding up for me as time passes. "Fall From Grace", "I Miss You", "Trouble In Shangri-La", and "Planets of the Universe" are awesome. Everything else is a grade C and lower (most of it in the F territory).

That's why SA is on the top of my album list because it has the least amount of songs i hate on it. TISL would be # one if
A - Stevie left all the BN demos as was
B - This is wot the track list was:
01 - Trouble in Shangri La
02 - Candlebright [non butchered by You-Know-Who]
03 - Sorcerer [non butchered by You-Know-Who]
04 - Planets of the Universe
05 - Everyday
06 - Space Needle
07 - Love Changes
08 - I Miss You
09 - My Heart
10 - Bombay Sapphires
11 - Fall From Grace
12 - Love Is
But then SA would have been better with all the songs that didn't make it too :: ho hum ::

Well, it only has two clunkers as far as I'm concerned, and one of them would be fine if it weren't for the line "Can you write this for me, he says no you write your songs yourself."

To each his/her own, but IMO TISL has moments of sheer brilliance tempered by a generally solid album with one or two clunkers in there. Street Angel? Mediocrity all the way. Sure, I sing along to fun little ditties Live is Like a River and Kick It, but I prefer a darker Stevie, a more emotionally raw Stevie. That's all. I don't hate Street Angel, but I adore TISL.

Always the voice of reason. Let's break this down.
Street Angel
Blue Denim - Meh.
Greta - Ugh.
Street Angel - Lovely.
Docklands - Ugh.
Listen To the Rain - Oh, the pain.
Destiny - Cheese.
Unconditional Love - Oh, the horror.
Love Is Like A River - Unintelligible mediocity.
Rose Garden - Go get sloshed, Stevie. Don't subject us to your mid-life crisis "poor me" crap.
Maybe Love - Asslee Simpson could sing it and the effect would be the same.
Just Like A Woman - I loves it.
Kick It - Yes, kick this shit right on down the drain.
Jane - Ummm...Jason likes it.
Trouble In Shangri-La
Trouble In Shangri-La - Yowzer. Fantastic.
Candlebright - Okay. Nothing to crow over, but I love its placement after TISL.
Sorcerer - The Sheryl Crow mix is brilliant.
Planets of the Universe - Middling. The atmosphere of the extended version is tops, though, and the somewhat pilfered lyrics are great.
Every Day - Not any day.
Too Far From Texassssssssssssssss - Not far enough away.
That Made Me Stronger - What makes her stronger makes me ill.
It's Only Love - One of the best things she's ever recorded.
Love Changes - She wouldn't be Stevie if she didn't follow up an amazing tune with the musical equivalent of a root canal.
I Miss You - Great.
Bombay Sapphires - Pretty darn good. And I like Macy Gray on it. The outtake is ten times better, though.
Fall From Grace - Not a favorite, but it's not bad at all.
Love Is - Gag me.
TISL obviously wins in my book. :xoxo:

Blue Denim - Good tune, nice vocal at end
Greta - OK
Street Angel - haunting, eerie, GREAT!
Docklands - eh
Listen to the Rain - eh
Destiny - eh
Unconditional Love - eh
Love is Like a River - OK
Rose Garden - Good tune
Maybe Love - eh
Just Like a Woman - Good tune
Kick it - OK
Jane - OK
TISL - f*cking brilliant
Candlebright - great
Sorcerer - incredible
POTU - incredible
Every Day - blergh
TFFT - great (yes, that's what I said!)
That Made Me Stronger - eh
It's Only Love - f*cking brilliant (THank God someone else thinks so)
Love changes - eh
I Miss You - blergh
Bombay Sapphires - great
FFG - great (live versions incredible)
Love Is - incredible
So, when you say that Street Angel has the least hated songs on it for you & that's why you like the album better, I don't really think that way. I mean, I really HATE Every Day & I Miss You. BUT I still have an emotional response to them. Much of Street Angel is just...there. I just don't care much either way about most of those songs.
