View Full Version : "Just like the one-winged dove..."
I swear, every non-Stevie friend, coworker, and family member I know thinks that what the lyric is until I correct them. Anybody else find that, too? I guess I can see how it would sound like "one" to the uninitiated, but I always ask these people, "Seriously, did it ever occur to you that that doesn't make any sense...?"

Umm, I actually thought that was what she was singing for the longest time. I was only a casual Stevie fan back in the 80's, and wasn't a huge fan of this song. It really sounded to me like she was singing "one winged dove". I did think that was pretty f*cked up!

I have come up against this as well...many times, actually! And I am always left thinking...do these people REALLY pay attention to what they are singing?
It cracks me up!

Thank God for online lyrics sheets....
I used to hear things like "He was no more than a baby then... someday we'll kill him!" "Sometimes to be near you is to be your...A-hole!" in Eo17!
I'm still gonna swear to the day I die that it's "unable to feel you" and not "unable to hear you".

Rosie O'Donnell thought it was "one winged dove" also...remember when Stevie was a guest on her show - and Rosie kept pushing buttons at her desk that would cue up Stevie songs, and Rosie was singing along? She even held up one finger while she sang it.

To be honest, I too used to hear "one winged dove". Hey, I was ten when I first heard the song (I guess I was deaf the first nine years) and Stevie sounded pretty pissed off, you know, and I thought "gee, a one-winged dove wouldn't sound too happy either!"

Or how 'bout Deep Purple's "Smoke On The Water":
Smoke on the water, and fire in the sky..
has been heard as:
Slow motion Walter, the fire engine guy...

Really? I'm not immune to mis-heard lyrics myself (I can't even begin to tell you what I thought the words to "Seven Wonders" were before I finally looked them up!), but I find it very odd that this, which seems to be the most popular, isn't one of mine. Maybe I heard someone else sing it the right way early in my Stevie-fandom. Or maybe I'm just some idiot bird-savante whose kinship with our feathered friends goes beyond all conscious understanding...

Me, too. I was only 11 when it came out... I thought it was one winged dove for a long time. :o

I have a friend who was convined the name of the song was White Winged Dove. Her boyfriend told her it wasn't, but that he didn't know the name, so she called me. :D
And my boyfriend thought she was singing "sings a song, sounds like she's singing . . .coooo...cooo....cooo..."
Because that is what a bird would say!!

I just love the line in "Gold Dust Woman" where she sings...
"...pick up the pizzas & go home..."

Dominoes or Pizza Hut?
Neither...they both deliver, so there'd be no need to "pick them up". Had to have been some mom & pop shop.

Like I said, I was only a casual Stevie fan when this song came out, and I really didn't even care much for the song at the time.

The one I don't get is why she wants his liver, and why she'd give up her legs! You know, "Give to me your liver, take from me my legs".
