So I've been thinking --
What the heck is a "flaming wall", a la "my walls are flamin;"??
Other than the, ahem, potential sexual reference that I guess you could incur, anyone venture to guess what in the world she's talking about?
I've had 'Smile at You' in my head all day (the demo), and it just occurred to me that I have no idea what that means, LOL! And, she repeats it a lot, so it's got to have some significance, I would think...

maybe it was a "Rooms on Fire" reference...or, in context, she was so pissed that her house on on fire with anger

I've thought about this too and I think the same goes with Rooms On Fire...it's all about emotion. The "my walls are flamin" part, to me, describes just how mad/upset she is...she's fuming...hot!

In the context of the lyrics to 'Smile At You'
I have come to know
This world of changing faces
I can't fight the world,
I can't change it
So be true to me
My walls are flamin'
If she's so willing, little one
I won't be staying
I think she's in love, and she is hot for the guy...but he loves someone else. Not sure it is necessarily anger. I think it's much more of a burning desire.

Or walls as in the walls one puts up for self-preservation...not to let people get too close...and then every part of your being - real and metaphorically is so angry that it's ALL a-flamin'! LOL
BTW, I love that song Walls by Tom Petty. I love LB's part on it too!

when I heard this song for the firs time, my marriage was in the middle of breaking up (b/c he'd been having a 10 yr affair), and these lyrics and those of Everybody Finds Out seemed to take on that kind of meaning for me...the walls of my house were DEF on fire from anger at that time...after some space, I can see it could be from unrequited desire, tho

that's a good take on it as well.

It's the "be true to me" part before "my walls are flaming", that makes me think it's burning desires. She's not pissed...she wants him.

She is pissed. "If shes a willing little one, I won't be staying". I am mad at you, I won't stick around and put up with this. Leave the key and get out. I am flamin angry. I do not hear hot, intense, passionate desire..I hear anger. Especially in the demo.

She's not pissed...she wants him. Her first mistake was smiling at him. That would be attraction. Yeah he loves someone else.
However the song is kind of kooky.
"Go on save yourself
Leave the key here
You love someone else
I shouldn't be here."
Then why leave the key here? It's her place and she shouldn't be there? Whatever, Stevie. lol

maybe she's staying at his place :"leave the key here (and I'll let myself out)"

No wonder the SOTM on the Mirage Concert video ends like that

Wow, I'm sorry sorry to hear that. I can't even imagine what that must have been like for you... :distress:

thanks..it was a complete shock, and, like everything else in my life, Stevie and FM were there to get me thru it... SYW couldn't have been released at a more important time for me..but, I move through thing pretty quickly, and when I'm done, honey, I'm done...so....no time wasted there! :p
I got re-married last Halloween to my absolute soul mate, so everything happens for a reason!

Make no mistake about it, she's pissed. She's so pissed that she's saying she regrets it ALL - my first mistake was to smile at you (ie: I wish I'd never even MET you!)
"Go on save yourself

You love someone else
I shouldn't be here."

That verse has always bothered me, too. I reconciled it in my head as, "you love someone else, I shouldn't be [in this affair with you]."

Personally, I think it speaks volumes that a song about adultry shows up on an album after a certain someone is married....along with EFO....also along the lines of the same topic. ;)

One could say that the word "here" could mean, "here in this situation".
Also, I think that it's a little bit of both passion and anger. After all, it's really a thin line between the two. If she had no passion for the person, then there wouldn't be any anger that he has someone else that he loves.

don't ask me why but i always thought they were in a hotel lol
but thinking about it, i think the first 2 lines there they're at HER house
but the 2nd 2 are at another point in time they're at HIS place. you could also see it as Stevie saying the "You love someone else" and someone else is replying to her with the 'i shouldn't be here'\
but ya know it's STEVIE
that could be interpreted 101 different ways
and in 20 years she'll change the meaning

I think it's pretty much limited to uhm, er, the obvious.
She's trying to make Our Mystery Man, gee, who could it
possibly be, jealous. ("If SHE'S so willing, LITTLE one,
I won't be stayin'") This isn't a new song, by the way -
have you heard the "angry version" from way back?
STEVIE? ANGRY in "Everybody Finds Out"???
OH Puleeez.
Check out the angry version of "Smile At You" -
LINDSEY should have turned away and ran!

I think maybe it's one of those Double-Meaning things -
she's saying, "I shouldn't even be alive - and you know
why. I need to discover what the reason is and what
my purpose in life is, and this is a threat to that -
and to you - so save yourself, Lindsey, GO! (Leave the key here,
just in case...)
So she's saying "LEAVE! Run away! Now! While you CAN!
No matter WHAT else I SAY!
(Pssst - stay.)"
PLUS it rhymes!

Who says she's angry in EFO?
I don't think she is. I think she's being VERY condescending
isn't it funny that (presumably) SAY is still as relevant in 2003 as it was in the 70s

Uhmmmmm . . .
Personally, I kind of read this as:
"My first mistake
was to smile at you . . .
smile at you -
. . . :) ;) "
I think maybe she's calling herself "incorrigible."
So my honest opinion is the exact opposite -
Like Madonna said,
"Absolutely
no
. . . .regrets. . . ."
