Well shit. There's no since in being a die hard fan then if she only caters to not-so-big-fans.
I was thinking today that it is kinda sad that the only new things we get (minus cover songs) are ad-libs to hits.....and we go wild over them. Thank you Stevie for putting yourself out there for us! haha

Well stated. Plus if they are trying to raise money for the cause, last thing you
need is people changing the channel because they don't know the song or something. I know the "insert twirl here and insert high kick there" is not exactly new, but then again we usually go wild once she starts twirling or nails the
high kick don't we? I love the fact that she is going to be on television singing.

Why not? It's totally feasible. Any other artist would do it. Think about it, if Madonna were going on the Today show, do you think she'd sing Papa Don't Preach and Holiday? Hell no, she'd sing something new and something recent - just like almost any other singer/songwriter. If Stevie did sing Long Way To Go and Love Is, maybe, just maybe, some casual fan will hear them and think 'Gee, I've never heard these. Maybe I'll check out one of her albums and see what else this lady sings besides {insert any Stevie top 40 hit here}
But then....Stevie wouldn't be able to complain that 'nobody buys them anyway'....and then maybe she'd have to record another album....which is just so much work aparently.
Don't get me wrong. I love Stevie, and in my eyes, she can do no wrong, but that doesn't mean that she can hold my interest indefinitely....though I guess 20 years and running is a pretty long time....

:
When she comes out on stage with a leash, and two dinosaurs attached to it, I find it disappointing and lazy. She sticks with ONLY her comfort zone. It's boring. I can't think of too many other female artists her age or otherwise who have a repetoire that's so limited when they do gigs like this. "Stand Back" I enjoy. She'll do her little high kick/full body dry heave set to music/ thing and the crowd'll go hog wild. But "Landslide" needs the knacker's yard once and for all.

I never understood the assertion that Stand Back is her biggest uptempo hit. I'll concede that it may have charted higher or whatever, but it seems to me that in this day and age, and in the context of which of her songs have had staying power, Edge of Seventeen totally eclipses Stand Back.
I mean, just walk up to someone and sing "Just like the white wing dove, singsasongsoundslikeshessingin..." and a good 7 out of 10 folks will pick up the "ooh, ooh... oooh!" I don't think any part of Stand Back is nearly that accessible to the public, especially 21 years after it charted.
I dunno, call me crazy.. just seems to me that Edge of Seventeen has kind of ingrained itself in pop culture much more than Stand Back.

I totally agree. Edge of 17 has got to be her most recognizable solo song. And I thank School of Rock for introducing that song to my generation. Now, at least my friends from school know one of her songs!
Edge of 17, Landslide, and Dreams are what I hear most often on the radio. Oh, and I constantly hear Say You Will!

I completely disagree... "Stand Back" charted higher, true... but more so, it is played on both FM radio and satelite radio as much if not more than "Edge Of Seventeen".. i've been to dozens of clubs and bars that if you request "Stevie Nicks" will ONLY play 'Stand Back"... There is a reason why people start cheering and standing when they hear "Stand Back" being played live... and there's also a reason that of ALL of Stevie's solo songs, that "Stand Back" is the ONLY one she will consistantly perform with Fleetwood Mac...
So when you say that you don't think "Stand Back" is more accessible to the public than "Edge", that isn't really the case.. besides the release of "Bootylicious", which only contains that guitar riff, give me another example on how "Edge" is more accessible to the public than "Stand Back"

when Brett played with one helluva band, the "Alien Love Child" Steve Vai on guitar, the amazing Billy Sheehan on Bass & the much underappreciated but one hell of a drummer Gregg Bissonette on drums.
I still remember seeing the DLR show in 1986 and it STILL sticks in my mind as one of the very best concerts I ever saw (Cinderella opened and kicked mucho ass!!!)

I personally don't think Madge and La Nicks are even in the same category. Madonna is shock value with no real substance, IMO, I love her just the same, but to me, she can't stand up against Stevie. Icon?
Yeah, Stevie could do this or could do that...I'm so sick of hearing people say this and how she could do more rare songs or whatever...
pardon the attitude tonight (this isn't directed any you or anyone in particular)...I'm just sick of such negativity and condescending (sp?) remarks in every d**n post - it always turns to that - let the woman alone already

Yes, they were an incredible band. And let me just say that those DLR days were absolutely wild!!! Gregg Bissonette is a phenomenal drummer and he and his brother Matt (who took over for Billy Sheehan on bass in the DLR band in the late '80's) are still two of Brett's closest friends. Matt now plays bass for Rick Springfield and Brett played keyboards for Rick during his heyday back in the early 80's. I just saw Matt when when he was here in town with Rick earlier this month. My friend, Jennie DeVoe, a singer/songwriter who is now being managed by Stevie's former manager Paul Fishkin, opened Rick Springfield's show. The music biz is a very small world.

Comparing Stevie to Madonna is comparing chalk and cheese. They are 2 completely different performers. Not only different ages, but different philosophies about entertainment and the music industry. Stevie had her own element of "shock value" in her early days. As quoted by Mick, her "Rhiannon in those days was like an exorcism." So she very much was out for attention. She just wore her bustier and garters on the INSIDE. :p

You really can't compare the two (well, perhaps a brief moment in 1983 you could), but i was responding to the "well if Madonna can do it, then why not Stevie" comment in an earlier post... :wavey:

Hell no, she'd sing something new and something recent - just like almost any other singer/songwriter.For the recent Live 8, Madonna performed "Like A Prayer," "Music" and "Ray Of Light."
Hardly anything "new."
And while the latter two songs are among her more recent hits, it's due to the fact that Madonna actually has recent hits to choose from. Stevie doesn't.
Stevie's not going to be on the Today Show to drum up interest in her solo career. She's there to help raise money for the Hurricane victims. She should play "big hits."
(As a side note, and directed at no one in particular... it will never cease to amaze me how people who attend seven shows per tour and collect all the concert bootlegs, complain about being bored with setlists.
Well, of course you're bored with them... you've burned yourself out on them! Familiarity breeds contempt, folks.)

Oh, cripes. Well, maybe she'll sing it nude, standing on her head with an ice cream cone in both hands, or something.
On Live television!?
I don't think Stevie Nicks would ever, ever, ever in a million years
sing with an ice cream cone in both hands.
How would she play the air guitar???

For the recent Live 8, Madonna performed "Like A Prayer," "Music" and "Ray Of Light."
She should play "big hits."
very true... also, Stevie is not the type of performer to use a disaster benefit as a promo for her upcoming project.. now Madonna on the other hand ;)

That is great! I have met Brett several times on the past Mac tour. He is always so nice and funny. I am just wondering Krista are you from Colorado by any chance?
oh and Happy Birthday Brett! :woohoo:
:wavey: Hi Pattie,
Glad to hear that you were able to meet Brett on the FM tour. He is one of my favorite people on the planet. He has been so supportive of me and my music career over the years. I have had some serious health problems recently and his friendship has really been a lifeline. I have also gotten to know Jana Anderson and she is one of the most loving people I have ever met. We have been keeping in touch this summer and I have really been touched by her kindness and caring support. She is a beautiful person who lives out her Christian faith.
I don't live in Colorado, but man I wish I did! It is such a beautiful place -God's country. I am from Indiana. I think there is another Krista here on the Ledge board who lives in Kentucky.
Nice to meet you, Pattie! Take care!
All the best,
Krista :)

Never heard of this songs. They new or something?
I'm with you-Curtis!!!!
Can't she PLEASE do something else??? She has been writing songs for almost 40 years, nothing else in her collection she can choose????
I find this very FRUSTRATING!!
(And I still say Landslide is not appropriate, and Stand Back is about what?)
Perhaps I will miss this one

Bullsh*t. If people want to donate, they will donate, no matter the song. I think it's weird to think that Stevie performing "hits" will make more money and what-not.....and she does have more hits than Stand Back and Landslide. If she really really wanted to hit home with the viewers, Maybe Love, a single-although not a big one, would have been perfect, but that's out of her comfort zone.

Well playing hits will likely attract more viewers...so if more people, esp. just casual music fans are interested in the show, that means more donations

I doubt. There are viewers who watch the show everyday....and when a die-hard fan knows their beloved is on....they watch, too. The "in-betweeners" don't care....and the casual fans probably don't even know she will be on...and if they do, they don't know what she will be singing until the first note is played.....

Well to be honest...I tune into the Today show concerts sometimes...but if I see someone on there that I KIND OF like, but i'm not a "die hard fan" of , if they are playing a song I know and already like it's more likely I will stay on the channel...

I think it's obvious Curtis. She chose those songs according to a precise plan to make angry her fans who love to start again the same old "why is she singing those songs" ritual even when she goes to a benefit show.

I understand that fact that she has to play a well-known song. When artists perform on shows similar to the Today Show, they often play a well-known song and a new song because they are promoting a new CD. I know she's not promoting a new CD, but why can't she do the classic live song, "Stand Back" as well as something a little different such as "HAEWAFY"? As stated in other posts, this song would be a perfect tribute to the storm surviors as oppose the disaster-themed and much performed "Landslide".

I turn the channel.
Sorry, but it's the truth. And I'd bet a lot of other people do it, too... especially since damn-near everyone has a remote control. Gone are the days when you'd watch whoever came on the telly, simply because you didn't want to get up to change the channel.
Diehards are the only ones who plotz over obscure material from long-forgotten albums... everyone else wants you to play that song they always hear on the radio.

Honestly Stevie should just stay home. It is not hard to see why she wants to stop recording....everyone has something they want and it is impossible to please everyone.
Warner Brothers is heavily involved with this fundraiser....perhaps they told her what to sing? Or is it just easier to bash her again for trying to do something good?
Another thing...how do we even know this is what she is actually going to end up singing? If I ever found myself in the position where the majority of what Stevie did either disappointed or bored me, I would find a new interest.
I am happy that she is lending her name to the cause. She could sit on her ass in her beach house and do nothing. The fact of the matter is she is trying to help raise funds for a disaster...she is not there to promote herself, a new cd, or to make her hard core "fans" happy.

Well said Kelly...but you know us..we have to praise/complain cuz that is what we like to  do. Silly and petty? yes but we all love her just the same
I am just afraid that people are "over donor- over load" and have given to enough causes lately and won't be able, or won't want to give more money for yet, another relief effort.

I am sorry to hear about your health problems. I hope that you are doing better. I have a friend in Colorado who likes to check out new bands, artists, etc not as an agent just as a fan. I thought that if you played in that area that I would let her know. Good luck with your music!

Stevie Nicks is no Madonna... Madonna is an Icon and can turn horsecrap into liquid gold.. Always could, always will.. Stevie cannot and she knows this...
I personally don't think Madge and La Nicks are even in the same category. Madonna is shock value with no real substance, IMO, I love her just the same, but to me, she can't stand up against Stevie.
Comparing Stevie to Madonna is comparing chalk and cheese. They are 2 completely different performers. Not only different ages, but different philosophies about entertainment and the music industry.
You really can't compare the two (well, perhaps a brief moment in 1983 you could), but i was responding to the "well if Madonna can do it, then why not Stevie" comment in an earlier post...
For the recent Live 8, Madonna performed "Like A Prayer," "Music" and "Ray Of Light."
Hardly anything "new."
And while the latter two songs are among her more recent hits, it's due to the fact that Madonna actually has recent hits to choose from. Stevie doesn't.
It wasn't my intention to compare Stevie to Madonna - there really is no comparison. Different styles, ambitions, levels of determination and energy, etc... I simply chose Madonna for my comment because she was the first person that came to mind, and I had just finished looked at the thread about her new album cover. Golly.
And, I've gotta say, to no one in particular, but in fact to anyone who believes that negative criticism makes someone less of a fan - you are, quite simply, wrong. It is a fan's right to make choices and express opinions about the art they choose to admire. I find it very insulting - and I'm sure I'm not the only one insulted - when a negative opinion is deemed to be whining or complaining. It is even moreso insulting when someone who expresses a negative opinion is deemed to be less of a fan by their peers. As if there is a rank system or something. Blah. Blah. Blah. Whatever.
