To me, I always thought it was about Stevie thinking back, to her younger days (not that she was that old then, but you know). About when her family moved around all the time, being a gypsy... And can't see her bright eyes - meaning can't see that inner child of herself anymore, the bright eyes she once had, "I can't find you", etc...... yadda yadda... ;) But I guess that was just how the song fit for me. That's what's so great about her music - it can be for everyone.

Who knows what she actually meant, but this is one song that I read as about her & Robin and Kim & the baby.
I suppose there could be an additional meaning that she was dancing away from Lindsey while he wished for her, but I think the main meaning of that line is Robin. But who knows. Even if Stevie told us, how often has she changed the alleged truth behind a song.

The line about "she is dancing away from you now -she was just a wish" also always makes me think she was thinking back to her old self, her younger self, and then as the memories fade, her old self and that feeling are dancing away from her..... Again, probably just the spin it took in my mind. It's been my favorite of hers since it came out, like if you have a "life" song. Mine is Gypsy. Anyone else have a "life" song? Doesn't mean it's your favorite song, but it's one that always sort of sums up your life, or holds special to you and your life, always?

Nope - not just you. That's exactly how I've always interpreted it, too. I always thought it was about Stevie herself, thinking about her own life, and her life without Robin.

The song Gypsy isn't a real happy story. Gypsy is a lot about returning to San Francisco. And Gypsy was written when my best friend [Robin] died of Leukemia and uh ...about the fact that she wasn't going to see the rest of this: I still see your bright eyes, it was like she wasn't ...going to make it. And uh, I was like the lone gypsy ~ this was my best friend from when I was 15 and so I was a solo gypsy all of a sudden and it was very sad for me and that's sometimes when I write my very best songs.
