If you could read just one diary entry of Stevie's and have her explain it to you in full, which one day in her life would you ask to read about?

Great question....

I think I would want to know about the day that LB told her that K was pregnant the first time...I bet her journaling would match some of the lyrics of Thrown Down!

How about the day she and Lindsey first got it on? ;)

Although, seriously Stevie says she only kept a journal from the mid 70s.
I'd quite like to read about when she discovered she was pregnant and how that all unfolded. I know it's grim, but it's events like that that really shape people's characters. I think we'd learn a lot about Don Henley from that too.

Hmmm...this is tough, there are so many that I would love to read, but I'd say the day Stevie found out that Kristen was pregnant. Reading about when Stevie herself was expecting might be too depressing for me.

Yeah, in that Rolling Stone cover of them in bed together, with her cuddled up to him, it looks like a barnacle on a ship, she's so in comparison to Mick.

Maybe it's a morbid fascination, but I'd really like to know what the heck the attraction was. She says "one of the great loves of my life" etc. ... really? WHY, why, I want to know. My nosiness knows no bounds.

Oh, and this is in reference to another poster--about small women and very tall men: I'm 5'1" and weigh just over 100 lbs., and the most serious relationship I've ever had, which lasted five years, was with a guy who stood 6'5" tall and was nearly 200 lbs. I'd like to read about the day she decided to marry Kim. And/or the day they got divorced. Her only marriage, her only "child" too......that had to have been pretty major. Did she take care of the baby for months, or longer? Or was there a nanny or a relative of Robin's or Kim's? What it felt like to her to take care of the baby......all that kind of stuff. And I'd love to know what, if any, songs are about Kim, the baby (Michael, is it?), and that whole marriage and time in her life.

I didn't know Gypsy was about him. Anything specific that you've heard? I'd love to hear Stevie talk about that song. I have heard fans say it's about Robin. To me, I always thought it was about Stevie thinking back, to her younger days (not that she was that old then, but you know). About when her family moved around all the time, being a gypsy... And can't see her bright eyes - meaning can't see that inner child of herself anymore, the bright eyes she once had, "I can't find you", etc...... yadda yadda... ;) But I guess that was just how the song fit for me. That's what's so great about her music - it can be for everyone.

Matthew, that's it. Seems like there'd be songs written about him. A baby who loses his mother....very fairytale-ish in theme. The sad beginning part of a fairytale or something. I wonder if she ever sees Kim anymore, seeings as how we hear every now and then that she sees Matthew and stays in touch.

ahhh yes, but why?? it wasn't as if he had any REASON to be there.. "Stand Back" was done... according to Stevie, he worked on SB with her "and then drove out of her life"... but that isn't exactly accurate (much like everything else she talks about from that time)... so again, why was he there?? ;)

You really wan't them to have hooked up don't you?

Stand Back. That has regret written all over it.

I thought she wrote that on the way to her honeymoon though....??

not that i so much want them to have hooked up.. but Prince basically hooked up with every straight woman he worked with back in the early 80's... i would not be surprised if Stevie was yet another...

it seems awfully intimate for her to be in bed, while Prince is standing over her while she's asking for cough medicine.. dont cha think? ;)

I always thought the line "I still see your bright eyes..." was referencing, well, you know (and NO not every song is about him before someone comes on here and jumps all over what i've just said  ) I thought it was more like, "hey Lindsey, you still see me (your Gypsy)"

Who knows what she actually meant, but this is one song that I read as about her & Robin and Kim & the baby.
I suppose there could be an additional meaning that she was dancing away from Lindsey while he wished for her, but I think the main meaning of that line is Robin. But who knows. Even if Stevie told us, how often has she changed the alleged truth behind a song.

That's true. Does she remember anymore?

The line about "she is dancing away from you now -she was just a wish" also always makes me think she was thinking back to her old self, her younger self, and then as the memories fade, her old self and that feeling are dancing away from her..... Again, probably just the spin it took in my mind. It's been my favorite of hers since it came out, like if you have a "life" song. Mine is Gypsy. Anyone else have a "life" song? Doesn't mean it's your favorite song, but it's one that always sort of sums up your life, or holds special to you and your life, always?

I'm actually more interested in hearing about their very next encounter. There had to be tension and embarrassment and then some.
Folks, fill me in. Was Mick's wedding the next known time they were in the same place?Might have been. Plus in 1989 they all saw him because he came into the studio with all of them to do some tracks.

Nope - not just you. That's exactly how I've always interpreted it, too. I always thought it was about Stevie herself, thinking about her own life, and her life without Robin.

Here are some quotes from Stevie herself about Gypsy:

For me to be a gypsy; for me to write about the gypsy - and for me to live the life of a gypsy that I love - I sort of almost have to be almost cold and insensitive to be able to remain that gypsy. It's not easy to be a hippie-gypsy when you're rich and when you're a rock'n'roll star.
~Stevie Nicks, Jim Ladd Innerview, 1983

Gypsy is about um ...going back to the gypsy that I was prior to Fleetwood Mac.
~Stevie Nicks, Rock's Family Tree

Yes in my uh Doheny house - in my English house. I just uh.. I went through an experience that wasn't particularly pleasant and I moved out of my big English bedroom into the little back bedroom that was all...the lady that owned this house had put all this French wallpaper up that was flowers and it was beautifully, beautifully done. It's just a little tiny room and put my bed back on the floor, moved my JBLs [speakers] in there, all my plants... all my junk, everything I had into this tiny little room about as big as this sofa, you know and I just lived in there for about 3 months. And I, it was really like living back in my apartment before I joined Fleetwood Mac...it was ...I'm very comfortable living in one little room with my bed on the floor and kind of lace tacked up at the windows, you know.

[A place where you felt secure and safe or comfortable?] And back to me, back to ...you know, uh back to learning to live alone again. Back to the gypsy.
~Stevie Nicks, Jim Ladd Innerview, 1982

The song Gypsy isn't a real happy story. Gypsy is a lot about returning to San Francisco. And Gypsy was written when my best friend [Robin] died of Leukemia and uh ...about the fact that she wasn't going to see the rest of this: I still see your bright eyes, it was like she wasn't ...going to make it. And uh, I was like the lone gypsy ~ this was my best friend from when I was 15 and so I was a solo gypsy all of a sudden and it was very sad for me and that's sometimes when I write my very best songs.

Robin had been on the road with Fleetwood Mac for five years. As my speech therapist and also management, an incredibly efficient helper. I still miss your bright eyes ~ that's why we don't do it on stage ~ it's because it's really too hard for me to sing. Lightening strikes maybe once, maybe twice... that means one time in your life you find a very good friend, and maybe if you're incredibly lucky, you might find a second. It all comes down to you, means but you have to look very hard.
~Stevie Nicks, video interview for Fleetwood Mac's Greatest Hits (1988)

Does anyone have quotes where she talks about it being about Kim? That's the first I've ever heard this - and when I look at the lyrics of the song, I just can't see where. I'm not saying that interpretation is wrong. I just have never seen it.

If you could read just one diary entry of Stevie's and have her explain it to you in full, which one day in her life would you ask to read about?

Excellent question.

For me it would have to be the day she decided to check into Betty Ford. What was going through her head when she had that moment of clarity, realizing her days of drug abuse was slowly killing her.

Great choice. I'm sure it was a lot of anger, given past statements about the intervention and management people. Not to mention some embarrassment, having fallen off stages.

Actually, Stevie has specifically said in an interview that she never let anything happen between herself and Prince. I think it was in an Esquire or Details interview.

She did describe the cough medicine incident, and he made the trip up to her hotel room specifically to give her the cough medicine because he knew she was sick--he probably had other things in mind, though. :D He fed her the cough medicine from a spoon himself, and when Stevie asked for more, he said (it sounds rather dramatically) that he didn't want her to get hooked on yet another substance, and walked out. So he wasn't there very long.

I'd quite like to read about when she discovered she was pregnant and how that all unfolded. I know it's grim, but it's events like that that really shape people's characters. I think we'd learn a lot about Don Henley from that too.
