View Full Version : Make Your Own 1984 EP

Supposedly, Stevie was set to release a new album in 1984. The album was derailed when producer Jimmy Iovine either quit or was fired. We have never gotten a detailed story. Stevie said the songs felt like wearing a pair of shoes that didn’t fit, but it is a shame that they have been buried. There is at least enough quality material to create an EP. So let’s do just that! Make your own EP by referring to this list of songs that were made for the album. Choose five and only five. What results will surely be the most kick-ass EP ever.
All the King’s Horses
Are You Mine
At the Fair
Greta
Lady From the Mountain
Love Don’t Fail Me Now
Love is Like a River
It’s Not a Dream
Jimmy Come Back
Mabel Normand
Mirror Mirror
Night Gallery
Ooh, Ooh Baby
Prettiest Girl in the World
Rock a Bye Baby
Running Through the Garden
She Calls You Missing
She Loves Him Still

I’ll start!
Mirror Mirror I much prefer the earlier takes rather than what was released as a B-side. Despite their inferior sound quality, Stevie's voice is much wilder.
Running Through the Garden
Love Don’t Fail Me Now One of the best melodies of all these songs
She Calls You Missing This song is wicked. Intense.
She Loves Him Still Sinful that this achingly beautiful song was not released.

Cool topic! I really wish RAL could have turned out like this. It would have been a much darker album. I like almost all these outtakes, so this was hard for me. This EP would rock!
Lady From The Mountain - The best versions of this song are the RAL era versions. Sounds great in all its raspiness!
Love Don't Fail Me Now - This one is like a slow burn. It's really meloncholy, and I love it!
She Calls You Missing - This song is HARDCORE. Stevie sounds evil and scary. If this outtake would have been polished up, with some repairs to the lyrics, it would be even better.
Love Is Like A River - The instruments on this one remind me of "Eyes Without A Face" by Billy Idol (a big hit in '84), but not the music. Sounds really witchy, with a cool beat.
Mirror Mirror - Stevie tears this up on all the outtake versions! This song seriously rocks!
Runner-ups:
Running Through The Garden - Cool story to put to a song. I like how the lyrics are parallel to Stevie's life (at the time.)
Thousand Days - A frantic tune about Prince. Would have fit perfectly, also.
At The Fair - Interesting lyrics. Stevie does techno!
I hope Stevie releases these outtakes on some sort of official release someday!

Oh wow, NEVER knew that! I think of all those songs though, I have to go with:
Love Is Like A River
All The King's Horses - wonderful song, one of my faves
Running Through The Garden - ok, maybe I'm just a sucker for synth music, but I LOVE the 80s version almost more than the SYW version.
Night Gallery
She Loves Him Still - I agree with vermicious, it's tragic that this song was never released. Simply awesome.

Oopsi Daisy, gldstwmn. "Beautiful Ghost" is an OSOTM demo, "If Your Were My Love" was experimented with for Mirage and Street Angel, and I have "China Doll" labeled as being from 1980. But you can make any damn mix tape you want I suppose.
I have added Lady From the Mountain to the list.
I also would have added Gypsy Beggar....I really like this one.
Is this from the correct time period? Should it be added to the list? I don't have this song.

Regarding Gypsy Beggar...it sure sounds like a Rock A Little demo. Anyone else to confirm this?

Yes, I can. :]
Now, Beautiful Ghost doesn't sound like anything from TOSOTM sessions to me. The vocal and band don't sound like that era. Exactly how are we carbon dating these songs?

The piano and vocal certainly sound similar to the Rock A Little earthquake demo.

Also, not to be picky, sir but I've got a boot where Stevie and Lindsey and what certainly sounds like Mick and John are working through this song with Stevie on piano.
They also wonder if anyone has any pot.
It sounds like the Mirage era to me.

Yeah, this is true, it dates from 5/8/79, and Hernan Rojas is present as well. There is, however, a much longer, DRONING demo of this song that dates either from RAL or TOSOTM. The running time is 8:02. It's hard to tell the time period from her vocal on this one, but it's not as strong as most of her RAL vocals, and she sounds sad and tired.

Are you talking about the one with the nice baking vocals at the end by Sharon and Lori? I always thought the probelm with that demo (other than the quality) was just tape drag.
I just listened to 5/8/79 and it cracked me up.
Also, about If You Were My Love-There is a reel from 3/10/81 with Waddy and Jimmy Iovine talking to each other in the begining. It doesn't sound anything like the Mirage Version nor the tropical SA version. So it would appear that this song was in consideration for Bella Donna. Pity it hasn't made it on to a record yet.

You know, it could be tape drag. It's hard to tell with Stevie somtimes.
I never much cared for If You Were My Love, except for the version you mentioned recorded 3/10/81. That one is really nice.

When I first heard Dial The Number before we all got the storage unit demos, I didn't like the song. But I really couldn't get a feel for it from the demos I had previously heard. But once I heard a clear version, I fell in love with the song. Same with the alternate version of Maybe Love Will Change Your Mind. And I'll NEVER forget the first time I heard Julia in it's full glory. Love at first listen.

  Oh yes. Until those masters came out, the only copy of Julia I had was from a cassette I got in 1989. I had to turn the volume up all the way to hear what Stevie was singing, and even then I could barely make out the lyrics. I always thought Julia was so mysterious...and the opening lyrics are great!
Someone mentioned the reissue of Rock A Little... I really hope we get some word of these reissues very soon. I'll be disappointed if Rock A Little is not included. It will be great to finally get a CD release with the lyric pages printed in the correct order!
I wish Stevie would hold a focus group so we could give her our input about what demos and alternates to include with the reissues.

If only! In her heart, if she doesn't want to make any more records than she should definitely reissue all of her past releases and include all of the fabulous songs that were left off.

I know there are those who love that version, but, to my ears, it's just hideous. She doesn't even sound like she WANTS to sing it.
Maybe it's a document of one of Glyn Johns' production ideas that Stevie disliked, so she didn't even bother to sound like she cared.

I feel like a brand-new fan all over again, with nothing to trade! It's a cleansing feeling, but it takes some getting used to.

I don't like that SA take of If You Were My Love either... I described it once as sounding like someone ate the Bella Donna and Mirage versions, drank a pina colada, and puked them up together on the shores of The Bahamas. :woohoo:

I have to wonder if the record company pushed Stevie to go with Glyn Johns in order to avoid another Rock A Little type fiasco.

Sorry, but I'm pretty sure that "All The Beautiful Worlds" is a Wild Heart outtake. It sure sounds more like a WH outtake to me, atleast. Now I think that belonged on that album from the beginning.
