View Full Version : ~Favorite Stevie Quote~

I thought this would be an interesting thread to post :D

What's everyone's favorite quote from Stevie? It can be something endearing, adorable, emotional, funny, something that made you connect with her in some way, or something that helped understand who she is/what her music is all about, etc....

These two have always been very close to my heart:

"If you ever think that you don't matter... I want to tell you something... To me, you're the only thing in the whole world that matters..."
~Stevie address her audience at the US Festival

I have never once cried during a movie or anything (maybe cause i know its not real), but seeing this part of the concert made me bawl like a baby! (that & the end of the BD concert) It broke my heart to see how much she just wanted to jump into the arms of her audience....

[On what the definition of a "charmed hour" is] "The best hour. The best of all your life....It always will remain in your memory and always ring through your dreams, and be there when any people hurt you or bring you down, or you suffer, maybe. That haunted song will be there for you, because that's the Birds of Rhiannon. And that's what that was written about, is the Three Birds of Rhiannon, which always are there if you need them. And you may black out ~ and that's what they do ~ they just take the pain from you, and you wake up and it's all right. And that's the haunted song of Rhiannon... you have to know the story."
~Stevie Nicks, Jim Ladd Innerview, 1979

A family member of mine was dying during Christmas this year, and I was in alot of pain & I was holding in alot of anger & tears.... I was listening to a piano version of 'Rhiannon', and I actually did "black out" I could still hear all of the music, but when the song ended, I immediately woke up with tears streamming down my face.... I never felt more at peace

"I thought this would be good for me, because I write so many...like, intense, serious, dark songs....and it is up, and it starts out that way, but there's a definite eeriness to it, that I didn't even realize it until you were filming it, just now" (paraphrase)
"I can't live on just one...I'm a gemini"
"and if you want to do this, Stevie, I have to know, that...*shoot! I forgot the rest!* that you will be very very strong, and very...*something*"

I used to have this for my sig:
"And I do want to stay later than everybody else every night. And the others are burdened. They want to go home and sleep. And I don't understand 'go home and sleep.' "

Also I like:
"I can't carry that!" in reference to the velvet painting in the HBO concert

And of course the f*** with my people quote.

I love that one.... I can just see Chris, Mick, John, & Lindsey all falling asleep in the studio, and hyper, nocturnal little Stevie ready to work and sing her heart out

"I never go to the recording studio in jeans and tennis shoes. Ever. I always dress up, and I always look nice -and people will think, 'Well, she must have thought she was really going somewhere, 'cause look at the rest of you!' Because you know what? If you look like you don't care, what happens? You become an old shoe. And I will NEVER become an old shoe...to ANY of the men in my life, EVER!"

"I do have some mystical things - I have crystal balls and I have some beautiful things - that someone might look at and say, 'Well, that's kind of mystical of you.' But even if I wasn't Stevie Nicks, I would still have these things."

The Playboy Interview has always been one of my favorites. It is filled with great Stevie lines...

"I never tried to beat men; that's why I managed to do it."

"My ballet teacher believes that my head was cut off in another life, too."

"This sure is the fast lane, but I don't particularly want to die in the fast lane. I want to get there gracefully."

"I have a lot more important stuff to do than worry about whether people think that I'm a witch or not! I wear black because I like it - not because it's 'witchy'!"

"I had a bus pass - my dad was President of Greyhound, I could go anywhere, right? - I said, 'Fine, take the car and the dog - I've got a bus pass!'. So, Lindsey left and I go inside and on the radio it says, 'Greyhound buses, on strike, all over the United States!' and I'm going, 'oh no...I'm stuck!'"

"I am never, ever, ever, ever going to be on the cover of Vouge!"

"Me and Prince had a lot in common. Well, for one thing, we both like to wear black chiffon around the house."

I could go on and on...Stevie is SUCH a quotable gal...Livia and I quote her in our everyday discussions...LOL

Their's also one from a radio interview when she was promoting Bella Donna...it was something like:
Q. What do you think of yourself being a sex symbol
A. (Stevie goes on to explain that she's not too aware of it...*paraphrasing: "It's not like my friends say, 'come here you little sex symbol you.' "

Here are some of my faves. Yes, I know, I have alot of them.

Creem 7/77
"I'm not a heavy psychic weirdo. I just happen to love black and I love to dance. I hate seeing rock'n'roll ladies that stomp across the stage and that are so hardcore. It's so unfeminine. Being a sex symbol has never been my goal in life. I just happen to love beautiful flowing movements.

Arizona Republic-September 18, 1983
"Well, if I continue to be the same mealy-mouthed little person that I have been up until now I will never get anywhere in this world and I will have nothing. So a little bit of me is a little tiny bit harder. It has to be for me to survive in this world. Everybody else makes it that way for me."

Wildheart Interview with Jim Ladd-1983
"On my gravestone it's going to say, "Nobody is that cute." Because I don't think anybody is cute enough to carry a two hour show. I don't think anybody is cute enough to keep everybody interested for that long. I think that everybody needs help. I'm not going to sing on stage alone."

Wildheart Interview with Jim Ladd - 1983
"For me to be a gypsy, and for me to write about the gypsy, and for me to really live the life of the gypsy that I love, I sort of almost have to be cold and insensitive to be able to remain that gypsy. It's not easy to be a hippie gypsy when you're rich and when you're a rock and roll star."

Molly Meldrum Interview 1986
“I’m a rock and roll singer. I am not a model, I am not an actress. I will never ever be able to model for Vogue.(Q: Why not?) Because I’m only five foot one inches tall! And you know what I don’t care about being pretty that much. What I want to do is I want to sing to you!”

USA Today-October 16, 1991
"I love making people happy with music. I don't know what I'd do without that. You give up a lot to get a kingdom, but you get an awful lot back."

Timespace Interview ~ 1991
"It is amazing, I keep thinking one of these days someone is just going to grab one of my skirts and pull me right of off the stage and nobody ever does that. Know first of all that I'm a whole lot tougher than they think. And that the platform boots I wear would not be comfortable in their face and the tamborine that I'm usually carrying would not be comfortable around their neck."

Rolling Stone-September 22, 1994
"One of my favorite shows is Star Trek: The Next Genteration. I don't usually like science fiction. But I particularly like Capt. Jean-Luc Picard. When everytihng's closing in on me, I can go to my living room at home, put on my surround sound, and the whole room sounds like we're flying. I have the Enterprise at my fingertips."

The Morning Call-June 14, 1998
"It's such a rock star thing to send flowers. It's sick to send a $150.00 arrangement of flowers and think that that's going to make it ok. Nobody needs one of those. They are a pain."

there are a lot but my fav @ the moment is this one from an interview done in australia:

"You have to understand the really great thing about fleetwood mac is that from the first day we joined fleetwood mac we were handed a first-class airplane ticket and we were picked up in a long black limosine and it is that way today. We prefer and choose to travel in a very wonderful and luxurious way and it's really fun and we've always loved it and we are prepared to spend the money to travel like that because we simply enjoy it. Right? Right? In other words, we have never done the bus!"

it isn't so much what she said, as it was her tone/giggle during the "right? right?" segment at the end as seen here:

and very "disciplined!" I remember this interview (I believe it was w/ Jim Ladd)--she was talking about having a discussion about going solo w/ Jimmy Iovine, who would be her producer. The whole "little baby egg" vs. the "hardworking princess." LOL

Awww, Stevie is so cute. I like a lot of what has already been mentioned (and I loooooooove that Stevie likes Star Trek, even though I'm not a Star Trek fan, because it adds a bit of geekiness to her character which I thought was sadly lacking), but some that haven't been mentioned yet:

From Storytellers:
Fan: "Is your bathroom your sanctuary?"
Stevie: "Yea--if it's a big, beautiful bathroom. I don't write in little, crummy bathrooms."

When being interviewed by Rolling Stone in their millenium collector's edition about technological advancements she'd like to see in the future:
"I'd like to be beamed places." (again with the Star Trek!)

I can't remember what interview this was from, but Stevie said something to the interviewer (who I guess happened to be pretty cool and saw Stevie as really down-to-earth) like, "I think there are a lot of people who see me as an airhead. So when you write this article, could you say, 'by the way, she's not an airhead.'?" Yeah Stevie!

Yeah, me and a friend were watching that together and we laughed so hard. He said, "Yeah, I only hang out in bathrooms with a fabulous chaise." lol

The F*ck with my people one is definitely a favorite too. When I heard that I had to rewind it like 50 times because I thought it was so wild. I bet she doesn't remember it though.

Another of my favorites comes from a radio interview Stevie did in '98 with WMGK in Philly. The DJ asked her what her fans meant to her. I can't remember the whole quote although I do have it on tape, but she basically said, "What do my fans mean to me...well, my fans are everything to me..." Damn, I have to listen to that again.

Here's one that I just read recently that I love:

"You cannot make a mistake in art. So even if you think you've made the worst mistake in the world, you just sit down, take a deep breath, and realize that you cannot make a mistake. Even if you cannot fix what's happened, you can tell everyone that's exactly what you wanted."

Love. It.

I also adore:

:wavey: OMG! I had this quote taped to my wall & desk at school! I read it every time I became discouraged or unhhappy with a drawing/painting. Sometimes I would make a mistake, and think its the biggest piece of crap in the world.... Then my teacher would say "wow, that looks great! especially this part here...." & I'd say, "oh that, yeah, well I did that on purpose, you see..." I love it too!

More that I found...

Off the Record with Anita - 1981
(On whether she is afraid that a fan will ever hurt her)"I feel like I am protected. I'm not afraid. I love all the people too much. If they want to do anything to me they are making a mistake, because I adore all of them and I try to spend time with them and I try to sign all of the autographs and I get people very angry with me because I hang out. They're the reason I got to make this album, they're the reason I have this lovely dress, they're the reason I get boots made for me, they're the reason I get to do all the beautiful things in my life, and I don't think that they would ever want to hurt me. I would never turn them away."Whenever she says something sweet about her fans...I love it.

Wildheart Radio Interview - Boston July 5, 1983
(about Sharon)"She's like the engineer cause I'll go wake her up and say 'Sharon, I have an idea,' and Sharon will go 'well, you're crazy, but usually she doesn't disturb me unless it's important' and so Sharon has always been a real big help to me for songwriting because I can write the song but sometimes I cannot get it together to run up and down stairs, plug in the tape recorder and find a tape that doesn't have anything on it, figure out why the tape recorder doesn't work, why there isn't any batteries in the house in the middle of the night and I'm having a nervous breakdown because I know this is like an important epic song I'm trying to write here and nothing works."
Whenever I listen to this, it cracks me up!

Wildheart Interview with Jim Ladd - 1983
(Question: Why is it always someone else that is walking away in your songs, and not you?) "Probably because I am in love with the people that I write songs for. My love is donated and dedicated completely to my audience. You know when I walk out on stage, that's when I'm really me. When I walk home and go back into my hotel room, I don't even want to talk about anything else. In my heart, the love that I have for the people that I play for and write songs for... those kids, that I jump off the stage and attack security guards for and that they have meetings everyday saying don't hit anybody in front of Stevie, they matter so much to me that it is difficult for anything else to matter to me."
Aww..isn't that sweet?

Jim Ladd Interview ~ 1986
"I had no desire to be new or trendy or younger. I have no desire to change what I wear. I'm only wearing these spindly rhinestone boots for everybody else. I'm much more comfortable in my platform boots, which I have forty pairs of because they were made for my foot, you know, they were made for me. That's what I love. I love people that are really themselves and go right on being themselves no matter what anybody tells you because, you know, in the long run, you are going to be with yourself."
How true.

Rockline ~ 5/89
I basically am a rock n' roller. Tom Petty once said to me "Pop Star" and I ran across the room and if I didn't love him so much I would have strangled him. You couldn't say anything to me that would make more angry than to call me a pop star. Rock and Roll is where I belong and what I love and always has been since I was eighteen years old."
Haha! I just found this one! That's hilarious!

Ok..that's enough for now! Thanks AliP-your site made this much easier!

So now it's Halloween and just in case Stevie, in the wisdom of her years, has changed her mind...

"Believe me, when I stop touring, I'm going to have a huge garage sale. We're talking chiffon, chiffon, and more chiffon."

That's my favorite, and wouldn't I love to be at that garage sale.

 I love that one, too. That's from Landover 83 right? She cracks me up in that video.

These are my current favorites:

"Somewhere between the haunted and the, uh, and a little bit of Ginger Rogers is what try I do; you know, Fred Astaire is not there, so I get to completely Ginger-out by myself."

and

"So, if you're in the Haight 10 years from now and a blur of feathers and rhinestones whizzes past you on a rocket-powered wheelchair and someone goes, 'What was that?' you can say, 'Oh, that's Stevie.' "

Stevie, sometime in the late '70s, talking to a Director or somebody
like that, in the studio, before playing and singing the demo for
"Sisters of the Moon" -
". . . and I don't think we're going to be able to use it.
'cause I'M gonna use it! . . .
[sweet, girly voice ] ---> mmm-KAY???"

Then after the demo, everyone in the room is clearly floored,
but she goes, "PRETTY WEIRD, HUH!?" and laughs.

And, of course, the unforgettable,

"but what I seem to touch these days
just turns to gold;
and what I seem to want, well, you know,
I'll find a way.
For me, it's the only lie(f) that I've ever known -
and love is only one fine star away."

But for me the all-time best, for some reason, is,
"Hold on . . . the night is . . . coming. . . .
and the starling flew for days."

It's just so - Stevie!

And of course there's the classic,
"I read the name of it in a . . . just a . . . novel -
REALIZED it - sat down, 'bout ten minutes later,
wrote - RHIANNON! We THINK - - - she was a
goddess QUEEN - and that her MEMORY became
the MYTH . . . [mysterious gap] -
I definitely feel that there's a 'Presence! . . ."

The poor reporter must've been like, "YEAH can I have some of
that TOO???" :xoxo:

OH and there's also a great one from an interview on the Enchanted CD
Box Set - I'm sorta paraphrasing but this is close to it - I think this
is AWESOME advice for aspiring writers!

"And I SWEAR sometimes it seems like these words just come through me, from somebody else or from some . . . spirit-channel or something; as CRAZY-SOUNDING as that 'cause it's like . . .
I'm just SCRIBBLING just as FAST as I can and . . . you know, I never
just sit down and "write," you know . . . I hear all these people saying
'we're going to write from like, NINE to TWELVE;' 'we're making
an appointment to write;' we're gonna meet at NINE and
write;' we're gonna write!' an it's like I'm going,
'Are you insane!?' Because I cannot even . . . .
UNDERSTAND that!!!! . . . ."

There was one thing she said in an MTV interview around Tango about Halloween, and I paraphrase, "I didn't want to dress up as a hot dog or a box of Kleenex, I wanted to be a witch."

THIS is my all time favorite quote of stevies. Just hearing her say the words
"Hot dog" and "kleenex" is priceless! I think at "the nicks files" site They have that quote to listen to, if you havent heard it. Just the way she says it cracks me up all the time!

One of my favorite quotes I believe is from the Speak Easy interview: (Paraphrase) "Seems to me they are asking for the brownie blonde haired girl....and NO I won’t carry the equipment......."

i love the "thank you very much....Silver Springs is a great old song...we really appreciate it..." at the end of Silver Springs on "The Dance"....my Mom and I always say this part too, after we sing the song, and then laugh ourselves silly...hehe
