View Full Version : Stevie's best harmonies

Stevie's collaborators and admirers have often praised her talent for harmonizing. Jimmy Iovine called her "every bit as good as the Everly Brothers"; Tom Petty said she was an "amazing" harmony singer. What do you think are Stevie's best or most interesting harmonies -- either with herself or with others? (And regardless of what you think of the song.)
My picks:
1. Insider (one of her most chilling performances, especially the live version)
2. I'm So Afraid ("black as night...")
3. Second Hand News ("oh wouldn't you just let me go down and do my stuff...")
4. Over My Head (those echoing "over my head" lines)
5. Say You Love Me
6. Stop Draggin' My Heart Around (the whole chorus, we know now, she's singing harmony to Tom's lead)
7. Say Goodbye (so soft and beautiful)
8. Whenever I Call You Friend
9. Magnet & Steel
10. Sorcerer (demo with Lindsey)
I guess I think her best harmonies are when she's singing with someone else, though she has some beautiful self-harmonizing too. I guess it's just less noticeable.

I love her rehearsal of Wild Heart with the girls--I'm fairly certain I have it on video--I think she's doing a photo shoot or something (can't remember) but they all start singing (the clarity is horrendous). It sounds absolutely AMAZING. To me, other than with the obvious--Lindsey, Petty, Crow, and Henley--her harmonies with the girls are the best when they're rehearsing they're parts acapella.

I dont now, for me it's probably the chorus on Over My Head live from Tokyo in 1977. that's pretty amazing to me

10. Sorcerer (demo with Lindsey)
You picked out three of my absolute favourites - though I added "live" to Say Goodbye.
Also, Never Going Back Again, live on the SYW tour.
And -
Beautiful Child
Touched By An Angel (or is it the harmony line I add when I sing? )
Just the Wanting with Walter Egan
Hypnotized with Bob Welch
The Apartment Song with Tom Petty
Nomad with Lindsey
Designs of Love
Every track the two of them sing on Buckingham Nicks
Oh... I could go on and on and on. Stevie is one of the the greatest harmony singers around. The best description I ever read of her voice with Lindsey's was "she can wrap her voice around his like no one else." *Sigh*

Everything on TWH is amazing.
I'll add that I think the harmonies on Destiny are beautiful - but only the Street Angel version, not the demos or Enchanted versions.

I was so disappointed when I heard The Apartment Song with her. I think the vocal stinks. :(

Because they recorded it unplanned and in one take while she was visiting him.

Whenever I Call You Friend. Great vocal!
She really worked hard. Didn't Kenny drive her to tears to get that?
Poor Stevie. Sounds like it was worth it.
ON EDIT: Maybe this should be over on best vocals. The harmonies are good but I really love everything including the duet leads.
She really stands out. She's so good on this I sometimes forget it's Stevie.

You know, I have a terrible copy of it but it's one of my favorite rarities. Does anyone know where that comes from? I have an mp3 of the "Can't Go Back" demo they are playing in the background. I always thought it was the band playing in the background but it was really a tape. The mp3 I have is exact without stevie and the girls singing, that is. I often sing a long to it like karaoke but it's not the same without the harmonies. "I love you, I love you, I love you, I do... blame it on my wild heart".
Okay, my vote is for, and don't laugh at me, Greta. The last time she sings "I wonder what Greta would say" is such a great little harmony. It makes the song for me. And Beautiful Child... "I wait for you to say... just go" is great.
Oh,and I almost forgot. The new harmony she does in Go Your Own Way from The Dance. "packing up, shacking up's all you wanna do" is just brilliant. Almost like she's saying it back to him at the same time he's saying it to her.

Say Goodbye live. :woohoo:
Most definitely!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I also think though some may not like the actual song, her harmony on "Goldfish and the Ladybug" is stellar and fits so tightly.
Also, there is a version of Smile At You, where different verses are together at the same time and that is pretty cool.
Finally, I love the harmony of all three on Hold Me as well as the song.
Anyway - my $0.02

Oh Daddy as heard on the Rumours audio DVD.
Holy shit.
(It is the absolute best when she weaves between singing higher and lower than the lead singer. Her instincts in this department are indeed on par with the Everly's (and I'm a fanatic of them!). She's probably the only person I would say that about!)

Oh Daddy on the Rumours reissue blows my mind. I love love love that song to begin with, but the harmonies between her and Chris are magical. Why didn't they use that version?
