I was just watching her video collection today and decided to put my two cents in on what I like and don't like about her songs caught on film.
I guess you could say it's another poll for ya'll to enjoy and discuss.
BEST VIDEO: I Can't Wait
BEST DIRECTION: EVERYDAY
BEST EDITING: Sorcerer
PRETTIEST VIDEO: EVERYDAY
WORST VIDEO: Whole Lotta Trouble. My Gawd. What was she thinking?!?! The worst perfomance and live vocal ever. She says 'second'...well...every second! :distress:
WTF MOMENT: The whole lying on the floor with a fan acting all turette-like in Talk To Me.
BEST DANCING: I Can't Wait..with the tambo...not with the back-up peeps. Ah...and I like the ballet in IAF, too.
WORST DANCING: Talk To Me...in the hallway. GAG.
BEST TWIRL: Beginning and ending twirl of Stand Back
THAT? WAS TACKY: The ending to Rooms on Fire. It ruins it.
OSCAR WORTHY ACTING: Stand Back (Civil War Version)
BEST DUET VIDEO: SDMHA. Insider is kinda boring.
BEST WARDROBE: Everyday
WORST WARDROBE: Whole Lotta Trouble. Bag-freaking-lady
BEST HAIR AND MAKE-UP: If Anyone Falls
WORST HAIR AND MAKE-UP: Blue Denim
BEST LIGHTING: IYEDB
WORST LIGHTING: Edge of 17...she looked jaundiced
BEST MIC SCENE (in every freaking video almost): Stand Back "Like a Willow" part especially
SINGLE THAT SHOULD HAVE HAD A VIDEO: Planets of the Universe and Nightbird
SHOULD HAVE HAD A FAMOUS ACTOR: Rooms on Fire

I think Destiny Rules would have made a great video. I can just see Stevie twirling out on the beach in the moonlight and then looking up at a balcony (with Lindsey up there!) I think it would rock! I could make a cameo when Stevie sings "Like a diamond snake in a black sky"! :wavey:

The moment that stands out for me is the treadmill in Stand Back. Gotta Love that!
I happen to LOVE the chessy choreography in Talk to Me (especially when she is dancing in the hallway). What's cool about that is you don't usually get to see her to little routines so that was a treat, no matter how awful the moves are. She also looks gorgeous in that video.

My favorite video of Stevie's has always been Gypsy- her little twirl/dance thing at the end is so pretty. But that's FM and not what you're talking about. Oops. Very cool list, Curtis. So, to get back on topic, I Can't Wait is my favorite STEVIE video, too.

Best Video = Stand Back. Those cheesy dancers, that ridiculous treadmill, Stevie's hip shake (a la my avatar) and Stevie looks abso-fucking-lutely gorgeous in her black get-up!
It's campy without trying to be and for that I give it a gold star.

BEST VIDEO: Sometimes it's a Bitch. I HATE those ghastly close-ups, but I LOVE the old clips.
BEST DIRECTION: Sorcerer
BEST EDITING: Anything from Red Rocks
PRETTIEST VIDEO: I love her clothes in Everyday, but I don't like the song & those friggin rats on the dinner table ruin it for me. I'm throwing a Mac one in, so sue me  Gypsy.
WORST VIDEO: Whole Lotta Trouble. Agreed - I can't stand the song or the vid. Not a really a fan of the Blue Denim vid either.
WTF MOMENT: Although I love it dearly, the treadmill & the random spastic dancers in Stand Back.
BEST DANCING: Talk To Me - LOVE those silly steps in unison.
WORST DANCING: Rooms on Fire - the slow dancing does not look smooth at all, doesn't fit the song either
BEST TWIRL: Beginning and ending twirl of Stand Back - agreed
THAT? WAS TACKY: The full Edge video where he shakes her, and there's a doll, then the beach. Ugh, thank God that one never saw the light of day. And the part in Rooms on Fire when that chick in white (is that Stevie? Doesn't look like her) falls back into the flames.
OSCAR WORTHY ACTING: Stand Back (Civil War Version) - is there any other acting in any other video?
BEST DUET VIDEO: Insider all the way. So simple & beautiful
BEST WARDROBE: Everyday (pink dress)/Sorcerer (ivory cloak & boots)
WORST WARDROBE: Rooms on Fire - shoulder pads, anyone? :o
BEST HAIR AND MAKE-UP: Talk To Me. Everyday
WORST HAIR AND MAKE-UP: Blue Denim - agreed
BEST LIGHTING: IYEDB - agreed
WORST LIGHTING: Sometime's it's a Bitch - for the washed out bright white close-ups. Brutal.
BEST MIC SCENE: In I Can't Wait, when she sings into it "sometimes well she still believes him." and stares at the camera for like 5 seconds after without moving. Crap, is the mike in that shot? Oh well.
SINGLE THAT SHOULD HAVE HAD A VIDEO: POTU
SHOULD HAVE HAD A FAMOUS ACTOR: Replace the rats on the table in Everyday with a famous actor & Stevie could eat off of him. Matthew McConoghy (sp) perhaps?

BEST VIDEO: Stand Back. Great cheese.
BEST DIRECTION: Every Day.
BEST EDITING: Pffffft. Like I watched a Nicks video for the editing.
PRETTIEST VIDEO: Sorcerer.
WORST VIDEO: Every RAL video.
WTF MOMENT: Rats on the table in Every Day and the AWFUL lip synching in I Can't Wait.
BEST DANCING: Ummmm, beats me. She's no dancer, but her subtle sass in Stand Back is great.
WORST DANCING: Talk To Me. Blergh.
BEST TWIRL: Stand Back.
THAT? WAS TACKY: All of I Can't Wait. Oy vey.
OSCAR WORTHY ACTING: None.
BEST DUET VIDEO: Stop Draggin'.
BEST WARDROBE: Stand Back.
WORST WARDROBE: Rooms On Fire. That red potato sack did not suit her.
BEST HAIR AND MAKE-UP: Leather and Lace.
WORST HAIR AND MAKE-UP: Blue Denim.
BEST LIGHTING: Sorcerer.
WORST LIGHTING: Sometimes It's A Bitch. The light was so bright that she looked like Jacko.
BEST MIC SCENE (in every freaking video almost): Eh, beats me. Microphones in videos are uber-cheesy.
SINGLE THAT SHOULD HAVE HAD A VIDEO: Nightbird.
SHOULD HAVE HAD A FAMOUS ACTOR: Can't think of one.

I know - and she could put cool stuff like outtakes and the WH and other disc recording film. I swear it is almost like if anyone mentions something this cool, they will get fired. Instead, we have four reissues of Rumors  But, at least the last one had way cool alt versions/demos/jam sessions. Oh Well

Why am I not surprised I Can't Wait is a favorite video? Jacked up Stevie is always good entertainment for the masses.
Rooms on Fire: the best insight into Stevie of any video except Stand Back Civil War Version. It's almost a sequel to it. The ending sure is cheesy. Seems that part had a message Stevie wanted to convey, so I don't know how they could have changed it unless the costuming was redone to reflect a different era. A famous dude in that video would have been cool, but Stevie was close to being washed up then, so I don't think they could have gotten anyone good, unless the real life subject stepped up to the plate just for old times sake.
No way that was gonna happen at that time. Noooooo way.

BEST VIDEO: I Can't Wait
BEST DIRECTION: Every Day
BEST EDITING: Sorcerer
PRETTIEST VIDEO: Sorcerer
WORST VIDEO: As much as I hate to say it, Edge of Seventeen - but I think it's just because it was early in music videos and no one has ever seen a great quality version.
WTF MOMENT: Again, Edge of Seventeen when Stevie does the slight head tilt when she sees "the male lead" disappear - reminds me of my dog.
BEST DANCING: Stand Back
WORST DANCING: None that I can think of
BEST TWIRL: Stand Back
THAT? WAS TACKY: The breakdown of the dancers, especially the lone female, in Stand Back
OSCAR WORTHY ACTING: Stand Back (Civil War)
BEST DUET VIDEO: Insider
BEST WARDROBE: Sorcerer
WORST WARDROBE: Rooms On Fire - although I do love the pink outfit she wears when we see her on the balcony for 2 seconds
BEST HAIR AND MAKE-UP: Everyday
WORST HAIR AND MAKE-UP: Blue Denim
BEST LIGHTING: Sorcerer
WORST LIGHTING: Edge of Seventeen
BEST MIC SCENE (in every freaking video almost): Silver Springs - when she swings around to look at Lindsey
EDIT: posted this FM video without thinking about it. For solo, I'd say I Can't Wait when she does the hand jive.

It isn't even that I dislike the studio version of SS, it's that it is not a part of the album. People grew up listening to Rumours, not Rumours Revised, and it just completely f*cks up the flow. I hate it.

Rumours is ass backwards anyway. Side two should have been side one...and vice versa. I hate listening to the CD...Songbird before The Chain doesn't sound right, but back then they didn't think an album all on one side would ever exist. And I like the inclusion of Silver Spings. :p

Rooms on Fire: the best insight into Stevie of any videoI really hate that video because it has all the faults that Stevie's music had at the time: pomposity, overblown concept, annoying "stately" gestures bordering on the static, & the star herself is all dolled up campy-trampy -- combining the freakiest aspects of the Mae West character in "Myra Breckinridge" & Joan Crawford in "Flamingo Road."
If you view Stevie as a lushly Romantic heroine, a creature of passion & windswept emotions, tormented by the buffeting winds of Fate & her own fevered imagination, then I guess the video completely captures it. If, on the other hand, you see all that as more than a little silly, then "Rooms on Fire" may just strike you as a sort of post-dated artifact of sinking pop stardom.

uggh.. what a cheesy 80's video... the Civil War version really would have stood the test of time... but now, when you watch the official "Stand Back" video, it makes u wanna chuckle.. the backup dancers, the treadmill... could it be any gayer??

She was, truly, unlike any other pop/rock singer I had ever seen or heard, and that grandeur really appealled to me.
It's a side of Stevie that I still dig to this day (though I do recognize the camp-factor).
By the way... I thought one of the reasons you love "The Nightmare" so much, is that overly romantic, wind-swept, Bronte-esque vibe.

I don't understand the beginning with Mick and Sandy. Confuses me. :cool:One of the reasons I like Stevie's videos... especially "IAF," "Talk To Me" and "Every Day"... is that they're gauzy, romantic, surreal and generally lack any concrete narrative.
So it leaves the video, and the song itself, open for interpretation, rather than some hotshot video director hitting us over the head with what HE thinks the song is about.
So, I have no clue why Mick is dressed like a monk, and he and Stevie are walking past Sandy Stewart playing a massive organ (hmm, poor choice of words around these parts! :o )... but I like not knowing.
It appeals to the art lover in me (especially of the Surrealist, Romantic and Pre-Raphaelite movements).

WORST DANCING: Stevie & Lori's little arm-in-arm dance at the beginning of "WLT."
BEST TWIRL: "Stand Back"
THAT? WAS TACKY: The aforementioned Stevie/Lori dance.
OSCAR WORTHY ACTING: "Rooms On Fire"
(Adding my own here: )
RAZZY WORTHY ACTING: "Edge Of Seventeen"... of course, Stevie still exhibited more range than Pia Zadora, and SHE won an Oscar!
BEST DUET VIDEO: "Insider"
BEST WARDROBE: "Every Day"
WORST WARDROBE: "Blue Denim"
BEST HAIR AND MAKE-UP: "If Anyone Falls"
WORST HAIR AND MAKE-UP: "Blue Denim"
BEST LIGHTING: "Sorcerer"
WORST LIGHTING: "Sometimes It's A Bitch"
BEST MIC SCENE: "I Can't Wait"
SINGLE THAT SHOULD HAVE HAD A VIDEO: "Planets Of The Universe"
SHOULD HAVE HAD A FAMOUS ACTOR: I think Stevie should have been paired with Dennis Quaid in "Rooms On Fire."
Pia Zadora won an oscar??? For what? [guess I could go find it myself... but that is stunning and explains why she got any press at all]

The moment that stands out for me is the treadmill in Stand Back. Gotta Love that!
That, for me, is the WTF moment. How do you explain that cheese?

WHERE'S THE DVD???? I've also only seen a couple of her vids, and now that I've read all these comments, I wanna see them all!!!! Hopefully she won enough money gambling in Vegas, she'll consider being good to us fans.... hmmm, but that's not really her style is it??? She really does believe in "going her own way" and not paying close attention to her fans and what we demand of her....

Ditto for me. I'm wondering how everyone has seen all of her videos?
You should check into getting the "I Can't Wait" video collection - I bought mine on ebay, I think. It provides, like, 6 of her videos.
Many are also available for download on various sites, too.

Because I'm SO DAMNED OLD, that's how! I'm so old I can remember life BEFORE MTV existed. When MTV was invented, I was glued to it for the first 5 years. Believe it or not they used to JUST PLAY VIDEOS. I used to say it was just like the radio, only you could SEE it. So I got to see all of Stevie's videos brand-new as they first came out. I even saw the "world premiere" of I Can't Wait. :] *SIGH* I miss the old days. (*shakes cane at the whippersnappers*)
MTV was very cool when it first started... I remember it too... The little moon man and all. And it was exactly like listening to the radio, except watching it... nicely put. Were'nt they on a 12 hour cycle or 6 hour cycle in the beginning... so every 6 or 12 hours it repeaded itself until the next day (maybe it's still the same..I don't know). Cause I remember being able to time it to catch the vids I wanted to see again that same day or night.

Downloading just tends to give my computer viruses that I can't shake, so not doing that anymore.
I do have the I can't Wait collection, but it would be really nice to have them all! (I'm not greedy, really!)

BEST DUET VIDEO: Insider all the way. So simple & beautiful

I totally agree with you on that. The ending especially. There is so much going on with their emotions in those last few moments. Very subtle, but nonetheless very present. (If this can make sense.) Tom really looks vulnerable at the end of this video. It's like he was caught with his gaurd down or something.
I just rewatched it, and I kept thinking about the recent interview with Tom about how at first he and the Heartbreakers didn't know how to deal with Stevie when she approached him about writing her a song. They were sort of 'wary' of her but it only took a little while for them to realize how wonderful Stevie was and da da: he wrote her insider.
This video is so mellow and truthful. Excuse my actor training on this one, but Stevie and Tom don't make this video about performing for an audience, rather it's about the music, the moment and the truth of that moment. Tom said he and Stevie would always get together to sing and create harmonies and this video must have been what it was like when they did. That's why I love it so much.

Call me Masses! "Talk to Me" is my favorite Stevie video!
I really hate that video because it has all the faults that Stevie's music had at the time: pomposity, overblown concept, annoying "stately" gestures bordering on the static, & the star herself is all dolled up campy-trampy -- combining the freakiest aspects of the Mae West character in "Myra Breckinridge" & Joan Crawford in "Flamingo Road."
Sheer genius.

So, I have no clue why Mick is dressed like a monk
Low budget.
They didn't bother with a costume change. IAF was made the same day as Mick's video for IWYB. His costume is part of the medieval storyline and Stevie is wearing her same outfit at the end of that one, too.

Hey, Johnny - you didn't answer me. Again.Sorry, Amber. I was at work, and was just killing time when I posted my replies, and then we got busy again before I could come back to reply to yours.
(Of course, you'll probably scold me for replying to Curtis and David first. :p :xoxo: )
Wait - are you talking about that moment when the guy is shaking her, and doll falls, and then the part where she stares at him? Where it seems like the stare is supposed to have some kind of meaning, but really Stevie just looks blankely staring? Every time I see that I'm like "ooo, nice Stevie, really, very dramatic.  "That part and all of the other "storyline" parts.
The blank stare always reminds me of Julia Duffy's character on 'Wizards And Warriors,' who said that her mother, the queen, taught her to never make any facial gestures that could cause wrinkles.

Oh. I can't remember the other really Razzie parts, that one always just strikes me. It makes me laugh when I hear that one quote that some guy, the Gypsy video director, maybe? said she should be an actress. No. Not at all. I love Stevie, but a good actress she's not. :)

It would have been better if Lindsay came out of the mirror....HAH that would have made some ppl start talkin

EXCEPT

Whoa. That's way too many categories for me.
However...
I love, love, love Sometimes It's A Bitch because I adore all the old pictures and footage. I could watch that video for hours.
My favourite Stevie moment in a non-Stevie video is the dance with Lindsey in Gypsy. :o Sigh.
Favourite duet video: Insider (um, because someone didn't make a video for I Will Run To You. Ahem.)

CIVAL WAR STAND BACK....................narf!
falls into the "what were they thinking" catagory. One of Stevies better carrer moves was to put the axe down on that one.
also on the subject of the twirls on the Stand Back vid that was actually used, I can watch that all day.

Wow. I could not disagree more. I doubt it was pulled because Stevie thought it was a better career move.........it's all about protection baby.
Treadmill dancing Stevie is much cheesier than the Civil War version. I put that in a "what was she thinking" moment although i love it! :o

When I think of Stand Back, I just think of that luciously metallic orange lipstick! :woohoo:She looks a little lumpen, a little clutzy, during the treadmill scenes -- she doesn't have her usual grace when walking in her boots.
Also, those closeups when her permed hair is limp & wet . . . no good. You want to hand her a towel.
And the slow-mo photography during the ballet pirouette with Brad is shot the way it is to deliberately hide the fact that Stevie isn't quite up there with Cynthia Gregory. But whenever photography tries to hide something like that, it usually just winds up calling attention to the shortcoming. Best to avoid it entirely.
Other than that, "Stand Back" has a lot of great images & ideas.
