View Full Version : Stevie Performing "New Songs"

I dunno why, but I just felt the need to post this as a new thread cuz I want to go on the record as saying I'm so happy with all the new or new/old songs Stevie has been performing over the last couple of months.

There was speculation during the SYW tour about how comfortable she felt with performing new songs. And although many of the new songs she's been performing recently may not necessarily be new in the truest sense, I think she has done a smashing job performing them. She seems very comfortable doing them as well.

After the SYW shows, it's been a real breath of fresh air, a cool drink of water and a refreshing experience to see and hear these songs. Did I mention I think her vocal abilities on these songs have far outshined anything I could ever have hoped for? Last time we got this lucky was the Enchanted tour.

Am I feeling the love tonight or what?!
 :]

There.... I said it. ;)

I agree. Looking (and listening) back, she just was not up to par for many of the TISL & SYW shows. She seems to have a lot more energy this tour, looks happier & enjoys singing the new tunes. Her vocals sound stronger & she holds the notes longer. Seeing her now compared to then really puts it into perspective. And getting to hear & see her do different tunes is exciting & frecsh & new.

Don't get me wrong - I have NEVER been disappointed in a Stevie or Mac performance that I've seen personally. I have never walked out of a show & said "well that sucked." Yes, some were better than others, but none were bad, IMO. It's just that I think she's in top form right now, on scale with 97/98.

I just don't understand why she doesnt go deep into her catalogue and find good songs to perform instead of these two covers she's been doing. There are so many songs we will NEVER hear live and that sucks! :distress:

You should have attended the Mansfield '04 show with me, silly. :woohoo:

I'm pretty knocked out over Circle Dance and if she could do stuff like that on a more regular basis and maybe perform slightly different sets each night like 90% of other touring artists, I'd be very happy.

True - but it stands to reason the lesser songs from the set of the album being promoted are dropped for the lesser songs from the album currently being promoted. Now that she is not promoting a record, she is doing a cover, which IMO is the obscure BC moment of this tour  I also think the promoters of her concerts have a huge say in what she plays because she tours in such a big way. She implies this when she says in interviews that she has to play certain songs and no one ever lets her play any song she wants, etc. She said the only time they let her do that was at the Blockbuster Awards and she played FFG, which at the time was unknown, not the single, and which I think was a big risk for her.

But, I do wish she would exchange her hits like ROF and TTM for SDHA, etc.

I agree. It seems that Stevie has so much energy and passion during her shows these past 2 months and it is refreshing and makes me so happy for her because she really seems to be enjoying herself again. This is her life, after all and it looks like she's happy.

The question is then...what will happen to her set when Don is gone next week? Are more obsure songs emerging? Will she just keep the set she has now and add back the Vegas songs? There is nothing to promote, so what will we get?

When????

..and on the thread topic, I would prefer a much more retooled set list, but glad that Stevie is taking some risks this time around. It's enough to jazz me for seeing her later this summer. More importantly, I'm thrilled that she looks and sounds so great and seems to be rested and happy.

I came away from my last SYW show very depressed and I'm ready to erase that image with the Gold Dust Tour (what a stupid name) Stevie. :blob1:

Thanks, I had no idea. I thought the only time they sang together live was during Tom's Hard Promises tour.she showed up at one Petty gig on the "Southern Accents" tour in 1985 in Tempe AZ. She sang a bunch of cool stuff with them that night, like "Not Fade Away" & "Make It Better (Forget About Me)" & "Stop Dragging My Heart Around" & "I Need to Know." I wish I had been there. I think Sandy Naylor was there. I went to see Petty in L.A. right after that just in case Stevie showed up, but she didn't. Later in 1985, however, she did some songs with Petty at a couple of benefits that Don Henley & Jackson Browne put together, including "Stop Dragging My Heart Around" & "Don't Bring Me Down."

The Heartbreakers are the only band that knows how to play "Stop Dragging My Heart Around" really well because that's their song & their style. Steve Simels once said it was a rewrite of "Refugee," & stylistically & instrumentally, he's right. The solo bands Stevie has had through the years do it all wrong. It needs to be sinewy & slinky, & the solo bands just crash through it. It really needs Stan Lynch on drums, Howie Epstein on bass, Benmont Tench on B3 & Mike Campbell on guitar. That's the only way I've ever enjoyed the song. Same thing goes for "I Need to Know." when the Heartbreakers play it, it's "correct."

Also, I think she & Petty have done a few appearances together since the Fleetwood Mac reunion. They even did a TV show together from the White House.

Rickypt
06-15-2005, 04:31 PM
Thanks for that, David. I saw Petty in Tempe during the Hard Promises tour (my first rock concert actually, my mom took me :xoxo: ) It was highly rumored that Stevie would show up and people were screaming her name all night long. But it didn't happen.

I remember the White House show, but I don't recall that they sang together. I think she sang "Silent Night" (shudder) with the Heartbreakers backing her up.

I do now remember that she played a benefit show a couple years ago in LA, something about recording artists rights, and did SDMHA with TP.

I agree with you about her solo bands and the Petty songs.

I think she'll play it safe and basically redo the Vegas set. She'll add back FFG, Sorcerer, Landslide, HSML...maybe IAF (it can be done w/o Lori.) And I'm sure she'll probably throw out SYWBARARS and L&L and end the show with INTK and HAEWAFY.

If she does anything other than that, I'll be shocked. Shocked!

Well... the Enchanted set (particularly disk 3) and tour hooked me and turned me into a serious Nicks fan, so I guess I was just hoping that at some point she would do another tour and box set kinda like that and aimed more toward the serious fans. There were rumours about something like that just before the annoucement of the Vegas show dates. I know her record company prolly wouldn't go for it, but it seems like she keeps kind of hedging that way by adding Sara to SYW set and a few other gems for Vegas and 2 Voices. I was hoping if we showed enough interest somehow that we might be pleasantly surprised and rewarded. I honestly think we, as the core group of fans, can have an influence in this direction. The core group of fans were always of interest to the record company during the younger years of Fleetwood Mac... they were the bankroll.. they were the ones who ALWAYS bought whatever was released and the record company knew they could count on selling at least 400,000 albums, every time. (I read this in one of the many books published.) So.. that was my little hope and dream and prolly the main motivation behind starting a discussion about "new" songs. I know the record industry is not what it used to be and maybe they would never entertain that manner of thinking today, but one can only hope.

If there were another Enchanted type box set, I'd like to see remasters, demos or even redos of songs like Sara, Sister of the Moon, Storms, Sable on Blonde, If I Were You, Angel, That's Alright. And a tour with those songs added to the set list. It's do-able. I think Stevie's voice can handle it now. She could call the album: "To You - in the Front Row"

Ok ... :sorry:... I'll stop now. :D

Some of those songs were only performed once or twice, lucky you if you got to witness any of them being performed.
As for Nightbird, she only did that twice on TV never in concert to my knowledge.
I think the Enchanted tour was the best for rarities but really can't Stevie vary the set every night? Other bands can do it. She has enough material now that she could vary it every night of the tour (still including the hits) and still have a setlist of material everyone knows.
I can't say I'm that impressed by the inclusion of two covers on the current tour but it's a start I guess.

Do you know what shows in Australia Stevie appeared at with Tom (before she was deported)?Years ago, a bunch of us dug up a bunch of dates from the Dylan & Heartbreakers fans. I think Stevie was just around for about a week (roughly from Feb. 6 to Feb. 12).

Feb. 5 Athletic Park, Wellington New Zealand
Feb. 7 Mt Smart Stadium, Auckland New Zealand
Feb. 10 Entertainment Centre, Sydney New South Wales
Feb. 11 Entertainment Centre, Sydney New South Wales
Feb. 12 Entertainment Centre, Sydney New South Wales
Feb. 13 Entertainment Centre, Sydney New South Wales
Feb. 15 Memorial Drive, Adelaide South Australia
Feb. 17 Perth Entertainment Centre, Perth West Australia
Feb. 18 Perth Entertainment Centre, Perth West Australia
Feb. 20 Kooyong Stadium, Melbourne Victoria
Feb. 21 Kooyong Stadium, Melbourne, Victoria
Feb. 22 Kooyong Stadium, Melbourne, Victoria
Feb. 24 Entertainment Centre, Sydney, New South Wales
Feb. 25 Entertainment Centre, Sydney, New South Wales
Feb. 28 Lang Park, Brisbane, Queensland
March 1 Lang Park, Brisbane, Queensland
March 5 Nippon Budokan Hall, Japan
March 6 Castle Hall, Osaka Fu, Japan
March 8 Gymnasium, Nagoya, Japan
March 10 Nippon Budokan Hall, Japan

There are some boots with allegedly fantastic sound quality of several of these shows -- for example, "Live at the Entertainment Centre" Feb. 24 Sydney. But I don't know whether Stevie performed that night. I think she had already been sent home.

The Park Royal Hotel 2-06-86 is recorded. They're just jamming at the hotel bar in Wellington: 1. Trying to Get to You (Charlie Singleton/Rose McCoy) 2. Trying to Get to You (Charlie Singleton/Rose McCoy) 3. Various unidentified fragments -- Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Stevie Nicks and one of the backup singers (shared vocal), Benmont Tench (piano & shared vocal).

Also, some of the unreleased "Band of the Hand" recording sessions include Stevie: Feb. 9 -- Festival Studios, Sydney: 1. Band of the Hand (backed by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and the Queens Of Rhythm plus Stevie Nicks).

Stevie played guitar & sang on "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" at the Feb. 11 concert in Sydney -- the day after Mark Knopfler guested during the same encores at the same venue. You've probably heard that recording. What a missed opportunity for the annals of great live rock not to have released the film of Stevie "1986" Nicks, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers & Bob Dylan all shredding it on this classic song. You can have your Enchanted tour & your Shangri-La-Di-Da album -- THIS is transcendent music, personality & art.

Petty also performed at the Peace Sunday event at the Rose Bowl in June 1982, but he & Stevie didn't sing together.
