Who is Chanel? Is she talking about the designer, like the perfume she is wearing? Because she says "Oh, the scent I left... Chanel, Chanel". It seems kind of silly but I love the song. I just downloaded it from Mistaken Love (Thanks! :wavey: ) and I can't stop listening to this and Annabel Lee.

I love this song, too, and have spent way too much time trying to figure it out. I tend to lead towards the Chanel being the perfume (the scent I left does seem to fit). I do think this song is about Lindsey - it fits with many of the themes on TISL. The shore is there, pushing down walls (reminds me of Thrown Down a bit, which was a TISL demo), something she'd known before from her past, and the whole part about how she was not his... Anyway - this is the part that I don't really get:
Lady traveler
Leave the room the way it was
Well, the scent I left...
Well, they can't stand up in the darkness
Ooh, Chanel, Chanel
And ideas?

She'd like to be able to just close the door behind ther and go on with her life, but the scent that there's still in the room, bring her back in an instant to think once again to the intensity that there's between her and the guy, a feeling as deep as the Chanel scent that just doesn't go away. JMO :D

 I agree. She also mentions that she "leave(s) the room the way it was" and the only trace that she was ever there is the scent of her Chanel perfume....

The line "they can't stand up in the darkness" means two possible things to me. They are hidden, in the shadows..they can't be seen, they are trying NOT to be seen...goes along with NMB and EFO. Plus..the "leave the room the way it was" hints at covering it up, so no one will know.
Or it has a more sexual connotation as in their rendevous are at night...when they make love and then she is on her way, traveling again (Lady Traveler), leaving him with only the scent of her.
I agree it totally fits in with the vibe and theme of her TISL songs.

I think it's the character "Lily Chanel" from her favorite novel (can't think of it right now) but that's the name she travels under. If you noticed the limo line-up during the Dance tour, there were signs on all 5 limos. Stevie got into the one with the "LC" sign in the window, Mick in the "MF" and Lindsey in the "LB".

I like this song. It has an '80s quality that reminds me of Madonna's "Crazy for You".
But every time I hear it I hear "Rochelle, Rochelle" instead like on the Seinfeld episode.

There is only one Chanel. It's Coco Chanel, the designer. Her designs were very big in the deco 30's and if you ever go to Neiman's or Saks check out the boutiques and I think it will become quite apparent what Stevie loves about Chanel.

But there is also the perfume, which I believe must be Coco Chanel's, right? Not trying to be argumentative - I just think the notion of it being perfume makes sense when you consider it follews "well the scent I left..."

She could have bought a pair of boots in the 80's and been wasted looking at them and trying to tell some "they are Chanel ... Chanel"  Seriously, who knows, but I am not a huge fan of the song :distress:

Oh absolutely. There's more than one kind. I also think those sunglasses she is sporting in the Destiny Rules doc are Chanel. I'm just saying I think she's a Chanel fan overall.

I didn't know if she knew someone named Chanel. There is a girl at my school and that is her first name.

I love that song. I put that on a cd with If You Were My Love (FM version), All the Kings Horses, ...can't remember what else...but I love listening to them all together on one cd - sounds great! I love th way she sings it, not laid back, can't describe, know what I mean? "always a cha~ance...." and "I wake up in the middle of the ni~ight.." Love it. :)
When I first heard it I wondered if it was about Chanel, Coco Chanel. But the perfume did pop into my head, whether it's about Coco, or Stevie (wearing Chanel), or some other character she gets swept away with.
The part about where they can't stand up in the darkness, it makes me think how the men or man doesn't have the willpower to leave in the dark, when things get, well, "intimate" - they can't resist her.
Sounds like she won't put any of those songs on any future albums though, since they were stolen? Did you read one of the back=up singers say something about that?
