View Full Version : Dreams Remix by Deep Dish (??)

I think the new Dreams remix could be done by Deep Dish:

Do it with Madonna
May 27, 2005

The cheesy 1983 flick Flashdance wouldn't strike anyone as a hot commodity in an illegal smuggling ring. But if you were living in post-revolution Iran, such items were scarce.

For Sharam Tayebi, one-half of American house duo Deep Dish, procuring the film via an illegal bootleg was the catalyst for a successful music career. The group's latest single, Flashdance, pays homage to the film.

"When I was in Iran that music was very instrumental in my musical training,"

Tayebi says. "There wasn't that much stuff getting into the country right after the revolution. Whatever you got your hands on you listened to over and over and over again.

"The soundtrack and the movie were one of those things for me. I had a close connection with [them]."

Tayebi moved to Washington DC in 1985. In 1991, he met Ali "Dubfire" Shirazinia and formed Deep Dish. They stuck with the underground house culture, and it wasn't long before Madonna and Justin Timberlake were requesting their remixing services.

The Madonna connection even landed the duo a fashion gig with Donatella Versace.

"We did four shows for Versace," Tayebi says. "It was a very interesting experience, we learnt how that world worked, but we don't really want to go back any time soon."

The group's move to pop culture was cemented in 2002 when they were awarded a Grammy for their remix of Dido's single Thank You. Recently, though, MOR rock is attracting their attention.

On their new album, George Is On, they covered the Fleetwood Mac tune Dreams, even convincing Stevie Nicks to add her vocals to the dance interpretation.

"We sent it to them and they really liked it," Tayebi says. "One day we got a call that she wanted to do the vocals. We worked with [Nicks] for a couple of days in LA, it was a very surreal experience - hanging out with history."
All this genre hopping hasn't endeared Deep Dish to the house music purists.

Last year the pair committed DJ heresy by completely eliminating vinyl from their sets.

"We went 100 per cent CDs when touring last year," Tayebi says.

"It became a moot point to carry records because you could have the same record on CD, more of them and carry them all the time without having to check them in on aeroplanes. It sounds identical in a club, too. As far as the people are concerned you cannot tell the difference.

"A lot of DJs claim vinyl is warmer, but at three in the morning when everyone's drunk off their arse, do you think anyone is going to notice how warm or cold the sound is?

"No, they just want to have a good time."

If these people are that hot and work with that set (Madonna, Versace, Dido, etc.) then I predict a HUGE hit for her this Summer if they put it out there which they seemingly are going to do (see below) !!!!!!!!!!! I think it is only a matter of time before that mix gets picked up by house D.J.'s across the country. HOORAAYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D

Here are some more articles on them:

http://www.dancefrontdoor.co.uk/article4220.html

Say Hello undoubtedly sits among Deep Dish s finest moments. Already one of this summer s most anticipated singles, it s a further example of the Grammy-award winning duo s musical reach, and is perfectly timed to hit just before the band s second album, George Is On , is released in July. A major underground anthem, Say Hello is fast picking up mainstream support. The release is the follow-up to last year s Flashdance , the worldwide hit that reached No.3 in the UK singles chart and spent a further 5 months in the Top 75.

Ali 'Dubfire' Shirazinia and Sharam Tayebi have consistently proved themselves as two of dance music s most intriguing and uncompromising figures. They ve never allowed their music to be dictated by fads or trends - Deep Dish are just Deep Dish . There s no space for lazy pigeon-holing, they just make great music in their own inimitable style, and one that has attracted millions of fans the world over. From the start of their careers they ve shown that whether it s guitars or samplers, keyboards or drums, they re a musical tour de force beyond the restrictive genre confines of dance music .

Say Hello sees Anousheh Khalili return to the mic once more, her distinctive voice sitting atop Ali and Sharam s gloriously melodic chords and harmonies. The result is simply one of the most beautiful songs you ll hear this summer. Lyrically and musically, the track shows once more just how far Deep Dish s stratospheric talent can take them.

Fittingly, the remix package is one to be treasured. Angello & Ingrosso show further signs of world domination with a heavy electro-house mix; Chus & Ceballos give the original an Iberican twist, punctuated with acid stabs for those darker dancefloor moments; and Dylan Rhymes turns in a heavy breaks cut, brimming with 303 licks for a peak-time assault.

4 years since their last visit, 7 years since the last original album. We’re more than ready for the return of Ali “Dubfire” Shirazinia and Sharam Tayebi alias: Deep Dish. Masters of the remix, Deep Dish are renowned for taking everything from Madonna, Dido, Timberlake and P Diddy through to underground house music, ripping it apart and creating a hit. There is no disputing their talent in the studio, no argument of their skill behind the decks, but over the last 6 years we’d missed out on hearing much original work. Until Flash Dance:

Progressive bass lines, rock guitar and soulful vocals that when bought together created a tune of huge proportions, dragging rock electro to the main-room and creating an anthem across the world, that somehow, even with massive radio play, never sounded commercial. On July 18th, their first original album in 7 years is released and as my brief for this interview is to talk about the new album, I got to have an advance listen... It’s been well worth the wait!

It’s always hard to describe music and certainly to try to classify Deep Dish is even harder. Is it deep house? I’ve heard it called progressive? So I thought that would be my best starting point with Ali, “Progressive for me means something completely different to the 18 year olds worshipping Sasha and Digweed. It’s pushing the limits, taking risks, moving forward, taking your influences and then taking it to the next level, so yeah, if that’s your definition of progressive music.” That will do for a start, “we don’t like to be pigeon holed by journalists, part of the magic is to keep people guessing”.

I’ve just been listening to your new album, It’s been a long time coming!

Yeah, much too long! We just got stepped into gigging, it was around ’96 when we started traveling overseas and we got really excited and just wanted to see the world. We took on too many gigs, got into a routine of doing too many remixes; so many mix cds came our way. We needed to remind ourselves that we were artists first and foremost. That’s how we started and now we need to go back to our roots.

Are the songs on the album written recently or are they tunes that you’ve wanted to produce for a longtime?

There were a lot of ideas that we laid down, then returned to. Some that we completely changed, took in a new direction and then there were things that happened at the 11th hour when we were feeling really inspired musically. So a combination of all that I suppose.

Was “Flash Dance” the first track you came up with, or was it the track that came out the strongest?

Flash Dance was a fun thing to do about 2 and a half years ago and then we got amazing reactions to it. It came at a time when a lot of people were into progressive house music and being anal retentive and serious about their music. We were always serious about music but we also understood that you gotta have fun with it, and thought we’d inject something a little bit more fun into what was out there and at the same time do something musically different.

“Say Hello” is the next release off the album. Its huge in the UK right now sitting at No1 on the Buzz chart, No2 on the Cool Cuts chart and featuring heavily on the Essential Selection.

We played it all last summer in Ibiza, it seems to be starting to go the same road as Flash Dance. Being played by a lot of DJs, especially by the trance guys like Arman Van Burren, Teisto and Paul Van Dyke who have been hammering the original version, I was surprised until I actually heard them playing it out. They are playing it a far faster tempo of course!

Early tracks on the album like Floating and Are you Awake have deep melodic vocals, a down tempo, deep house sound, and are written to listen to at home, as well as for the dancefloor. In particular, In Love with a Friend has a distinctly trance like vocal.

Yeah, for me the vocals are reminiscent of Jesus and Mary Chain, where they were almost breathing the vocal rather than belting it out.

Sacramento really stood out on the album out of the deephouse tracks, with its slightly darker bassline and rockier vocals.

I love Sacramento, it has a real LA, west coast vibe, 60’s vibe.

Dreams I have to say I loved. I’m interested to see how this will play out on the dance floors, given it’s the only track on the album that’s not a full original. The cover of the Fleetwood Mac track is complete with vocals from Stevie Nicks, it’s a beautiful track.

Thanks, I’m not sure what version you have but there’s a lot more work being done on that as we speak. It’s going to be quite different.

It does very much stand apart from the other tracks with a definitively 80’s rock feel, truly beautiful vocals and of course deep basslines. It’s hard to pick the next big tune from the album.
Bagels, is a really fun deep house, electro track we wrote purely for the dance floor that has been getting a great response, Pete Tong and Nick French have been really into it. It follows what’s been happening with the electro sound.

There’s plenty of electro - Deep Dish style with rock vocals. Tracks like III, Bagels and Everybodies Wearing my Head combine the electro infused deep, dark sound alongside rock and harder beats. The rock theme really gets going with No Stopping for Nicotine.

That was a track we really wanted to rock out with, I always imagined performing it live with a band and have it really peak at the end.

As is the album, the name is pretty original too! “George is On” , I don’t get it?

Haha, it’s a term pilots use to describe when Auto Pilots is on. There’s no reference to George Bush, we just liked it, it’s thought provoking, we still haven’t really figured out how it connects to the album but there is a connection… just haven’t found it… but it sounds cool.

Throughout the album you get a real feel for the Deep Dish “sound”. Deep, dark, infused with electro, inspired by rock. Haunting, soulful, melodic vocals that have the melancholic feel of Deep Dish but are still somehow uplifting. Each track sounds good in its own right, all are distinctively different, yet the album overall is stamped with the signature sound of Deep Dish: a blend of 80’s inspired rock, electro fused deep dark house and fun vocal dancefloor hits. You have to wait till July 18th to have your listen, or check them out on their upcoming tour of Australia this June!

I just remember the excitement when POTU came out. I realize most of that was because Tracy Young was so hot then, but La Nicks is still a name. I think this new one is by a similarly hot name and people will recognize that song as opposed to POTU. I cannot WAIT to buy it and may actually go dancing just to hear it as opposed to dancing wildly and without peer judgement in my own home   You really totally made my morning and this has been a formerly crappy week  SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

I remember about 2 months ago I was in New Orleans at a club and they were playing tons of hard trance and techno without many vocals and everyone was dancing and having a good time, but ready for something they recognized and could sing along to. Then I heard it...that semi-rappish intro and heavy drums and then I heard Stevie come in and the crowd nearly lost it. I saw people from 18-50ish (seriously) dying over this song and singing every word. It was amazing...I felt like I was in an episode of Queer As Folk and having one of those surrealist moments...:)

Seriously, this could very well be the "Dreams Intro" for the Vegas shows.. it is definately a new vocal from her, which sounds awesome... Deep Dish has done some amazing remixes in the past and ALOT of their stuff make the clubs and the dance radio stations... only time will tell.. but how great would it be for Stevie to have another big dance hit to put her right back in the spotlight again?? This is awesome news... :woohoo:

I always wondered how great something by Armin Van Buuren, Paul Van Dyk, or ATB would sound if they worked with Stevie on something.. i think she has the perfect voice for trance music, as demonstrated by the Tracey Young "Planets" remix.... i wonder if she was ever approached by any of them... Hopefully if this "Dreams" remix is a success, this could turn out to be a whole new thing for her... There is such a huge market for this kind of music.. with her unique voice, she could be very successful, imo...

Oh great... so the arc of Stevie's career has to be the same as Cher and Tina Turner. If you recall, before their so-called reinventions, they were rock n' roll singers. But the gay clubs beckoned... and lo and behold... Euro dance pop divas! What I've always admired about la Nicks was that she did her own thing and she was/is/always will be the big-time rock n roll singer. I shudder at the thought of seeing her pull Brad Jeffries out of retirement!

I don't think Tina Turner would ever be considered a Euro dance pop diva... Cher, on the other hand built her career on changing her style of music constantly.. So, while the last thing we may have heard from her was a dance-pop style of music, i don't think that's how people will remember her...

As for Stevie, she's been consistantly doing the same type of music for over 30 years now.. I don't think a little change here and there to keep active and fresh in the music scene is such a bad thing... styles DO change over time..

I don't think Tina Turner would ever be considered a Euro dance pop diva...

I do. She went from serious R&B to rock to 80s pop, back to a little R&B for an album, then to Europop until she retired (resulting in that utterly lackluster Twenty-Four Seven album). She's an even bigger star in Europe than she is here.

Cher, on the other hand built her career on changing her style of music constantly.. So, while the last thing we may have heard from her was a dance-pop style of music, i don't think that's how people will remember her...

I think it's how she'll be remembered. You have to take into consideration that Believe gave her an entire new audience and that's the song and album that introduced her to millions of new fans, not to mention it was her most successful endeavor yet. Believe will always be what many, many people will think of when they hear Cher's name.

I suppose for 15-17 year olds that heard her on the radio for the very first time in 1999, that may be true... but for 99% of everyone else, i don't think that's the case...
Furthermore, if you had gone to any of her concerts from 1999-2004, you would know that as much as Cher may have broken through on the dance charts in the past few years, she still attracted a very similar crowd to those who attend Stevie/Mac concerts... you know, the same type of crowd who has no clue what kind of current music the performer they're seeing has been putting out as of late..

It was difficult to get a good listen to the track above the crowd noise, but it is clearly a new vocal and it was surprisingly faithful to the original melody which la Nicks hasn't sung live in over twenty years! However, call me cynical, but I suspect some vocoder-pitchy sorta action on the "ri-ight" high note. It just sounds strangely robotic to my ears. However, on the off chance that that's our Stevie hitting that note (effortlessly, I might add), I think Deep Dish should be congratulated for being able to coax it out of her!

I think she can still sing it. She just chooses not to sing it live, for whatever reason. It's about the same as the falsetto she sings on Sorcerer.

"It's only me who wants to" doesn't even sound like Stevie to me. It sounds like a different singer. But I hope I'm wrong; it would be a little thrill to hear her hitting those notes again!
The high "and what you had" sounds like it could be her, though...

See I was thinking the same way, but I didn't want to be the first to say it  At first I thought "ok they must have mixed the old vocals in somehow to make it sound fluent" and then I thought "wait a minute, with all this new technology they probably tweaked her voice a little" like how Tracy did on POTU, Stevie's voice is higher in that song...

But the Stevie in me wants to believe that she belted out the high notes herself, which I think she is more than capable of doing in the studio (just probably not well live)...you can tell when she sings higher it is a little more frail and weak, so I think she is doin it!

Either way of the turnout, it sounds great
