I just listened to this song for the first time in a while and remembered how much I love it. It's so simple and I think Stevie's vocal on it is great. I do notice a few vocal gymnastics here and there. It's just a sweet song and makes me want to be in love.
Any other IIWY fans?

Big If I Were You fan here. I haven't listened to Rock A Little in ages, but after talking about No Spoken Word last week and now this thread, I feel like telling my boss I have a headache so I can run home and have a listen.

Oh! I'm surrounded by Rock A Little-a-holics lately! It's raining RAL!!!! Wheeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!
Now, as for 'If I Were You', what could possibly beat that unbelievable bridge? "Well I believe that love is a living thing, born into our destinies, from a single moment of Inspiritation...and as It grows...it Changes our lives forever" all sung with the classic RAL growling vibrato, chock full of "wells!" and fully deserving of our worship.
I agree! Oh man, we could only wish...

RAL was a slow burn for me. I did not like it when I got it. But being a dyed-in-the-wool fan liking this album was a requirement for membership, right? Well, I used to walk a lot (well I still do) so I put it in my discman and listened to it on my walks for a week and then I liked it. It's like I forced myself to like it. Not really, but I figured if I listened it might grow on me, which it did. But some parts of that record show Stevie's voice and style in a not so flattering light IMO. Like, cringe worthily. :sorry: *ducks*
I agree, I think this would be a good live song for Stevie to do right now. It has a good tempo and I think would translate well to the stage.

We all know Lindsay (me) is a huge RAL fan but I can't say that IIWY is one of my favorites, although I do like it. I do however LOVE Some Become Strangers so it's so great to hear that someone else loves that song (even though she didn't write it). You have superb taste Garden State Girlie ;) Any other Stranger fans out there? Oh how I LOVE that song! It's also very personal and became a theme song through a break up a couple of years ago. To me the song is about being so close to someone and being in love and how suddenly you wake up one day and realize you are strangers. This is what it means to me anyway. And how about La Nicks attitude when she says "I don't really need this in my life. Why don't we forget about it" That's HOT.

I love If I Were You. I don't want to go into a debate again about how the last part of the song goes, but that's my favorite part. As it fades I keep turning the volume up higher and higher to hear it better. And strangely, I just saw that Stevie wrote it, or co-wrote it anyway. I didn't think she wrote this song...lyrically it's not very Stevie-ish except MAYBE the bridge, and DEFINITELY the end part. Anyway, definitely one of the high points of RAL, which in all honesty really does have a few low points (yes, I still cannot stand the title track).

In the Jim Ladd (dun dun dunnnnnnnn) Interview for RAL she said she wrote the "Well, I believe that love..." bridge part. But it's a Ladd interview so take it with a grain of salt. :p

there are parts of RAL that I'm not wild about too. however, I love rock a little...I guess it's the frailty in her voice. have you heard the at home demo where she talks about writing the song...I think the demo made me love the song even more.

Thank God, I finally have a little RAL (the song) support. This has always been a favorite of mine and what I love about it most is that it's almost an R & B song and has so much soul to it and it's quite different than a lot of her other material. It's also sooo sexy, the music and the lyrics ;) I also have a cd of The RAL writing process and how this song was inspired by the sound the waves crashing outside of her house at the beach made her house "Rock a little". She really wanted Mick's help on this one. And yes her voice is my favorite, Stevie frail voice. She sounds so wispy and vulnerable and I love the really low notes on "Say it was just like me"...And how about when she says really softly at the end "That is how songs are written Stories are told, rumours are started" I mean that is a classic Stevie line right there! I could go on and on but the point is I think RAL the song is a highlight of the album and I was shocked to hear that a lot of fans don't like this song :(

I hated RAL the song for years. One reason was that after Bella Donna and Wild Heart, I had an expectation of what a Stevie song named after the album would be. It's hard to describe, but Bella Donna and Wild Heart are sort of these dramatic epics that open the album (TISL being a return to that, which is why I love it sooooo much :xoxo: )
Then came Rock A Little, and the title song didn't even kick off the album, and on top of that, it was this sound I had never heard from Stevie and with quivering vocals. I remember thinking at the time, what on earth has happened to this woman's voice.
Anyway, I stopped listening to Stevie for several years not too long after RAL, mainly because of her lifeless performances during the OSOTM tour and FM Tango tour and my horror at Sometimes It's A Bitch. In fact, I missed the Street Angel era altogether.
I'm rambling, but the point is that the Enchanted box set gave me an opportunity to listen to a lot of Stevie's work with different ears and perspective, having taken several years "off". And I wound up loving RAL the song based on that experience.
That was a very long way to say I used to hate RAL and now I love it. :D

You go Gurl. I'm in RAL heaven, it's my fave period, album, tour, 'look', 'sound' etc. You name the Stevie subject, I can spin it to Rock a Little!
Now, you mention the title track...I love how her voice quavers on the first "it's about time Lily...." Even though I'm a guy I find myself sort of imitating that quavering effect too if I sing along to it (when no one else is listening of course, like when I'm driving alone).
I'm originally from Long Island, New York, and believe me in 1985 RAL was HOT there and all over the airwaves and Stevie was the undisputed Queen of rock, with Pat Benatar and Joan Jett as contenders. Just her hair alone was, as we say on Long Island, "Forgetaboutit"! My sisters class of '86 year book is full of nothing but Stevie hair. Even on some of the guys!
I REALLY like you! ;)

HELL YEAH! That makes me proud to be even born in 1986! LOL. Seriously though, RAL is my favorite of Stevie's albums. I really love all the songs, but actually "If I Were You" seems to be one of the weaker tracks to me. I love the title track, and yes it is very sexy. "Talk To Me" and "I Can't Wait" were two of the coolest singles that ever hit the airwaves in '86. "Sister Honey" is just downright funky (although I like the stripped down demo version a little better), "Imperial Hotel" and "No Spoken Word" are some of her best rock songs with some memorable lyrics as well. I used to not like "Some Become Strangers" and it took a few years ( ) to grow on me, but it is almost just as funky as "Sister Honey". From what I heard on all the RAL bootlegs I've heard, Stevie rocked HARD on that tour in '86, which makes it by far my favorite of all her tours. Just my 2 cents. :wavey:

The only song it took a little while to grow on me was The Nightmare. You go from that awesome first line and then it's like, meh. But now I really do enjoy the song (except the backing vocals at the end of the song...yikes). I think as a whole, it's a really good album

For all the demos and concerts I have of Stevie, I'm a bigger fan of the RAL era - she was just crazy and the music was crazy and it was just all...crazy! But it's like wow, Stevie can really rock out (even though she was the snorting machine).
My least favorite songs on RAL are "Imperial Hotel" and "No Spoken Word." And the reason why I put No Spoken Word is because I'm not a huge fan of the album version; rather like the tour version better (i.e. red rocks)
My top three faves are Sister Honey, If I Were You, and a tie between Rock a Little and Some Become Strangers. Someone has to like Sister Honey, cmon! I think it's a real fun song and it's catchy. I wish she would have used that song for the RAL tour. She could have done a little fun dance with the bass thumping part. :blob1:
But I do agree, If I Were You is a very good song, and fun to sing along to.

BIG 'Rock A Little' fan here... the album that kicked my love for Stevie into high-gear. Loved her raspy, damaged voice... loved the ultra-personal lyrics that I could somehow still relate to... loved the music... loved the weirdness... loved it, loved it, loved it!
By the way, I always thought "If I Were You" should have been a single. It's SO catchy, and such a great vocal from Stevie.

I am soooo excited today for all this RAL love. I know a lot of people don't like this period but it's my favorite. I guess I'm really just a rocker chick at heart and without a doubt this was Stevie's "rock out" period. I feel bad that it coincides with her being strung out on drugs but at the same time it's the period in her career when she took the most chances (intentionally or not) and let lose and to me that makes her human. Sure, some things turned out to be not so pretty (the sometimes disastrous vocals, falling, erratic behavior, etc) but so what she's human and makes mistakes just like the rest of us. I guess in a way I can also relate to her more at this time with the craziness and outrageousness and high energy (if you knew me in person you would see this in me). Not only that but I love the hair, the outfits, and the whole energy of the album. It just fits me personally. The only song I do not like on the album is Imperial Hotel. I did not like Sister Honey at first but it has grown on me in a major way. I LOVE LOVE LOVE I Can't Wait, The Nightmare, Some Become Strangers, and Rock A Little. If I were you, I sing for things, HAEWAFY, Talk to Me, and No Spoken Word are all great songs.

While I do like RAL I wouldnt say it's her ROCK OUT PERIOD.. I would say that is Bella Donna...she was totally on fire then. It's weird cuz I think she did her RAL songs good on tour, but her classics seriously lacked--like the horrendous "Edge of 17" on Tour....
HAEWAFY was great on the RAL Tour, as well as "Talk to Me," "No Spoken Word" etc
Interesting time for her no doubt

here's my deal with RAL:
I Can't Wait: this song took a while to catch on, actually i hated it. now it's on my official 'cleaning my apartment and kicking much ass' mix.
RAL: if i never hear this song again, i'll be fine. i'm a hater :distress:
Sister Honey: ALRIGHT BAB-AY! love it to the MAXX. fave song on RAL.
ISFTT: lyrics are great, song is kind of sucking.
Imperial Hotel: i love this song so much, i almost booked Imperial over Flamingo in vegas. tied with ICW for second fave song.
Strangers: "i don't really need this in my life" saves this song for me.
TTM: umm, me and matt mock this song. "face.to.face.and.cheek.to.cheek."
Nightmare: this song kills this album for me. title track lifts the knife, this song plunges it into my soul.
IIWY: love it, love the bridge esp.
No Spoken Word: dirrty dirrty song... fabulous.
HAEWAFY: great last song, induces waterworks on an off day.

I love Rock a Little - It's the solo album I can pretty much listen to endlessly from start to finish. I've always loooved the title track - it brings me back 18 years when I first bought the album. I used to sit in the dark with my walkman on listening to it. I love the line.. "Where does she live? He says, oh, up there... somewhere..." Brilliant.
Even love Imperial Hotel, Some Become Strangers ("part of me used to love you, part of me still does..." and, YES! "I don't really need this in my life - why don't we forget about it?" and I don't even skip Sister Honey.
The rest of the songs I just adore. I think I'll be pulling out this album today in honour of this thread! Thanks for the suggestion!

I would say that is Bella Donna...she was totally on fire then. What do you mean by "on fire," Chris? To me, that's a funny way of describing the care & consistency she applied to her craft in the hopes of building an audience for her solo career.
It's weird cuz I think she did her RAL songs good on tour, but her classics seriously lacked--like the horrendous "Edge of 17" on Tour....Why was "Edge" horrendous on tour in 1986? Did you get to see a show in person?
I haven't enjoyed "Edge" live since. Ever.

Sure, some things turned out to be not so pretty (the sometimes disastrous vocals, falling, erratic behavior, etc)When did she fall? I mean which show specifically? Did anyone here see it? She didn't fall when I saw her.
I've never heard anyone say he/she saw Stevie fall in 1986, except for a troll or two on Usenet many years ago, & I suspect just concocting a florid fantasy there.

I think she fell off of the stage at an Australian show. I think Mick staid that in his book, which take that for what it is worth. I cannot remember now, but did she ever fess up to it. She said she fell in like 93 into a fireplace at a party because of the Klonopin and who the hell knows what else - but I seem to remember she talked about before then as well. But, again, I cannot remember for sure. Anyone else?

I remember Stevie's 1986 live version of "Edge" at the Shoreline Amphitheater quite well. During her walk along the front of the stage, she somehow got it in her head that the crowd was rushing and people were being hurt. When in fact no such thing was happening.
She kept screaming "get back!" and waving her hands. After a couple of those attempts, she abruptly stopped the song, scolded us, and stomped off the stage.
After about 10 minutes, she came back with her hair all wet and said that she was sorry she got mad, but didn't want to see us get hurt. Which was very thoughtful of her, but it was all in her imagination.
I've since read that something similar happened during the Wild Heart Tour.

Does anybody have any Rock a Little shows on video (besides Red Rocks) that wants to trade? Please message me if you do. Thanks :)
Also, who is the guy dueting with Stevie on L&L during the RAL tour? He has the most beautiful voice I think I've ever heard!! I was listening to the Dallas show from 86 this morning. Poor thing messes up and misses so many lines and is rambling on and on in between songs but I only wish I could decipher what she is saying. I love all the howling and yelling. Her voice is SO distinct and raw I go crazy I love it so much! The crowd seems to go the most crazy over I Can't Wait. I wish she would do it now but it wouldn't be the same anyway. My only wish is that I could go back in time to see one of these RAL shows :( Anybody go to the shows that wants to share their story?

I just posted one story right before this post. To be honest, Stevie scared me at this show. She was coked out of her mind, shouting gibberish during many of the songs, starting with Outside The Rain, shook her body around in weird ways, and then the screaming at the audience during Edge of Seventeen.
But I was still basically a kid and because I wasn't very aware of the effects of hard drugs, I didn't know what was going on.
I will take the 2005 Vegas Stevie over that experience any day.

She did to me DIRECTLY at the Baton Rouge RAL show. Sadly, it was in vain, because the crowd pushed me to the ground. Oh Well, I was like 19 so who cared  That show was incredible though. She was ON FIRE and it was pretty apparent she was high, but she was still good and missed a few things, but not that many. We had passes for a meet and greet, but she never showed

I don't regret seeing Stevie in any of her states because I feel like I've witnessed a great life and career with all its ups and downs. Although I admittedly gave up on her from about 1990 to 1996 other than buying Street Angel and playing it only once.

My friend and I rushed the stage - we where close anyway. We were standing there and people were literally trying to climb over me as I am very tall. I was holding her hand and started to fall. She saw it and sort of turned her hand to try and help me but that was futile because she would have fallen. So, I just sort of let go and fell. Interestingly, her ring almost came off in my hand - which would have horrfying  I got up and everything was okay as the security was really controlling the crowd after that. It all happened in like two seconds but she was cool about it I think because I was - not that we discussed it or anything  I just sort of winked at her or something like that. Now that I think about it, this was over 19 years ago  so I am sure some of the details are lost

I think I rambled yesterday about giving up on Stevie for a number of years. First there was her shockingly lifeless performances during OSOTM Tour and the Tango Tour where she seemed like just a shell of the woman and artist I had obsessed about during my childhood.
Then came Timespace and I absolutely hated --and continue to hate, sorry--the "new" songs. In particular, I detested Desert Angel. At the time I was fiercely against the Gulf War and being young and idealistic (in fact, just not very bright), I made everything an "us" vs. "them" thing, and even though Stevie was just trying to support the troops, I got all political about it.
Street Angel--I just didn't give it a chance. And while I doubt I will change my mind much on the album (and yes, I plan to give it another try soon), I regret missing her on tour that year based on the comments I've read recently.
Basically that whole time period was my snotty early 20's, when I gave up on baseball because it was too commercial and meaningless, dumped friends because I thought they were shallow, etc. Thought I was cool because I was an "activist". A period that I don't look back on fondly, but it was what it was.
But in March, 1997, I read on Nicksfix that Stevie was going to play some songs at a Don Henley benefit concert in Phoenix and the kid in me took over and drove down to hear her sing 4 songs. And the rest is history; I fell in love with her all over again.

I could never imagine "giving up" on an artist that I love as much as Stevie but I understand if you were young and had your reasons. My favorite song on RAL is "Imperial Hotel." I can't believe more people don't like this song! Does anyone if this song was written for/about Benmont Tench?? I thought I read that somewhere, but can't remember exactly.
I have never been a fan of "The Nightmare" but have just recently developed a fondness for it. The music is total crap, but the lyrics are amazing, imo. She has a knack for writing songs that relate well to people's lives, but everything about the lyrics in "The Nightmare" is so true, imo. My favorite lyric is " That was when the dream took her prisoner, And she knew the dream was over, But the nightmare was not over, Still some call that a dream"
Pure brilliance, if you ask me. :D
Does anyone have any suggestions about who the "him" is in the lyric, "she wants him to fight, anytime, anywhere. She wants him to stand up, she wants him to win?"

Stevie often said that he was the best singer in the band and she would jokingly say "he is even better than I am" She also used to gush about his good looks (if I am thinking about the same person) - she used to say "Ladies, it is sooooooooooo hard to sing to him every night"

So funny how everyone is touched by her differently. The first I heard Stevie I was 11 - and Stop Dragging My Heart Around and Leather and Lace were big radio hits. And I do remember just adoring them both - really feeling something different about her voice. I loved it. But I had no idea who she was, or that she was from FM. And the next year or so, I heard Gypsy and adored that - but I was like 11 and 12. I didn't make a connection. It wasn't until FM came to my city (Montreal at the time) in '87 that I was like, Oh my God - this is the singer that I have loved, and Oh my God - I couldn't take my eyes off her. I don't think I even registered the others on the stage. I didn't even own TITN at the time - but when the show was announced, there was just something that compelled me to go (don't ask - I can't explain this. It's very bizarre. I even bought a ticket for my friend to come with me). And that was it - after that show, I bought every FM album, and every Stevie solo album, and spent the better part of the next 18 months searching for Buckingham-Nicks. I can still remember the feeling when, at a record collectibles show, after flipping through every single solitary box of albums.... I found a MINT copy. My heart stopped. I couldn't get home to play it fast enough. I closed my bedroom door, put it on, and I don't think I breathed until the final note ended.
The rest... is some pretty great history...
