Ok, so i just got in some shows from one of my trades today, and i got two upgraded shows from the "Enchanted" tour... I'm listening to the Woodstock show right now and it's just incredible.. i am stunned at how much power Stevie has lost in her voice since just 1998...Not only that, but she was hitting all the high notes and had perfect tone.. ... what happened between 1998 and 2001 that caused such a dramatic change??? i just don't understand it.. :distress: :(

Probably menopause or "pre" menopause. I know from experience what pre-menopause can do to your voice. In fact, any female singer can be hampered monthly. Vocal chords retain water just like other muscle tissue at "that time of the month."

Kelly's right - one of her best performances in years. Spot on - the setlist, the vocal, the performance, the venue - perfection!
BTW - I tend to agree - I don't know if it's just aging, or if she's being more cautious with her voice as of late, but generally there is a marked difference in the power of her vocals between 97/98 to 01/03/05. IMO (and Diss's too. :D )

 I totally agree. There's no mistaking this. And I don't know about the menopause excuse. I don't think it ravages your vocal chords to that extent. Stevie has gotten WAY more nasaly in the past couple of years; I'm sure her damaged septum doesn't help matters either.

Hello! I've been saying that since 2001.
'94-'98 (or '00) is my favorite era of her voice. Listen to Edge of Seventeen from the Woodstock show, more specifically the yell at the end of the bridge. That note that she hits, however intentional or not, is shocking. What happened in 2001 is a mystery to me and it kind of depresses me.

It is very hard to quit... i used to smoke, so i definately know how it is.. it's not just the lack of nicotine that you have to get used to, but also the oral fixation involved as well.. it is very much a nervous habit.. and if you don't replace that with something else, that urge to smoke again becomes very strong.. some people eat, or chew gum... me, i suck on breathsavers :p

I don't think Stevie is smoking again. In Vegas, she was holding out all her notes to the end of each phrase. That kind of vocal longevity is the first thing to go when you smoke.
I think she's just getting old. AND- she never really took good care of voice anyways. A women's voice is at its peak in the 40's and sometimes into the 50's. I think she's in the midst of a vocal decline. However, I think if she gets rest and is fresh, her voice reflects it. Just look at the difference in vocal quality from "Sara" on the second leg of SYW tour  to her Vegas voice. I think 135 dates really did a number on her.

Well, she was smoking on the SYW....at least during the sound checks. Brit saw her once and I know ppl who work at Mellon Arena see her smoke a couple, too. Whether she does now, I don't know.

Regarding her smoking, who cares if she has a few here and there. It's HER choice. I might question it if she went back to smoking multiple packs a day but give her a break. She's an artist and works her freakin tail off! So what if she wants to smoke. I mean I care about her health and all but after all this time if she does it in moderation I see no problem. And if that IS indeed what is affecting her voice (which I find hard to believe) than so be it. She gives us so much people, let her be.

Stevie was quite sick during the TISL tour and played too many shows in the SYW tour. She sounds great in the Vegas songs I've been able to hear.
If I'm not mistaken, wasn't the Woodstock show after a bit of a break from the Enchanted tour? I'm just thinking rest and health are big factors, plus as was sad earlier she's getting older.

Good points. Also the Woodstock show was taped for a Webcast (if memory serves), and we know she always puts forth a little more effort when the cameras are rolling!
But yeah, Liquid's right... :) She was in amazing voice in general that year. Further proof is currently available at http://www.angelfire.com/music6/thevault/, where mp3s of the 98 Tampa performance are posted. She sounds great on everything! I especially love "Twisted."

I am of the opinion that something was lost in her voice between '94-'97. The Dance/Enchanted voice was definitely not the voice of '94. I am so glad she started working with a vocal coach. Her voice has a smooth quality to it now that I really love. I've loved all the incarnations of her voice though. Who says Stevie never changes?

Also to add her SYW Tour Voice was much stronger than her TISL Tour voice in my opinion..Even in songs like Rhiannon...during the Trouble in Shangri La Tour even before the health problems she couldn't manage to get out the "Dreams" in "dreams unwind loves a state of mind..." it came out as "unwind loves a state of mind"

Her voice in 94 was stellar. It was good in 97, but changed in that the higher end was gone - though it was still very very good. And - she worked with a vocal coach on The Dance. In any event, I liked almost all periods of "the voice" -- my problem with her has always been sometimes she gets vocally lazy on stage, esp. in harmony. But, IMO she does not do it that often - so that is a rather petty gripe

Well, you're definately right about that... her voice was much deeper in 94/95 than it was after she quit smoking in '96... but the thing that remained the same between 94 and 98 was the "strength" in her voice... that's what impressed me most about listening to the Woodstick '98 show again (after not listening to it for awhile)... her tone was similar in 2001 as it was in '98, but she seemed to have lost the power behind her words...
it did bet better for SYW, however..

Wow - you think it was deep on the SA tour? I think she was high and clear, at least when I saw her and on the boots I have heard. To me, that marked the end of that style of singing. And - I think she still is great, but it is just different. But, to each his own

I think she was off of it because she was sooooo animated on that tour when compared to the TOSOTM show I saw. But, to answer your question, she into rehab prior to the release of the record. She said when sober she realized it was not that great and tried to fix it by adding Waddy in parts, but eventually had to just let it go, etc. So, she had been through rehab and was off of Klonopin prior to the tour.

I guess I am getting hooked on the unknown comparison. Do you mean lower and deeper than post 1994 or pre 1994. I disagree that it was lower than on The Dance tour or thereafter, with the exception of B&B from Vegas, which she sung in a voice not heard since SA IMO - with the possible exception of Sleeping Angel from The Enchanted tour. I love her voice today! I don't care for her voice on the Timespace bootlegs that I have heard and I despise her voice on the Red Rocks DVD (her voice is way too high on most of those songs.... those are overdubs right?)
SYW/TISL I love!!! I have to admit that her voice is not for everyone on those records though. I love how her voice sounds so weathered though. I remember when I first heard the song SYW before the album came out I was screaming because I was so excited about how cool her voice sounded. Could it get any more raspy? I guess we will find out on her next album!
And I love God's Garden.

Okay, I'm in the minority here, but I just finished listening to the Saturday Las Vegas show (thank you SaraRhiannon!) and I have to say that Stevie sounds MUCH better today than she did at the Woodstock 98 show. Granted, she dodged a few high notes here and there at Vegas, but her performance was rock-solid- hardly a bad note. And she seems a lot more in control of her instrument today than she did back then. Not only was Stevie's pitch off a lot at Woodstock, but she really strains to hit some of the notes. And there is a sense that Stevie was very "present" in Vegas (the way she punctuates some words here and there...); by contrast she sounds kind of draggy and lazy at Woodstock. I can honestly say I can listen to the Vegas show without wincing at bum notes, which is really saying something.
Still, I am partial to Woodstock simply because I was there and I suffered through heavy rain, mud and Don Henley  to see Stevie. But the rain and mud weren't so bad. Ah, those were the days... Joni Mitchell and Stevie Nicks on the same bill!
