Lily Girl is now posted on sararhiannon.com. When I first heard the saxaphone I thought, "OH NO!" Not another song with Kenny G. This song ranks right up there with Dial the Number, Tragedy of One's Own Soul, and Don't Treat Me Like a Stranger. It just kind of drones on. But thanks for posting the song so now we get to hear it. :)

Sweet! I've never heard it, or any of the other songs you mentioned. Thank you!
i just downloaded it myself....listened to about thirty seconds of it and that was it. i think this is mislabeled as being a RAL demo when it's clearly an OSOTM demo. that's obviously kenny g who played on the OSOTM sessions. plus, the song sounds a little too slow and sappy for anything she would have been doing during the RAL period.

Ugh. I wanted to like it but couldn't. I have it on a CD of demos and such and I just skip it.

I heard it awhile back and just stashed the CD in a drawer. No need to listen to it more than once, and even then, that's once too much.

Isn't this really another version of Tragedy of One's Own Soul? The same music with a few bells and whistles and a large amount of the same words.

Yep, it's definitely not from RAL. The song was dated 4-15-88 on the reel.
As for the song itself? Blech. :sorry:

Man, I hated this era of Stevie. Whoever introduced her to Kenny G. should be locked away in isolation for a very, very long time.

Is this really the same woman who wrote "Landslide" and "Silver Springs"?
Honestly, I can't stand most of the OSOTM outtakes. They all sound pretty much like this to me -- meandering synth tracks, strained vocals and that hideous sax.
Still, thanks so much for putting it out there, SaraRhiannon...

Yes, the song is a piece of shit. But, you've got to give her a little bit of a break. All she was doing was taking prerecorded Kenny G tracks and adding cut-and-paste-journal lyrics and trying to make a melody out of it. I mean, come on- it's Kenny G fer chrissakes!!!
ALL of the songs from those Kenny G sessions suck ass. I think there are four of them, yes? "Tragedy of One's Own Soul" is just as abysmal as this one.
Despite the onset of Klonopin-itis, I think Stevie realized how shitty this stuff was and wisely moved on to IMO one of her best efforts, The Other Side of the Mirror.

. . . and at least she is trying to sing it in some melodic fashion. Plus, this is a demo and not a finished product. Thus, it should be judged as such. Finally, those lyrics are not that great - but to her credit, she apparently realized or there was some other reason for not using the song.

I wonder if Stevie would be mad that everyone has heard the demos of songs she thought were way to crappy to release. I would be, kinda. It's like someone catching you naked when you sooooo didn't want them to. Oh, and it's also like you look crappy naked at said time...

She has commented about this in the past - that she was really pissed when they were stolen/went missing/whatev & that she doesn't want fans to hear songs until she's completely finished with them.
But on the TISL tour she said about POTU "some of you may have heard this song a long time ago & that's OK" so I think she's kind of figures there's nothing she can do about it years after the fact.

She should be grateful to whoever stole them and leaked them out. She wouldn't have such a rabid and devoted fan base without them. I don't think she realizes how much her "underground" material has contributed to her career.

With few exceptions, I really don't like any of her demos. But for the most part, I've only listened to the ones that have completed versions released on albums. What I like about listening to the demos is discovering how much of the body of the final song Stevie came up with herself, i.e. the melody or the piano part of the song. Beauty and the Beast, Sisters of the Moon are a couple good examples. But most often when I hear a Stevie Nicks demo I generally prefer the final version MUCH more.

I've heard some that haven't been published - and I rarely like her demos, either. But I do like some of her Demos of things she has recorded. And? my favorite thing that hasn't been released (right? it hasn't?) is Cathouse blues. it's soooo darling.

Okay, so I finally downloaded "Lily Girl." I think y'all built me up and I wound up being disappointed, because I don't think it's as bad as you said. I like it more than "Desert Angel" and even "I Miss You." I still think it's bad, but I figure it probably isn't her worst demo. I think I like it more than "Don't Treat Me Like a Stranger."
:sorry: that I don't have unbridled hatred for it.

That's just it - I can't think of a demo of an unreleased song that I like. I dont' really have or have heard as many as most people, though. Uh...24 Karat comes to mind, She Calls You Missing....I think I heard...Juliet? and didn't really like it...oh, I like My Heart ok. not great, but I think it's releasable, with some work. I surely like it better than Silver Girl, and Illume, and, well, even better than a few of her published songs...the vocal is strainy in some parts, though, that would have to be worked out. Amber sucks a$$, but that was a long time ago...Cathouse blues is awesome, it should be released. :D

"Juliet" was officially released. Did you mean "Julia"? I like "My Heart" all right. I like her vocals on it for the most part. That's generally what it does for me 'cause I'm not so big on the music or lyrics. I agree that "Amber" isn't a good one.
But, "The Dealer" is one of my fave Stevie songs, even pitted against those that have been released. I'm also in love with "Belle Fleur" and "Julia," which I mentioned already. Aside from those, I like "Sanctuary" and "If You Were My Love" is okay. I think that's about it, though. There have been several (and I can't remember the names of them all) that I've downloaded and then just deleted because I heard them once and didn't really want to hear them again.

You could be right, I haven't heard those. I used to be totally salivacious about demos, when I realized how many there were, but after listening to some, I calmed down, b/c I realized that I don't usually like them that much.
Oh, I love the I Sing For the Things demo, but it is almost just like the regular song....

My most favorite demo ever ever ever is Without You. It is a Buckingham Nicks but so is Cathouse Blues so.... It is gorgeous and a real sweet love song. Lindsey and her vocals just make the entire song. Swoon.
Also, I really like She Loves Him Still and Space Needle.
If you have not heard those two, go find em. Sanctuary is cool and I remember this girl at one of the Enchanted shows I went to screamed like an idiot...."STEVIE..do Sanctuary"....Stevie was dumbfounded and I mean dumbfounded. It never laughed so hard in my life. I also think she seemed a little pissed and she just kept staring at this girl.
Other good demos..The Dealer, Julia, and My Heart. (shut up, I like My Heart)

"China Doll" is another must-hear demo, in addition to the ones GateandGarden already mentioned. It seems almost everbody likes this one, and for good reason -- it's beautiful.
On a related note, I've been rediscovering "Space Needle" lately. What a fascinating song. I don't like the chorus melody much, but the lyrics are some of Stevie's darkest and most intriguing ever.

Really?? All I listen to is demos these days. I've been oversaturated by the released stuff.
Among the brilliantest of the brilliant:
Mistaken Love (my all-time favourite)
Space Needle
Chanel Chanel
And the lesser-sos, albeit still brilliant:
The Dealer
Blue Lamp (omg - I can't even remember now if that's been released)
Something Exquisite
She Loves Him Still
My Heart (the words! Just the words!)
If You Ever Did Believe (was this released?)
Touched By an Angel (was this? God, my memory sucks)
City of Hope
All the Beautiful Worlds
And I know there are many others I am forgetting... She has a goldmine of demos.

That demo has some of my favorite Stevie lyrics...

"he said, I could hold you for dayyyyyss"
"He made love to me, with his eyes especially..."
Swoon. Eyes? LB
