I don't do well in scary movies. I'm too nervous and fidgety.
I saw "The Wedding Date" last night; I had low expectations for it, but the movie didn't even reach them. Debra Messing wasn't good at all. :( But at least Dermot Mulroney is cute. ;)
Tonight, I may finally be seeing "Finding Neverland." :blob2:

Mulroney is so short, I almost can't believe it.
There is nothing out there that I want to see right now, surprisingly. Everything looks like crap. They're showing Cabaret with Liza down the street, I might go see that later.

Haven't seen any horror movies lately, and I'm not a fan of horror movies, anyways. Although, my fave is Lost Boys, it's not too gory though, except that one part, and I usually fast forward through that. Ew. LOL
I've only seen 3 movies this year....
The Passion of the Christ
The Incredibles
In Good Company

He is on the short side, but I'm 5'2", so it could work. Plus, I love the scar on his lip. ;)
'Tis definitely the slow season for movies. Post-Oscar, pre-summer. :(

I can't believe you guys don't like scary movies! Oh man :distress: I saw The Grudge also and it came out on DVD on Tuesday so I have to buy it! I can't wait for the Ring Two to come out!! Anyone seen the Ring??

Ack, The Grudge. I don't usually do well with horror movies, but I wasn't feeling it at all. Granted, I only saw it because I'm a hardcore Buffy fan and Sarah Michelle Gellar was in it (just like how I only saw Darkness Falls because Emma Caulfield was in it and yes I'm still bitter that Joss had to kill her character).
The Ring, however. Hoshit. Freaked me out.
Nothing out right now really looks good, though. :\ My mom always wants to see lame movies, but I always want to see the stuff that looks good. Which is usually why I tend to gravitate toward indie films.
I dug The Grudge. It was incredibly lame and pretentious (they call it "non-linear storytelling" and I call it "showing-off"), but it had some truly chilling moments. That chick with her jaw missing scared the bejesus out of me. The original was better, though, same with The Ring.
Mainstream movies suck these days, moreso than ever.

Worst. "Scary". Movie.
It wasn't scary a bit. I actually fell asleep during it. It was just lame...nothing else to say about it.

The Ring was disappointing IMO, but the Japanese original Ringu is ace.
I think The Ring 2 (as in the American version) may be okay as it's directed by Hideo Nakata, who directed Ringu and Ringu 2. (He's also directing the remake of The Entity, which sounds promising).
Oh and I like The Grudge, even though it's exactly the same as the original, although in a way it works better in the Japanese language, but it's always good to see Ted Raimi.
I HATED Ringu 2, but I'm certain Ring 2 will at least have some redeemable qualities if Sissy signed on for it.
She has so many movies coming out this year that I can't keep up!

It doesn't seem like you guys like scary movies too much... A lot of them scare me! In a lot of movies though you can tell when stuff is going to happen, so you prepare yourself for it. But that's okay :D

Saying that I never understand why these movies need to be remade (well, it's obviously money, but you know what I mean).
American audiences are rather stupid, that's why. ;) They need everything spelled out for them, they can't handle any ambiguity or anything that requires thinking.

I was just reading a giant article on how, etc. Asian movies are marketed. American studios buy them, but with only a few exceptions don't market them properly - even movies that have won numerous awards, etc. The times they have marketed them, they have done really well. But i read a few cases in the article that just pointed to very inept studio bumbling - and that's also when they talked about the remakes - studio heads think that they need to be remade/changed to appeal to american audiences. But again, the few Asian films they have marketed have done very well.
Anyways. :wavey:

IMO American studios remake Asian and European movies, because they think US audiences can't stand reality as it is but need to see it filtered through famous actors' faces, glossy settings, plastified cinematography and possibly a reassuring ending. But at the end, they had to give up: Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon has been a huge international success, Zhang Yimou and Takeshi Kitano movies are still ignored by Academy but have found a public everywhere and after Lars Von Trier, Wong Kar-wai is going to have Nicole Kidman as star of his next film. Beware Hollywood...

They were all paranoid. Lars Von Trier uses politics like he uses religion, only as a narrative tool, and the movie was universal, probably he thought it was just funnier to set the story in America :D , but it could have been a little village in France or in Italy. Relax Roger, it's only a film, and a pretty good one.

And Nicole Kidman was *divine* in it. The whole cast was. Patricia Clarkson and her Doctrine of Stoicism scene was disturbing as all get out.

I saw Boogeyman on Friday. My friend and I were getting muscle cramps from being so tense. I could really relate to the kid in the beginning because I used to do the same thing with objects in my room that scared me. I couldn't even close my eyes if my closet door was open even a crack. The movie kind of tanked though. It didn't develope much or go anywhere, and when I finally saw the boogeyman I was like "That's it?" It was still 100 times better than "Darkness" though.
I love horror movies! Halloween is my favorite. I've seen it a million times and it still scares the crap out of me.

It's about two men who wake up inside a filthy, dilapidated bathroom and they're both chained to the wall at opposite ends. In the middle of the floor is a dead man holding a gun in one hand and a tape player in the other. They have to either saw their own feet off to get away, or one has to kill the other using the gun or else his wife and daughter will be murdered by the guy who put them there. There is a scene involving a darkroom and it's freaky. I think Suspiria is one of the greatest horror movies of all time. Everything about it is just perfection to me. The Goblin score, the bright Technicolor print, the tension, Jessica Harper, etc. I can hardly breathe when I watch it, especially during the opening. Scared the living daylights out of me when I was ten.
Saw is repulsive, but it's got a good story and a great cast. Props to Danny Glover. Though Cary Elwes was a bit too over-the-top at the end for my tastes.

You never played it? I would have to, at least once. :)
Yeah, i was totally wondering how Elwes looked now. I think I saw him few years ago, In something. I had imagined he puffed up, though  I don't know why I think the concept of him is funny, but i do. I don't want to hear him whining, though...

I've liked him since The Princess Bride and think it sucks that he didn't become a bigger star, actually. But such is life.
Check out Saw when it comes out next week, you might like it. But I hope you have a strong stomach!

I thought the scariest was the music on the "The Omen" - and, in general, Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastic (sp.?) - esp. since The Shining

Eh, The Omen did nothing for me except make sure I always use a condom to prevent little Damien's. :o
The music in Texas Chainsaw is pretty disturbing. That scratching of the piano string, sheesh.

Tell me about it. I so didn't expect any of that to happen. It took me a few minutes to comprehend it all.
But that scene with Shawnee Smith where she has her head in that clamp and has to get the key out of that guys stomach? Hoshit. I lost my popcorn.
YEA! And he was *ALIVE*...but you know...man if I was in that situation, I think I might do it! :sorry:  I mean I don't know if I would, but I'd hate to loose my head like that with the clamp and all!
And another thing that freaked me out was the way he had on the clown mask... VERY upsetting, scared me!
They are going to make a Saw 2.

I like him ok, but in a cheesy B movie way.
Yeah, I actually don't have a strong stomach, or brain, or whatever. So I might not pick that one up right away. Thanks for the recommend, though. Actually, when i rented Suspiria, I waited 5-6 days before i watched it, in anticipation of being really grossed out and scared. :p I was scared to watch it.

I dug The Grudge. It was incredibly lame and pretentious (they call it "non-linear storytelling" and I call it "showing-off"), but it had some truly chilling moments.
Have you seen the original Japanese version, "Ju-On?" Way scarrier, and you don't have to put up with Sarah Michelle Gellar for two hours.
Yeah, they flopped at the "non-linear" storytelling. Once the narrative is unravelled there's nothing there. That's not how it's supposed to work.

It's bloody horrifying. My head was between my knees for most of the movie but when the last ten minutes came, I just about passed out. The folks who made that know how to make brilliant horror because I was on the verge of collapsing and in need of smelling salts. So gory and gross, but so compelling and nailbiting.
I can't believe it got such horrible reviews. All the Austin Chronicle could say was that the director was tipping his hand too much with other horror film references and borrowings like from "Seven" etc...
That is not enough to tank a film in my opinion.
Now Cary Elwes's acting is another story... (holds nose) peeee-ewwwwww!

Yeah, Ju-On was a hundred times better. Some of the dialogue in The Grudge is horrifically awful and Gellar has one look plastered on her face throughout the whole thing. Some of the effects looked very fake, too, they should have worked on them some more.
But, on a better note, the first season of Murphy Brown and the second season of Punky Brewster come out tomorrow. I'm happier than a pig in shit.

I thought it was better than Seven, so they can bite my ass. Seven was dull and Brad Pitt's presence didn't help. I loathe him. o_O
I was fine with Elwes until the last twenty minutes. OMG, he was bloody awful. When he was on the phone listening to his wife and kid screaming? Oy. How whiny and annoying was he?

Jeezus, I was laughing out loud at that part!!  In fact, I remember laughing so hard that my husband nudged me in the ribs. Elwes was pure cheese at that moment. I really have to say though, I appreciated it because of the cheesiness. I'm weird like that.

Has anyone heard of a film called Undead? Probably not. It did well in Toronto.
Yeah, it reminded me of Peter Jackson's old movies. Truly gross and disgusting, but rather funny. Have you seen Lost Things? I know it's from Australia. I've been wanting to see that one for ages.

Hmm..the only Peter Jackson movie (pre-LOTR) I have heard of is Heavenly Creatures (one of my all-time favorite movies) - what else did he do - I'd be interested in checking them out :)

I hope you have a strong stomach because they are *nasty* flicks. Bad Taste, Meet the Feebles, and Dead Alive (Braindead). Dead Alive is my personal favorite because it's hilarious, but it's the nastiest one. Jackson has one sick mind.
Heavenly Creatures is awesome, too.

Yeah, it was just out here in the UK. Like Josh said, it's very early Peter Jackson, but that's no bad thing. It's out on video in April in Britain, I don't know if that's the same everywhere.
Best recent zombie movie though is without a doubt, Shaun Of The Dead. I tried to tell everyone about it a year ago, but no one took any notice :) A great British horror/comedy and one of my favourite films from last year.
Shaun of the Dead was funny, I dug it.
But my favorite recent zombie (and horror) movie was the Dawn of the Dead remake. That movie, to me, is the epitome of a good and fun popcorn flick. I love it. And you can't go wrong with Jake Weber, Sarah Polley, and Ving Rhames (three of my favorites!).

That's so cool you've seen it! I'm glad you liked it. It's a proper little British film that.
I thought it was great, really funny and really well-made.
I really liked the DOTD remake too, but I love the original so much it could never live up to it for me. The first 10 minutes of the remake though are just awesome.
Have you seen the unrated version?
"I sell televisions at Best Buy."
I love the original Dawn of the Dead (and, shock of all shocks, I actually like Day of the Dead, too  ), but the remake was so loosely based on it that I see it as a totally different movie. And I just adore the fact that 99% of the effects are real and not that CGI shit.
Romero is finally coming out with his Land of the Dead this year, I can't wait to see it. It has, I believe, John Leguizamo, Asia Argento, and Simon Baker in it.

As is Ving Rhames. That man is the definition of "presence," I love him in everything. Did you ever see that flick he was in called Holiday Heart? He played a drag queen who takes in a drug addict and her kid. He's great.
Dawn of the Dead had such a great cast, I was so surprised.
