View Full Version : Sanctuary masters

OK, this is kind of a long, involved question.
About two years ago, there was a great Stevie download site called moniquerenee.com. The site is now defunct. But while it was up, I downloaded a series of "Sanctuary" takes from the master reels. The takes were numbered up as far as 12 or 14, as I recall.
There was one take in particular that I loved. I think it was #10, or maybe #6.
Anyway, the laptop computer that they were on was stolen shortly after I downloaded the songs, and I've never been able to find the version I like so much since. I've reviewed everything that's reposted on ThrownDown.net, and it's not there.
Can anyone help me track down these takes? If it helps, they came from a series that also included conversations between Stevie and Tom Petty about the writing of the song, including one part where Tom says the chorus shouldn't start on the same chord as the verse.
I have them but I only have them listed as 1 thru 8. It's a riot listening to Stevie and Tom go back and forth about her only playing in the keys of F and G. He also goes on about how it needs a bridge and she tells him to biuld a bridge. At the end of nunber 8 she ask for a glass of champagne. Great stuff.

F is a very cool key to sing in - it is commonly referred to as the "show tune key"
G, on the other hand and IMO - is MUCH harder.
La Nicks though - has a strange voice that really could never sing in an easier key like C.
Here is some info on musical keys:

Thanks for the fasinating information. I played in the band in high school so I knew all that stuff at one time long long ago

Can Homegirl even try to sing in more than 2 keys anymore ? I mean, we are talking about about an octave and a half range on a good day.

If I recall correctly, I think Sable On Blonde is in some strange key like E flat or something. But other than that, I mean for crying out loud, it is all Am, F, G, repeat. Most things anyway. You get lucky to get a suspended second or a 7th in a bridge. If there IS a bridge, that is.
Thinking.....Bella Donna might be B flat, Leather and Lace too....

Well, I think she cam, but does not. I mean she was in close to three on the last tour. Say You Will was prob. the lowest and SG harmony was prob. the highest.
She was also WAY up there in the Chris Issak thingee.
But, I agree that she should stay as high as she can because, for me, the lower voice is not that great when compared to the high one.

I didn't hear THAT. She sure doesn't single an octave below middle C - and I don't know that those harmonies in SG are an octave above it.
And that's only a full two.

It sounds to me like when she sings "a little world in a world" in LIB - she is above middle C  She was also above it on the Chris Issak special.
I also thought that "Somethin in you brought out somethin in me" was below middle C - then in the chorus her voice seemingly is at middle C - her harmony above it.
But, in the end, I still think she can hit two and possibly three, which is not really that many IMO.

Stevie does not have a two octave full voice range. She never really did. If you count falsetto as a voice, then everyone has a two or three octave range.
The highest note she has ever recorded was an E below high C from "Sisters of the Moon". The highest note she has ever recorded that's not falsetto was an E flat below high C from "Wild Heart". The lowest note she has ever recorded is a B flat below middle C from "Everyday".
These days she very rarely ever goes higher than G above middle C. I was pleasantly surprised to see the she kicked it with a B flat above middle C on "Everybody Finds Out" and an A above middle C on "Smile at You" (I thought for sure she was gonna drop the key from the demo- but I'm glad I was wrong. Her singing on "Destiny Rules" was lower than anything on "Say You Will"- and I don't think those lowers notes (D below middle C) sound very good for Stevie.
La Nicks though - has a strange voice that really could never sing in an easier key like C.
She does occasionally- "Silver Springs" and "I Sing for the Things", for example.
It sounds to me like when she sings "a little world in a world" in LIB - she is above middle C  She was also above it on the Chris Issak special.
Not even close. I have the Chris Isaak thing on TiVo and she hits maybe a G or an A above middle C at the highest.

Funny thing is, I don't feel I'm defending Stevie, so much as I'm just pointing out what I feel to be the painfully obvious.
She's never had a "perfect" voice, nor an amazing range. And she's certainly lost a lot of whatever range she DID have.

I was counting the falsetto in the octave count. I mean she sings in it and it is a strong voice (just ask Chris Issak he said so a month or so ago)
I just remember seeing sheet music once (a long time ago) and it appeared that the songs were written so the vocal would be higher than middle C - and when I play (albeit VERY POORLY  ) SG on the piano, I have LB at middle C and the harmony one or sometimes, if I am feeling courageous  , two above that.
In any event, I like it better when she sings higher. The lower voice is that that great sounding to me. But, I love her anyway
Interestingly, on songs like Dreams, she sings four parts on the harmony (assuming she is in the lead somewhere in there, but it is hard to heare that - and she still laters that way those these days it is usually two rather than three or four voices

And Tower, thanks for posting that information about Stevie's record highs and lows. I never would have guessed her highest note was on SOTM... I would have guessed maybe Dreams ("it's only RIII-ight....")
Also, this brings up something I've been wondering for a while. In live performances at least since the early 1980s, Stevie hasn't even tried to hit the high note in the "Rhiannon" chorus ("Once in a MILLL-ion years..."). But it's not even that high, is it? I wonder if the difficulty comes more from poor vocal technique...

Fandom. I love that word. Says so much with six tiny letters. It's a word that keeps on giving.
Seemed an appropriate word to use among contemporaries who while away their days posting on a fan site.
Doesn't seem to require any stretch of the imagination whatsoever, to realize that those who are not in possession of a certain level of fanaticism wouldn't care to be bothered hanging 'round these parts.
So I see no reason to deny it, since none of us can claim, with even the tiniest ounce of believability, that we're not guilty of having our own "fandom." :wavey:

I made one comment that was meant to get a laugh... it wasn't meant to be anything more. Later, Diss and The Tower discussed (lightheartedly) my apparent status as the "Super Defender of Stevie Nicks," so I just thought I'd explain my line of thinking. I count her falsetto in that - I think it needs to be counted because it really is not a falsetto in that she can sing lead in it  She doesn't and chooses instead to sing harmony - but it still is more powerful than your run of the mill falsetto.
