Some of you might already know this, but it's news to me cuz I just bought the book. I have some questions at the end...
This is an excerpt from "Hendrix: Setting the Record Straight" by McDermott and Kramer, 1992:
"The following day, the group traveled up the Calif. coast to perform at the Santa Clara Rock Festival. One of the better-organized festivals of 1969, Hendrix and the Experience coasted through their seventy-minute performance, sending, as the San Jose Mercury described, "nearly 20,000 of the king of rock's subjects into stunned delicious rapture." One memorable highlight of the Santa Clara appearance took place before "Foxey Lady" began. Hendrix had often introduced the song with a sly quip, usually dedicating the number to "somebody's girlfriend... we'll find out after the show" or, wile pointing to an unknown female fan, to "that girl over there in the yellow underwear." On this day, a gust of wind had lifted the skirt of a pretty folk singer who had completed her set earlier and was now watching Hendrix from the wings of the stage. The opportunity was too good to let pass and Hendrix wryly dedicated "Foxey Lady" to "the girl back there with the yellow underwear." "Yea you" confirmed Hendrix, pointing out a young Stevie Nicks red with embarrassment.
This bit of information was related to the authors by STevie. She is acknowledged in the "thank you" part of the book where all the people who contributed memories are listed. It says she related this story as she was packing to go with Fleetwood Mac on a tour to Australia. Since the authors stated the book took several years to compile and it was published in 1992, obviously the statement was made either during the coke or klonopin years. So, I'm not saying it isn't true, just wondering, would she relate that story today? She seems kinda conservative in comparison to the dark years.
Also, I think this must be the show STevie referred to in the Courtney Love Spin magazine interview:
CL: He was playing "California Dreaming"? Oh my God!!
SN: And so I just threw in my Michelle Phillips harmony and..he was so beautiful. And then I didn’t really see him again until two years later, when he called me and asked me if I wanted to be in his rock’n’roll band, which I didn’t even know existed. And within two or three months we were opening for Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, all the San Francisco bands. Two years later, we packed up and moved to Los Angeles with about 12 demos.
We are talking about Fritz here, right? Does anyone know which festival they opened for Janis? Did they open for Jimi and/or Janis on more than one show? I'm gonna see if I can find any boots of those shows.
Hhmmm... suddenly I'm wanting to hear more of those Fritz MP3s. :D
Thanks!
Laura
