There are plenty of rather obvious ones, like

Janet Leigh in Psycho

But I pick the following:

The shooting of the boy in Once Upon a Time in the West
Evelyn Mulwray's unexpected demise in Chinatown

The one i remember most, when i was young, is a Dirty Harry movie, where in the end there was a trackdown scene at an amusement park...and the bad guy fell from the top of a rollercoaster (or something) right onto a Unicorn's horn through his gut. I'm sure it's not the worst, but it really stuck with me. Oh, and when that beam falls into the gym teacher's gut in Carrie...

really ended in a death, Even though the scene in the movie was tame:

Brandon Lee in the Crow

Though I do recall the way the girl in the movie "the Hitchhiker" died as gruesome (But original):

Tied hands to the back of a tractor trailer and her legs tied to the semi truck...Add one truck in gear, And Snap!!!, No more girl. Man, That is one messed up (But original) way to off someone.

the shooting of brandon teena in "boys don't cry" ( i am from omaha which isn't far from where all this happened , so it is real brutal 2 me~
the shooting of the little girl standing by the ice cream truck in "assault on precinct 13"
the end of "the house of sand & fog"
the death scene in "the life of david gale"
some of the deaths in those "final destination" movies r pretty freaky deaky also~

blessed be~

Favorite.movie.ever. (ok, not favorite, but i love it) Also, now i have to add the beautifully shot death scene from Bound, where the blood just makes a pool...I guess that's more of a pretty death scene, though... :)

For me it's Mufasa from The Linon King :( And another shocking death fro me was Randy in Scream 2.

The worst for me: the scene in Scarface where Al Pacino's brother gets his face chainsawed off.

You don't actually see it, but it gets close enough that I've never been able to watch that movie since. Whenever I see it on TV, I have to change the channel quickly, because I'm afraid that scene is next.

For me it's Mufasa from The Linon King :( I remember crying in the movie theater. I think it's the most devastating moment in a Disney movie.

(And I don't want to hear anyone laughing at me for placing that much importance on a Disney movie).

The most devastating Disney moment for me is the scene where Dumbo finally gets to see his mother one last time and swings on her trunk. Sure, he gets to see her again, but she'll spend the rest of her life in that little train car for simply trying to protect him.

The one that stuck with me was the first scene of Cliffhanger  Stallone's veins are popping out and after building the suspense the woman just drops (following her teddy bear) right into the canyon. I expected Sylvester to be all heroic and pull her up before she fell, but nooo. That was one of my first death scenes as a little kid.

Just some:

Ivan in Childhood of Ivan by Tarkovsky: the most shocking and heartbreaking for me, a movie on the side of the war victims

Roberto Benigni in La vita รจ bella: A last joke to keep his child dreaming.

Olga in Slave Of Love by Michalkov: She's the only passenger on a trolley car followed by the White Army. As the trolley slows down, she turns towards the soldiers who are closer and closer end very quietly tell them how dishonorable they are...

Thelma and Louise in Thelma & Louise by Ridley Scott: even if they probably bounced, right?

John Merrick in The Elephant Man by David Lynch: he wants to sleep for once like all the others.

Judge Doom in Who Framed Roger Rabbit? by Robert Zemeckis :D

The hands-down most shocking death scene(s) is in "Dogville" at the very end. Nicole Kidman kills everyone in the town of Dogville, even the baby, but lets the dog live. I was absolutely stunned when I saw it in the theaters.

More shocking deaths:

-Christian Slater in Heathers. Who expected that?!
-The opening sequence of Dario Argento's Suspiria. Horrifying.
-Sean Penn in Dead Man Walking. Everyone knew it was coming, but it was so cold and surreal.
-House of Sand and Fog. Blew my mind.

Thelma and Louise in Thelma & Louise by Ridley Scott: even if they probably bounced, right?

Have you seen the alternate ending? It literally shows them crash down into the canyon. Very chilling.

 Noooo... another DVD to get.

House of Sand and Fog. Blew my mind.

Great movie! It made me realize for the first time that Jennifer Connelly can act. The ending was so sad.

Jamie Lee Curtis in Halloween Ressurrection

One of my favorites. For some reason i dont think she is dead. if her brother has these powers to keep coming back from the dead, why cant she?

Twilight Zone The Movie.

This part never made it to the big screen. Vic Morrow and the two kids who were decapitated by the helicopter hovering above them on the movie set. Terrible, horrible tragedy.

I agree, although she doesn't die so I don't know if it counts. That scene where they can't be together gets to me. At least in the end it turns out okay.

At the end of The Good Son, I have to say, even tho I was cheering her on, when the mom let go of Mac Culkin....I was a lil shocked.

In the Sixth Sense, finding out about the little girl's death was kinda shocking too.

Joe Pesci in Casino was an interesting and rather disturbing demise.

The dude in A Nightmare On Elm Street that got turned into mushy liquid on his ceiling is one I remember.

Also I remember Andy Garcia getting decapitated in Black Rain by a rather sharp katana... Ouch! :distress:

Not so much shocking as it was abrupt and sad, but Michael's death in the new "Dawn of the Dead" stands out. Can you imagine having to kill yourself after all that? Great flick, too, and much better than the original. Hats off to those who made it.

 Sorry!

Go rent Dawn of the Dead, though. I saw it in the theaters and was stunned at how fabulous it was. I don't usually like modern horror movies, but I love Sarah Polley, Ving Rhames, and Jake Weber (best actor in it), so I knew it had to be watchable. And it certainly was. Blew my mind! See the unrated version, though, it develops the characters much better.

One of the more disturbing death scenes I recall is in Saving Private Ryan when the US solider is getting that knife slowly stuck into his chest, all the while the German solider is telling him "Shhhhh!"

Also, Jesus' death in the Passion.
