View Full Version : What did Stevie say???
Yesterday morning on VH1 Classic they showed a short snippet with Stevie talking about her backing vocals on Tom Petty's Don't come Around Here No More. I missed most of the segment and I'm trying to find out all that she said. I heard her say something about being jealous of Tom's lyrics I Can't Feel You Anymore as if she felt like she should've thought of them herself. Did anyone hear the whole thing??

Well, if it's the same snippet from the Greatest Videos countdown, Stevie was talking about how that song was supposed to be hers. Tom said that when he played it for Dave Stewart, that Dave had envisioned the video - including himself being the caterpillar, smoking the hooka pipe on top of the mushroom. Tom had let Dave Stewart record a vocal demo, and when Stevie found out that Dave had already worked on it, she had a temper tantrum and said, "Fine, I don't want the song anymore" and gave it back to Tom. She ended up singing background vocals on it. :wavey:

But that made her stronger. It made her hold on to her, you know? :sorry:

Hmnn, my uncle, who has no reason to lie or make up stories but who could be misinformed (I wonder where he heard it?) said that he heard, FACT, that that Tom Petty song was about Stevie. Guess not. But a tantrum? hmmm...I love Diva tantrums. Without them our favorite female stars are just like our "nice" friends who are more attractive than we are.... :p

I don't know if Stevie recorded backing vocals for DCAHNM at some point, she may have, but even if she did, she isn't on the actual record. For sure.
oooo...the plot thickens...

Here are the lyrics - Hmmmmmmmm - ya think TP had a bad of weed and La Nicks was rifling through his stuff for it
Don't come around here no more
Don't come around here no more
Whatever you're lookin for
Hey don't come around here no more
I've given up stop
I've given up stop
I've given up stop
On waiting any longer
I've given up on
This love getting stronger
I've given up stop
I've given up stop
I've given up stop
You tangle my emotions
I've given up honey
Please admit it's over
Don't come around here no more
Don't come Don't come around here no more
Don't come around here no more
Don't come around here no more
Don't come around here no more
I don't feel you anymore
You darken my door
Whatever you're lookin for
Hey don't come around here no more
around here no more
Don't come around here no more
Don't come around here no more
Stop walking down my street
don't come around here no more
Who do you expect to meet
Don't come around here no more
And whatever you're lookin for
Hey don't come around here no more, hey
Honey please don't come around here no more
Whatever you're lookin for

Hmm. Give me a minute, and I'll type up some of the info on DCAHNM I have :).
Southern Accents Credits-
TP- Vocals and Piano
Mike Campbell- Guitar
Benmont Tench- Keyboards
Stan Lynch- Drums and Percussion
Howie Epstein- Bass and Vocals
David A. Stewart- Sitar, Keyboards, Vocals
Dean Garcia- Intro Bass
Daniel Rothmuller- Cello
Stephanie Spruill, Sharon Celani, Marilyn Martin- Background Vocals
Mike Campbell's comments from their Playback boxed set-
"That was while we were doing Southern Accents," Mike says. "During the Dark Period. Dave Stewart came along and he had this track he had originally offered to Stevie Nicks. I guess she balked at doing it. Tom heard it and said 'Well, I'll do it. Maybe just to piss her off.' One thing led to another. Near the end of the recording process we said, this really isn't lifting up, we should have the band double time the tempo. It really took off. The band worked only internally for so long that we were getting stale, and Dave injected a new excitement into it."
Stevie also goes uncredited in the Playback liner notes.
Whew.

So, anyway, I always presumed she didn't actually sing on it on the end. I have to go back and listen to it, but she's certainly not loud in the mix if she is.I think it's just one of those mysteries. In 1985, all of us Stevie fans used to say that it sounds like her, but that might have been because when you're a Stevie fan & you hear Sharon, it's all over. You're gone.
I knew Sharon was on the record, as she sings most of the backing vocals on Southern Accents, plus she toured with Tom as a backing singer on the subsequent tour (you can see her singing on the tour video). How many dates did she do on that tour? A bunch of us Stevie fans went to the Forum show in the hopes that Stevie would show up (that's the sort of buzz that Don't Come Around Here No More created among us), but she didn't.

I know I shouldn't doubt you Johnny, but hey I can't help it! :)
Well, I'm not always right! But, shhhh! ;)
My understanding of it, was that Dave Stewart wrote the song with Tom with the intention of having Stevie sing the line "Don't come around here no more". But Stevie arrived in the studio, and Tom had already recorded that part, causing Stevie to have a little temper tantrum, which I'm sure she said caused her to "lose all my rights to the song". I believe Dave had envisioned Stevie playing the part of Alice in the video too.
So, anyway, I always presumed she didn't actually sing on it on the end. I have to go back and listen to it, but she's certainly not loud in the mix if she is.
Is that not right? Please correct me if I'm wrong :)
I knew Sharon was on the record, as she sings most of the backing vocals on Southern Accents, plus she toured with Tom as a backing singer on the subsequent tour (you can see her singing on the tour video).
Plus if she did sing on it why isn't she credited? Why not even on the boxset?
Actually, the song was written for Stevie, and to the best of my knowledge, she did record some vocals for it, prior to finding out that Tom had also recorded lead vocals for it.
I've read that she then said something to the effect of, "well, why should I bother working on it now, when he's already done it?" And refused to work any further on it.
I'm pretty sure in the VH1 interview Darlene was asking about, Stevie said that she is there in the mix of the final version.
Also, on the Nicksfix, Sharon lists "Don't Come Around Here No More" as one of the "other recordings (she's) done with Stevie." A list that includes "You Can Still Change Your Mind," Louise Goffin's cover of "If You Ever Did Believe," B.B. King's "Can't Get Enough," and other guest appearances.
As for why she's not credited... that's a good question.
Perhaps she's chosen not to be, much as Prince chooses not to be credited for playing on, and co-writing the music to, "Stand Back."
Thanks everyone for this cool info. I didn't know any of this, but that has always been a favorite Tom song of mine. I did not know/think Stevie was on it. If she is, it must be very much in the background. ??? I too used to wonder if the song was written by Tom *about* Stevie because I had heard Stevie in an interview say something about her being a Heartbreaker whether they wanted her or not...or just adoring Tom so much she'd be around him whether he liked it or not...can;t remember how she worded it. I'msure she was joking. But then I saw a clip of Tom and he made a comment about Stevie being one of those people that is going to be around you ~ whether you like it or not. So for a while, back in the mid 80's, I did wonder if she bugged him. And then of course, RAL came out, and there was no Stevie and Tom duet on it, like her first two records. I had been enjoying the pattern! But I am happy to hear the song was not written about Stevie, but originally for Stevie, and not even by Tom at all. Phew! (heh!) Then I eventually started hearing rumours about Stevie and Tom having a thing (or should I say fling) and Tom's marriage breaking up over it. Which was odd, because it seemed like I had heard a few times how Stevie became friends with Tom's wife. So I have no idea what is true, and what is rumour.
Hey, speaking of this all - does anyone know of any Tom songs that supposedly *are* about Stevie. Or any of hers (besides That Made Me Stronger) that are about Tom? Or any Eagles or Don Henley (or anyone else for that matter) that wrote songs about Stevie?
I thought I read on the liner notes of the Gene Simmons (of the band KISS), I thought on his solo album (like in the late 70's) that in his thank you's he mentioned Stevie's name. ANyone know about that connection?!
Thank all of you for the input. On this clip I saw Sunday morning Stevie says she did sing in it. I wish I could have made in the other room in time to hear all of it. I think the clip was taken from Tom's Behind the Music. I've searched the internet looking for a transcript of it but to no avail. Stevie mentioned being jealous of the lyrics and that she walked out on the session.I have always heard her voice on that song so I have no doubt that she's on it. I.m still searching to find her excact words. Maybe they will show it again. It was on All Star Jams right before they played the video and it aired in the last 15 minutes before the programing changed to what thet call The Alternative.

To try and answer part of TC's question...I have always *thought* that it was possible that "Insider" was written by Tom about Stevie and Lindsey. I have never heard him say that and it could be about something completely different but I interpret the song to be written from Tom's perspective of SnL's relationship. Stevie is the Dark Angel, Lindsey's masterpiece, his quiet world of white and gold. He might have written Insider after watching them both struggle after their initial breakup, especially Lindsey trying to cope with Stevie moving on and finding other men to work on her music. (hence the masterpiece line) Like I said, this is only just a guess on my part but I do love the song. Its one of my favorites and I think STevie's harmonies on this one are perfection. She sounds so stunning and I love the lyrics as well.
I am pretty sure I have read elsewhere about the possiblity of Don and/or the Eagles, writing about Stevie but I will leave that to someone else to talk about since I am not sure. I remember something about Life in the Fastline but there was some debate about what that was really about.

Others can elaborate, but I refer to Jimmy, Waddy, Mick, Joe. (Others will tell you that she & Waddy were just friends, but I don't think so.)

oh, yeah! I don't know what joe looks like, but the others had to have great personalities....Lindsey is exceptionally handsome, though, and Don's not bad. Looks like you might have a chance, though! :wavey:
